    I've always been of the opinion, at least for the major console manufacturers like Nintendo and Sony, that they should have a made-to-order section on their website where you could pay for them to print out and send a copy of one of their retro games, be it from the NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, etc. I get why games eventually go out of print and why they don't mass produce older titles, but I feel like having a made-to-order model for their legacy library couldn't be anything other than lucrative for them.

    • @dogemonuniverse
      @dogemonuniverse Місяць тому +10

      If they do this, that would indeed be lucrative... until you realize people would only use this to buy old retro games, then rip them for emulation purposes. Of course, they could keep it off the more modern consoles (Post-N64 would probably be the cutoff point to prevent piracy, but honestly, at this point, they’re going to make bad press if they don’t allow the later gens (if they let you buy these at all)

    • @Yu__Narukami
      @Yu__Narukami Місяць тому +71

      @@dogemonuniverse People emulate these games already and I don't think producing more copies for people who want them would make piracy run any more rampant. I can agree though that since Nintendo specifically cares more about emulation than they already should, that they would probably see that risk from this angle and could very well be a deterrent. Still though, realistically I think they'd only benefit from this idea if they actually did it.

      The only "downside" I see for this would be... Either the prices of all collections would do a big nosedive (which collectors would hate)... or the other way around, with "the original version" becoming even more expensive, because its "the only real retro one" for collectors.
      Either way, it would be a great way to get some games. Sadly it will never cover that many games as those companies cant reprint games from now-defunct companies and expired licenses.
      Oh, and that service would probably be only available in some countries. Just like Square Enix. They sold (maybe even still sell?) some older PS1 games in the US. But Europe cant buy a single one of them.

    • @gargonovich
      @gargonovich Місяць тому +15

      It would be pretty expensive to do it this way, and you'd still run into rights issues for a lot of games that were co-developed or have licensed assets like music or IP. In Nintendo's case, Given that the Switch has sold near enough the same as the NES, SNES, and N64 combined, digital distribution via that machine is way cheaper and reaches a lot more people. Those machines also all have flash cart solutions, so those who want to play on real hardware have ways whether carts and discs are re-issued or not.

    I'll tell you this right now, if Nintendo released the original SNES but just with added HDMI output like the SNES Classic Mini and also re-released a whole bunch of original physical SNES games again, maybe with added FastROM to all the games that once used SlowROM and some extra QoL tweaks and features where it made sense too, I would buy those in a heartbeat. And, if they were smart, they'd just make the cartridge slot universal this time around too, so whichever model you buy you can use the carts from any other region too.
    In a heartbeat I tell you.
    And, because of the original 60 million NES and 49.1 million SNES sales, plus the 3.6 million NES Classic Mini and 5.28 million SNES Classic Mini sales in modern times too, I think those retro systems make more sense than any other retro systems to do this for in modern times.

Limited run prepares a project then puts up a pre-order for a month or so, then produces an amount of the item proportional to the orders. This could open the door for Nintendo to release SNES games with updated audio and video based on the MSU1 projects since storage on cartridge based media is so much larger. We could have an offical Zelda: LttP orcestral release with video cut scenes that is playable on the SNES for example, they could even release the same game on Switch as well.

With ability when a older game cartridge is inserted it unlocks rewards or bonus content on Switch two games of the same franchise. I would love to have a N64 TV dock that you could insert N64 carts on top with what looks like a DD64 on the bottom where the Switch and Switch 2 dock. Also as a classic retro console that is SuperNES and Gamecube console hybrid that looks similar to Nintendo Playstation prototype console.

    I think this would be a really lucrative avenue for GameStop to explore with them along with some other smaller retro game shops and stuff. Their entire business seems to be shrinking and shrinking atm and to future proof it a bit, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a joint venture where only they sell these legit copies of older stuff or something but they pay for a bit of it on their end idk just spitballing.

    We should have gone back to cartridges in some form or another years ago. For gaming purposes, optical disc was obsolete after 360 and PS3 era. Despite the storage capacity advantage, they just don't have the read speeds to keep up. It's the whole reason we still have to install games despite having the disc. Which may have been on purpose. This allowed companies to put nothing but a download key on a disc and make a physical purchase be essentially meaningless and pushing us more into all digital.

    The Neo Geo AES / MVS is the best example for using the cartridge to expand the capabilities of the system. Their carts had a lot more hardware in them and were more expensive but the platform lasted over 15 years. It only became obsolete because of high definition. It is theoretically possible to put a raspberry pi inside a cart and program up a game that has multiplayer over the wireless connection. You could even make carts with RJ45 ports to go wired. Being able to advance the technology in the game itself without upgrading the whole system is one of the BIG differences between cartridge and optical disc systems. Discs are MUCH cheaper to make but can only hold code.
    I think the real question is: Are there enough of any old console to warrant this kind of time investment to get development done? Secondarily, would a company who makes their own aftermarket consoles want to do it or would they rather just make their own system from scratch? Is there even enough public interest to make something like this? I think it's technically possible but making the product appealing to enough of the market is the hard part.

    It'd be absolutely amazing if Nintendo would get on board with the retro gaming market. I think there is a much larger market for this then Nintendo realizes. Just imagine if they were to make new versions of the NES, SNES, and N64 consoles, but with a couple enhancements for modern times. Imagine 4k resolution (or at least 1080p), NES now able to output stereo and cartridges no longer needing to be pressed down, N64 with expansion pak built into the console, and new wireless versions of the controllers for each console. The new N64 controllers would be modernized, now looking very similar to the Retro Fighters controllers and having built-in rumble. The new NES controllers would be available in original or dog bone style. Lastly, Nintendo would make brand new games for those consoles which would play on the new versions of the consoles as well as the original ones.

    Isn't that hard to reverse engineer a 30 year old chip, making a new ASIC out of it neither.

The real big thing about this is the development of a more powerful superfx compatible chip, that could potentially be used in fan games and rom hacks and the possibility of reverse engineering it, to be used in modern emulation.
