This is the best wrestling channel ever, hands down. The combination (of domination) lol anyway.. the combo of still shots, short clips, story telling, and witty comments are top knotch 👌
Though the seeds of the 'Attitude Era' were already being planted prior to Survivor Series 1997, this was truly, in my opinion, the unofficial beginning of the 'Attitude Era' of the late 90s and early 2000s.
Thank you Davey for entertaining us with your skills in the ring. Even though you had demons with Chinlocks, you overcame them. As for His Excellency, you are still one of my favorites on Reliving The War, hope to see you soon in WCW.
Great episode. This was the end of my regular professional wrestling watching when I was younger. I was getting a little bit older and had other interests and Bret Hart was my favorite and I was never a WCW guy. And this kind of tipped me into casual fan which led to not really watching anything wrestling related until quarantine. Funny, now reliving the war is my favorite show of the week.
I'm honestly not sure if I am emotionally ready for this episode and having heard the first, oh three seconds, of intro I have confirmed that yes, I'm gonna rage all over again!!!😭😭😭 Man, Ryan is a magician, mastercraft!
Another great video as always. Truly, the end of an Era in WWF. I didn't start watching wrestling until I was 6 or 7 in 1999, so I missed out on a ton of context with how things got to where they were then. So I truly appreciate this channel and Reliving the War for highlighting everything everything smarting up us fans who may have missed some or all of the Monday Night Wars.
@@Black-Circle man that is a good question. I think the Attitude Era began with Summerslam 97 as that set up both a major part of Austin's back story in the lead up to him becoming Champ and also shifted stuff with Bret and HBK.
I've been waiting on this one since the beginning of "reliving the war.." As always, you knocked this one out of the park by providing context and your personal reactions at the time.
Great job on the video! This is such a pivotal moment in wrestling history and I wanted to see the build-up too and the aftermath of this event on releving the war. Thank you
This show, the ‘97 Survivor Series, is one of the most important turning points in the war. This was the birth of the Mr. McMahon character, and he was the spark that lit the fuse on the explosion that was Steve Austin. Once Austin vs. McMahon took off, there was no stopping the WWF. Raw became must-see television and there was nothing WCW could do to keep up.
i still have my vhs copy to this very day, i never knew how more significant this ppv was, the 1st appearance of the dx music video & the group's name, the wwf attitude logo. bret really was the catalyst for things shifting even further in wrestling at this point and its sad that he's still coping with this tragic event. thank you for covering this ppv.
I wasn't a Bret fan, I did know all about him leaving for WCW and I was 18 years old at the time. I thought it was a shitty thing then, and still think it was a shitty thing to do now. I understand Bret had all of the leverage and Vince felt like his hand was forced but I believe there had to be a better way than what we got.
I was 13 when this happened and at the time, I was fully engaged in the Monday night war. Bret Hart to this day is my second favorite wrestler and I just remember being confused and upset by that ending. I didn’t know anything about him going to WCW or really much of the behind the scenes problems between Bret and Shawn to the degree I now know. Just reliving this brings back all those memories of hating Shawn Michaels, really hating Vince McMahon and being crestfallen watching Bret Hart try to overcome the nonsense of WCW.
WCW had no clue how to book Bret Hart. They turned him to many times Bret is involved in recreating Montreal Screw Job not one but twice. Bret vs Hogan should have been money match but nope politics got in the way
I was tearing up when you were describing what it was like watching the main event as a kid, not having any idea what was going to happen. Also, the way you described what Bret and Shawn were to wrestling at that time, just on point. It's as if I grew up watching wrestling with you. Thanks bro.
I remember feeling the same way...WTF happened? And I was a Bret fan too. Gotta say, you have insane amounts of respect from me for tackling such a massive undertaking with the Monday Night Wars series. Outstanding work.
I'll be honest, memes aside, it's kinda sad getting to points like this where you know guys we've been watching since the start are now going elsewhere or leaving and disappearing.
Many years earlier though Shawn and Marty got screwed in favor of Bret and Anvil. But they act like adults' while Bret throws a giant temper tantrum when he gets screwed in favor of Shawn .
In a way, this is also the end of Bret Hart. I think this and a lot of decisions made during his WCW run killed his love of wrestling and I think he got it back a bit, but I think Bret was never the same Jam Up Guy that he was. Man is going to go from feuding with HBK and Austin to Will Sasso from MadTv. Can't wait until you begin 1998!
The way WCW brought Bret in was terrible. Special guest referee! Typical WCW, they manage to get something amazing. But turns around and screws it up 🤦♂️
@@firewalker1372 They had the hottest guy in wrestling and basically made him Hogan's lackey for damn near a year with his satellite status in the nWo. They fumbled the bag hard. Imagine a main event level Bret in 98 with guys like DDP and Rey Mysterio.
