On Board Amtrak (Accommodations And Services) 1994

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Re-upload of the deleted and classic 1994 promo video produced by Amtrak to advertise the various services, classes of service, and accommodations throughout the Amtrak system through two main characters; Susan and Jack's trip from Los Angeles to Baltimore via the Sunset Limited, Silver Star, and Metroliner to see Jack's grandpa, while Jim Evans, which is the chief of onboard services, guides them throughout the journey showing them and the audience additional features inside the trains. This video covers the Superliner and single-level equipment as well as the Metroliner service on the Northeast Corridor as they were in 1994. This video may not be reflective of what services are available today. This is a screen recording from the original video uploaded to UA-cam, (once viewable by Wayback Machine, however was recently removed from the archive) so therefore some buffering from the Wayback video player can be seen, though I have mostly edited it out. Enjoy!

i love old vhs vids like this mad cheesy but they give off a cozy vibe
Neat old video!! 👍
Definitely! A couple days ago I was looking for it but the original uploaded deleted it, so I searched through Wayback Machine web archives to find it and upload it here.
Wow did you ask mr.peabody for the wayback traime machine
Poor Jim, unemployed now. They cancelled The Sunset.
Thanks for bringing this back. It always makes me smile.
You re ceratly welcome Tonee Keating I pretty much feel the same way I too am a rail fan I am a few months away from being 61 years old
This is so cheesy yet it's beautiful at the same time. Ah the 90s. Back when videos make you want to do something efficient, productive and exciting. I miss this.
Although some of the services are no longer offered this video still to this day years and years later reflects the true feeling of travel by train! We go every year on a long distance trip via Amtrak and it is one of the biggest highlights of our year!
Jim is your new daddy, Jack
I hope there are some more of those old Amtrak commercials out there to be revived on here. Anybody remember "Grandpa and Grandma go to see the Grandkids" from the 1980s, seeing the sunset in a gorgeous refurbished HEP Heritage Fleet dome car after a wonderful having had a wonderful supper, then cuddling up together in a nice sleeper? And of course ar the end, the kids happily shouting "Grandma! Grandpa!" Sort of like this. And the grandparents in the 1980s actually looked like grandparents back then, like great grandparents do today.
Something about the vintage aspect and happiness of this commercial and those old vintage 1980s commercials could be brought back...even if they had to LIE. People are going to want happiness when COVID-19 is over. Like here. Chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Also like the Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial of the 1970s (NOT "KFC!!!") that has been playing lately. Listening Amtrak Marketing???
I’ve been looking for this for 2 years! Thx
I am watching this while on the Amtrak. Gives me quite the giggle.
Very nice
Meanwhile, in modern day Amtrak, they don’t have any of this anymore. I find that sad.
Yes, they pretty much do have all of this on modern Amtrak trains. I've traveled within the last couple of years and found all these amenities although the dining services have since been scaled back on some routes.
The good news is that it's coming back
So pretty much everything's the same including the superliner cars
They will back with new refurbish interior along with new modern locomotive ALC 42 Charger and Amtrak will procure new bi mode coaches to replace aging metroliner cars, amfleet and horizon car.
To echo the other comments, modern day Amtrak is not wildly different then what is shown on this film. The Amfleet and Superliner cars still reign supreme across the system (and I find the current refurbishment of the Amfleets have them looking and feeling far more attractive and modern then they were in this video). The Viewliners (two generations of them) showed up and greatly enhanced offerings on the eastern trains. Obviously on quite a few trains they scaled back the quality of the food service, but they toyed around with that even back in the 80s and 90s on many routes, and there aren't movies in the lounge cars and there isn't Railphone anymore. The Metroliners have been replaced by the Acela Express. Those Amfleet first class seats in this video actually looked more luxurious then the Acela Express seats I must admit though!
Yeah but what happened to the custom class coach seats all they have now is coach and if you’re lucky, business class. On the Lakeshore Limited, they just had coach and sleeper. No slumber coach, Just roomettes, bedrooms and ADA bedrooms.
I'm impressed! I really am!
Awesome stuff, a bit corny but its the good kind of corny! One observation I have made, 27 years into the future (August 2021), my Amfleet coach on the Southbound Vermonter had the same rattle as the first class Metroliner club car shown towards the end of the video! I think the luggage rack railings above the seats get loose and they rattle like that. Thanks for posting this bit of Amtrak history, its cool to see how much has changed and how much hasn't changed over the years.
