  • It's a B-E-A-utiful copperhead in the woods! ~ Let's learn some facts about the copperhead snake. I'll compare the venomous eastern copperhead snake (Agkistrodon contortrix) to the nonvenomous northern watersnake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon) so you can see the differences. Are copperheads dangerous? Yes. Will you die from a bite? Most likely no...but your day will suck.
Check out the VHS ► www.virginiahe... ! They have a great website that compares to eastern copperhead to many other snake species! Consider becoming a member if you also enjoy the herps of Virginia.

    Birthing - www.livescienc...
*The birthing times vary across regions and even during certain years. Generally it will be in August, September and October.
*Technically the northern watersnake is venomous, but it is a very weak venom and not injected via a front-fang system. I don't mind addressing the snake as nonvenomous in this video as it doesn't create a hysteria that may cause needless deaths/removals of watersnakes from landowners.

I was bitten by a copper snake 2 1/2 weeks ago, Athens GA. The pain is excruciating and not even morphine touches it. The site of the bite is still swollen, tender and warm. The inflammation takes weeks to go away and you need to be with your foot elevated for 2 to 4 weeks to prevent permanent damage to your lymph glands, veins and special valves that pump the blood up. I was in an urban area, in the asphalt drive way and wearing sandals. We humans have been taking over their habitat, so watch out even if you are in the city.

I can't wait 'til my next copperhead! *Note I added a card in the video. But when I said there are "only three snakes in Virginia that are venomous," I meant "only three snakes that are venomous & a danger to humans." Technically the northern watersnake is venomous, but it is a very weak venom and not injected via a front-fang system.

@@cfitz11 Indeed, good to point that out. Rear-fanged and with venom. I believe there have even been some reports of somewhat severe reactions from their bites.

SO gorgeous! Amazing that you got the little guy to stay put on its fern nest. Was the temperature on the cooler side? At first I was thinking that it was like our juvenile squirrel, who is too naive to take proper precautions. But then I was thinking that perhaps snakes aren’t as smart as squirrels and run more on instinct than learned behavior. This is how I got wondering about the temperature. Fabulous video!!

It wasn't too warm a day but it wasn't that cold either. Maybe mid-seventies. Coming to think of it, now that you mentioned the temperature, the snake wasn't basking on the southwest facing side of the fern - so it wasn't an optimal spot to grab some sunlight. It has me curious as well!

Cool video. I learned some things and it was fun to watch. It is crazy how much stuff we can find if we slow down and take a look around.