Thanks for this video. Bret Hart was my childhood hero. I stayed up until 4am on a Sunday night for the main event of this show. I remember being very confused by the finish. They show a shot of Bret's face seconds after the bell and it's clear something is up. I hoped he'd be on Raw that Friday (In the UK). But he was gone.
When you said were discus the while match I was expecting more. People talk about how Vince's mere presence ringside should have been s sign something was up, but that's because they've forgotten that the start of the match provides a Kayfabe explanation for them coming out.
So thankful for you and all your work! There's a lot of the Monday Night War I missed early on, so this series has been a highlight of my week for quite a while now. Cheers!
I was 17 when this PPV happened, and I only had an inkling of what was going to happen. At the time my favorite match was the LOD crew vs the Nation (Ken Shamrock was one of my favorite good guy wrestlers at the time)
Every now and then I would search for long videos that are a tribute to my favorite wrestlers of the Attitude Era, NWO, DX and the Smackdown Six. Kane is my favorite one to watch when I come across it the tribute video has to be KANE the embodiment of the character like it's not mythic. I really can't put it to words of what I mean.
This moment at Survivor Series would truly be the end of an era in WWE, shortly after this the company would enter the most successful era in history, sadly at the expense of The Best there is, The Best there was, and The Best there ever will be. A True Jam Up Guy indeed 😔
I watched this video out-of-the-blue shortly after it came out, and this episode is what convinced me to watch the whole series, it took over two months but now I have made it all the way to Montreal. Across over 106 episodes, I saw the puzzle pieces get put into place, Bret vs Shawn, Davey Boy Smith Chinlocks, Rocky Maivia heat, and the meteoric rise of Steve Austin. Watching this video a second time, the intro gave me chills, and a whole world of inside jokes and anecdotes became clear as day, and the ramifications of what happened at the PPV have become all the more real. Cheers, and thanks for taking all of us on this insane journey.
I remember watching this on TV as a 14 year old. The end of the main event still sticks in my mind. It was so surreal. I thought to myself, "well, wrestling just got real" and I never saw it the same way again. My childhood as a wrestling fan died but my young teenage to young adult years as a wrestling fan started and I lived through the greatest era of all time, the Attitude Era.
the Montreal screwjob is so infamous that I never really thought about the rest of the ppv.. kinda wish it didn't happen.. Bret's renaming years of his career was absolutely wasted in WCW
I've been wanting to see this particular Survivor Series for years. One giveaway as to the fact that the Screwjob wasn't a work was that this Survivor Series was NOT released on hard copy when the prerequisite Survivor Series events were released on the WWE DVD box set.
I was always a Michaels fan but I remember watching the Match and when the bell rung I was totally confused and thinking something is not right? It's a shame Bret left that way only to be treated even worse in WCW.
I remember watching this live on PPV. I too did not know Bret was leaving WWF. My hero was leaving and it felt so empty afterwards on RAW. Friends at school saying Bret is going to WCW. Then the nWo comes out the next night wearing Canadian flags singing the national anthem saying "that was for you Bret." If you watched Survivor Series 97 live to witness this, or grew up on the WWF in general around this time like many of us did back then, you'd have more of a understanding that this was a legit screw job. Anyone with a brain can see that.
Survivor Series 97- the official end of the New Generation Era, and the beginning of the Attitude Era. And all due to one moment and four words... "RING THE F*CKING BELL!"
I remember this as a kid I didn't see the PPV but the RAW after and going forward was something. It was a big turning point in wresting/sports Entertaiment people that didn't watch were talking about this for weeks.
Man, it has been an absolute honor to have been on this journey with you through our childhood. We were poor when I was a kid so I never got the PPVs, and like you, I haven't ever put weight on what people said about this night. I hate that this was the way your favorite wrestler ended his career with the WWF, but it's time for the Attitude Era now. So stoked for the rest. Oh! And I just found out we got the same name. See you Thursday!

Bret was one my heroes growing up. Even being an American, I was a huge fan. I always wanted to be that kid that got the sunglasses. Shame how they did him here.
The music during the buildup 22:41 is great, sounds like a pre final boss theme in a video game and this actual rivalry feels like it.
Were all proud of you Davey Boy! Good job overcoming the chin lock addiction!
This was very well put together. Your videos and commentary are always edited nicely. I’ve been a supportive subscriber for awhile now and I NEVER comment but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy your content. Thank you for inviting us along to relive some of the most memorable and iconic moments in our childhood. We lived to watch wrestling in those adolescent years. We were Certainly tried and true wrestling fans.
Be well! 💯🔥♥️
To this day I don't want to watch the full Montreal screw match.....I love you Bret Hart
Dude, I love your content! You put so much great and honest work into these pieces.