Sad to watch now that most of the services offers no longer exist such as service to Florida on the sunset limited, a movie in the lounge car, and the slumber coaches and buffet service along with the free pillows in coach and the silver star train.
The movies are from the days before you'd have your own devices for entertainment.
Jack will find out Jim is his real Dad.. A trip Jack will never forget.
I was thinking about how fun it would be to redub this with that plot.
@@scrawnywhiteguys7076Great idea oh hell ya. I'm not good all with video editing videos
Awwwww the old days of the f40ph
When is the BNSF oil train
you finally uploaded
Thanks to the CEO of Amtrak, he killed a lot of the benefits; and a lot of this is now gone.
Nick Allen-Friel I hope he brings back what Anderson took away
Amtrak has received a boost in funding so some stuff might come back
@@JackHoffman123 it did, but still that hasn’t happened.
Idk why but it makes me feel like I’m watching a children educational show
the best way to see the country
Absolutely!
Back when Amtrak was a lot better and exciting
Cutting dining services and blaming millenials for it is the worst thing amtrak could have done. With a guy like Anderson as president (who does not even know what a train is) amtrak is going to close down. In less than 10 years the only passenger trains in the US will be commuter services, maybe some projects such as Brightline and really maybe the northeast corridor, I think.
The person you mention stepped down as from april 15th this year. But in 3 years time he must have found ample ways to disencourage the use of Amtrak long distance trains, having learned his trade in the aviation industry. Airline companies are still heavily subsidized to this day. I don't know how it is there, but in Europe no tax is paid on kerosene and tickets. Airplanes are big polluters and they consume a lot of fossil energy. It is a pity that we do not understand the word 'cooperation' in Europe, otherwise it would have been full of high-speed trains here. They do exist, but there is not yet a large cohesive network.
@@wouterpaap9343 We don't have full electrification of our rail lines in the US, so our trains pollute, though less than planes. It would be a gargantuan task to put lines all over the country to electrify the trains, though it would definitely help the environment.
I've travelling on Amtrak train even before Amtrak became nationwide (formerly individual railroad passengers companies became no longer confused with many transfers) for over 54 years. I hopped once or twice a year acrossing any part of USA as I love it and no matter if the train is delays or on time because train travellings are blasting with wonderful socially different people from all over the places and a beauty by looking views passing different areas too. And I'm using mostly sleeper car that is including no extra cost eating in dining car is the best! And their real foods are great! Able to walk entire each cars or standing out of train car on platform if stop for 10 or more minutes (don't wonder away from platform then the train will left by catch up on schedule or be on-time a minute or two before). While monitoring to the completely refueling in locomotives, done by exchanging suitcases in baggage car, finishing refueling water each car and less passengers hopping in or hopping out will be leaving early as a schedule.
I used took Southern Pacific (SP) Peninsula Commuter trains for years. SP ran between San Francisco and San Jose, now called Caltrain extended to Gilroy (south of San Jose).
Once pandemic will be over and I will resume traveling again plus, dining car foods will resume standard real good food.
For you guys are taking a short trip on any long distance Amtrak to see if you like the train before taking longer trip. Also, check train status (keeping repeating if a train is catch up) for the arrival to save your waiting. Enjoy!
Wow, this acting and dialogue is so amazingly bad it's good. Scripted and directed by Amtrak marketing folks -- what could possibly go wrong?
Notice it’s F40PH locomotives doing the job, love those locomotives so much.
1993 is when the P40s were phased in - the Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited were the first routes to start using them
Ahhh the memories can i get a amen
Bill Clinton & Thomas Downs were the two men that ruined Amtrak in the 90`s.
And Richard Anderson in the 2010s
This kid kind of sounds like Mike Teavae. Especially when he said,I thought this was a vacation at 13:37.
They still offer coffe and juice along with Breakfast for Sleeping Car passengers
used to watch this all the time as a kid. a little corny lol but i still enjoyed it😀

I once watched part of this vid when I was little and I think it was deleted so when I found this I watched thru the hole thing since I never had the Time to see everything Ty for posting this
The editing, acting and music is the most 90s thing I've ever seen.
