    Awesome rocky section of trail. Might be slow going but certainly adds to the adventure! Carrying water is not fun. Early on in my backpacking days before I had a filter I carried 10 liters on a 30 mile trip once. Stupid me. It was a work out! Too bad you were not feeling well. I've had that happen on trail before but it was always from high altitude coupled with low Calories. You were only about 1800' though. Hmmm. You still had a good first day though. Well done. Have a great day.

      It was interesting getting over those rocks. lol. Last year when I went through that spot I ended up falling right in my face. I was lucky. I did the same thing with the water. I would carry 10-11 liters too. lol. Never realized I could filter water as I went. I still remember a thru hiker walking up to the creek and filling up. I asked about how he carries all the water he needs and he said he doesn’t and just filters. That next day I ordered a filter. lol. Even with getting sick it was still a fun time.

    That’s a long hike with water. 17 miles is pretty tough with a dry camp too. Very impressive my friend. Humidity might have gotten you sick. Great job on the mileage and carrying water. Cool video 👍🏻👍🏻

      Thanks! That’s one of the issues with the water carries because it isn’t just carrying water for hiking but most camp spots are dry so you have to carry water for hiking, camping that night and morning, and enough to get you to the next water source hours down the trail. But other than the water carries and the tons of rocks it is a beautiful trail.

    Dang, you guys had a hard and long 1st day for sure! I look forward to following this trip! The lack of water sources and camp areas really make this a challenging Hike!

      Tough day for sure. All up hill. Getting sick didn’t make it better either. lol. The logistics of this trail are what make it the most difficult. You really have to plan on this one.

    You had a better first day than I did 3 days later. I knew of the water source just after fence crossing on private land so I waited to camel up there. I hiked down to try to find that campsite, couldn’t find it so I hiked up to power lines to try to find a stealth camp. That was a no go so I dropped back down and did find it. All of this in the rain.

      I wasn’t sure about the water situation after that last source but I don’t want to take the chance. We had a little trouble finding that camp site. We had to use FarOut to hone in on exactly where to go. We past it once and had to turn back. The second day for us wasn’t so great. lol.

    That is a rough first day! Sounds like it was food or water related since you weren't dehydrated. Maybe the humidity also factored in on all that uphill. Those are some insane water carries. Similar to out here in Joshua Tree with no water at all. Caching is a decent option if you can figure it out. Looking forward to part 2! Hope you felt better that night.

      Totally rough day. Not sure if it was food or water related. Dakota ended up getting sick too (episode 2) and we had different food and as far as the water we have different filters that are different brands. Unless there was some kind of chemicals in it. Not sure. This is the only trail in PA that I know of where you have loooooong water carries. We talked about caching but it seems like such a hassle and when we did this trail last year we were fine.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 wow! 😲 yeah if there are that many differences it sounds like something in the water that wasn't filtered out.

    Great video, I’ve been looking into doing a through hike on the Standing Stone this video was definitely a wake up call not realizing there was such distance between camping areas, that water carry was pretty gnarly. Did you prefer going north or south?

      Thanks! You have to do a good bit of planning for this trail. Mainly for the camp sites (distance between) and water sources. This trail is in the app FarOut end it shows the camping and no camping zones the best which makes it a little easier to plan. The map that you buy from the SST association is good too but the app is easier to read at a glance. No mater which direction you go you will have three days (of a 5 day trip) which require longer water carries. Last year I did it southbound and I think it was easier.

    Damn that sucks you got sick. My guess is McDonald's 😅 Looked rough with the water carry.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  5 місяців тому +2

      lol. I was thinking about the McDonald’s food. But then later that night, Dakota got sick and we didn’t eat the same food. The water carries are long on this trail and if you are doing it over 5 days, 3 days if it are long water carries.