The stone cold vs Owen Hart and Kane vs Mankind are fun to watch. But they get overlook
Like everything in "IYH over the Edge"
Thank you Davey for entertaining us with your skills in the ring. Even though you had demons with Chinlocks, you overcame them. As for His Excellency, you are still one of my favorites on Reliving The War, hope to see you soon in WCW.
The biggest moment in the wars history. This was the turn. It was so sad and shocking to see this. Bret didn't want to leave but had no choice
I absolutely cannot speak highly enough about your videos. Always excited to see the original music for each video and the editing is so good.
I was at that show im from montreal and I remember how everyone was disgusted by the ending
Not sure if it’s on a set schedule or you had someone upload it for you, but I hope this is a sign that you are on the road to recovery bro 🙏🏾👊🏾
The night Bret Hart got screwed, that’s what I’ll always remember the most about Survivor Series 1997.
Brett was "screwed" for well over a year. it was IiteraIIy his gimmick for awhiIe
I love all your videos but this your best to date, you covered that whole PPV and situation brilliantly 👏
Bret vs Hogan should have been money match but nope politics got in the way
@@HabsMike25 doesn’t work for me brother. That was the politics. Hogan being Hogan 🙄
@@r.zaneprice4812 No arguments there. It was Hogan being Hogan
@Lee Hayman The greatest wrestling documentary of all time.
I'll be honest, memes aside, it's kinda sad getting to points like this where you know guys we've been watching since the start are now going elsewhere or leaving and disappearing.
Always gotta respect Bret Hart for standing up for what he believed in. They definitely did him wrong that night
He did himself wrong
They both did wrong
Bret is my all time favourite, but he was in the wrong on this occasion.
Yeah Vince never had to put the belt back on Bret at summer slam.He was depending to much on Bret right up to the end.Glad Bret held his ground.
Many years earlier though Shawn and Marty got screwed in favor of Bret and Anvil. But they act like adults' while Bret throws a giant temper tantrum when he gets screwed in favor of Shawn .
This may be my favorite intro mashup yet, keep rolling out the hits brother
Watching that pay per view live at 13 with that ending, I instantly felt this was going to change wrestling forever
Gotta say, this is one of the most anticipated Wrestling Bios' videos yet.
Lol.
WcW took one of the best wrestlers ever, and made him a mid carder. Dumb dumb dumb
@@Dr-Alexander-The-Great "That works for me, brother."
100% not a work Brets emotions still raw to this day, brilliant episode
Bret said it himself plenty of times, wrestlers are some of the greatest actors.
Rick rude and Jim cornette verified that it was legit.
This set up to the match is iconic. Well done, Wrestling Bios!
At the time my favorite match was the LOD crew vs the Nation (Ken Shamrock was one of my favorite good guy wrestlers at the time)
with a tear streaming down my eyes i'm happy that Davey overcame is chinlock addiction.
You couldn't have said better when you described the Shawn vs Bret saga. Right on point my guy!
Life went on
WWF went to new highs
The true saddest thing was Bret loosing his brother
Another sad thing, was Bret being hurt by Goldberg
I remember watching this on TV as a 14 year old. The end of the main event still sticks in my mind. It was so surreal. I thought to myself, "well, wrestling just got real" and I never saw it the same way again. My childhood as a wrestling fan died but my young teenage to young adult years as a wrestling fan started and I lived through the greatest era of all time, the Attitude Era.
the Montreal screwjob is so infamous that I never really thought about the rest of the ppv.. kinda wish it didn't happen.. Bret's renaming years of his career was absolutely wasted in WCW
Not only wasted, thanks to a freak accident/not-properly trained performer it was cut short!
Goldberg, the stiffest most overrated wrestler in the business. Would also explain why his football career also didn't take off either.
Oh man.... here we go. Not technically part of the war but SUCH AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT part of it.
I've been wanting to see this particular Survivor Series for years. One giveaway as to the fact that the Screwjob wasn't a work was that this Survivor Series was NOT released on hard copy when the prerequisite Survivor Series events were released on the WWE DVD box set.
So we've finally arrived to the point that changed the landscape of professional wrestling
What a time to be alive to relive this war
I was always a Michaels fan but I remember watching the Match and when the bell rung I was totally confused and thinking something is not right? It's a shame Bret left that way only to be treated even worse in WCW.
I will always remember watching this ppv live and also being confused of the ending. Had no idea I was watching history in the making.😎👍
So damn good.
I think Im going to rewatch this series, kind of bummed me out this end of a era...
Also Bret Hart Mix was banging
Survivor Series 97- the official end of the New Generation Era, and the beginning of the Attitude Era. And all due to one moment and four words... "RING THE F*CKING BELL!"
I remember this as a kid I didn't see the PPV but the RAW after and going forward was something. It was a big turning point in wresting/sports Entertaiment people that didn't watch were talking about this for weeks.
Stone cold vs Mcmahon feud was excellent. Bret hart vs mcmahon may have been good too.