Why can’t Amtrak dining go back to this thanks Anderson you ruined Amtrak big time
@Chris Johnson I worked for Amtrak October 1995-November 2002 as an Onboard Service Employee it seems whenever a former CEO or other Airline Management tries to turn Amtrak into an Airline on Rails. I agree somehow Amtrak needs to become profitable but cutting long distance dining service (traditional dining car) not quite the choice. I started working on the Auto Train which is one of the long haul trains that is profitable and Regular dining car service (Atleast in coach) was downgraded. I went on to work out of Washington DC worked MeteoLiner Northeast direct now known as Northeast Refional and Acela
@@robertbauers2210 speaking of NortheastDirect why did Amtrak decided to rebrand all of the named trains on the NEC in 1995
@Chris Johnson from what I remember, it was changed due to confusion of Acela Express and Northeast Regional passengers thought “Direct was with limited station stops like Express few stops
@@robertbauers2210 Amtrak is slowly bringing back the traditional dining for all trains. It's going to take a little while but eventually it will go back to normal
@AE86 I’m glad they are
Wish they would redo this video.
@@LARailProductions after COVID is over with perhaps
@@LARailProductions Amtrak is so much better than it was in previous years
Idk why but this is the most forced acting I’ve ever seen
I've purchased the DVD approx. 7 years ago & will still watch it. Everything was brand new then & service was better. They've eliminated the Chiefs of On Board Services around Y2K & finally added a Metropolitan Lounge in L.A. updated the one in Chicago, & built a shiny new one in NYC. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to experience the difference back then knowing things would change for the worse. All that's left are fond memories through videos.
I'm sure will go. But .. may need meal ticket review also. Information on files with sends. Also d.b.s. ' s. Addition mentioned. Am radio also. Date abd flags facilitys distrcts
Amtrak enters the 90s
I must admit I m a rail fan I have n t been on Amtrak since October 1995 Before the demise of commercial passenger trains I would take family vacations by train
There should be a where are they now video.
Take a look on IMDb. You’ll only find the actress that plays the mother Susan in anything recent. You can find Jim in some episodes of the Wishbone kids show that was on around the same time this was made.
I also remember these ads and services then! Great video!
"Look at this mom, a PC!" while the mom dials on a payphone. 23:49
I bet Jack knows everything about trains 🚆 in the UK where I live
Surprise appearance at the end by the ICE train! Also don't get why they went from LA to Baltimore via Florida, added 2 nights to the trip haha
The most direct route would be the Southwest Chief to Chicago, then Capitol Limited to DC, then NE Regional or Acela to Baltimore. Jack did mention that “there’s a more direct route” - very likely referring to the Southwest Chief, which runs daily and has more ridership unlike the Sunset Limited
Tv radio time life greats.
I wonder what happened to Jim
Not a real Amtrak employee. If you look online you can see the actor in a couple other places.
Train travel is the best.
This is wonderful
Now i thought lead crew does continue the full length of the train, but does return to their base. With Jim on the Sunset Limited, i would figure he would be based in either LA or Miami. Given he’s also on the Silver Star (and it’s a stretch) i’d figure he’s Miami base. And since the Silver services run through to New York, and stops in Baltimore, isn’t the change to Metroliner unnecessary, and actually slower? As well, the metroliner looks a lot more like the Northeast Regional than the Metroliner, i don’t recall any metroliners being in Phase III. And the ICE 1 was only the future for seven months. Yeah yeah, they had to prove a point, but trying to sprinkle some reasoning and logic into this.
He’s an actor which is why it doesn’t make sense. Not a real Amtrak employee.
It’s very likely that the metro-liner they are riding is only the service, and not the train sets.
The OBS crew for the Sunset Limited is based out of Los Angeles and the staff on Silver Service trains are based out of New York
The actors were so believable!
At 11:03 Beautiful F40PH
Does anyone know if Amtrak still does a slumber coach?
That's been discontinued for decades.
I think that was a Heritage fleet thing
They should make coach seats convertible to lay flat seats so that passengers can sleep comfortably, but passengers could bring their own pillow/blanket (Amtrak wouldn’t provide bedding supplies and first class privileges to Coach passenger like they do for sleeping car passengers)
There are sleeper rooms just like theirs and "roomettes" as well. Their room costs a ton but a roomette can be reasonable.
I L❤VE this video. Always makes me smile 😊
