The fact that you paused the music during the incredible drop at the beginning to say “oh it’s so good” is being investigated as a crime against Super Earth.
For me, "A Cup of Liber-Tea" is up there with "Daredevil" from Ace Combat 7, and "Showdown" from Project Wingman in regards to hype-generating-awesomeness.
It seems to harken back to Basil Poledouris and his works, such as Klendathu Drop from Starship Troopers. He was the guy that composed the Starship Troopers sound track and Helldivers takes A LOT from Starship Troopers, therefore it is not surprising that Poledouris's style is emulated.
@@NuclearFalcon146 It's funny you mention Poledouris, as he's (was) one of my favorite composers. I think the reminiscence of it comes from the game's focus on the brass section, which is overwhelmingly utilized in Poledouris' works. Listen to Robocop's theme, as an example.
@@NuclearFalcon146 Yeah there is some Poledouris in here (obviously), but this style reminds me much more of Thomas Bergersen from Two Steps From Hell. Especially some of his older tracks.
I can’t believe no one’s talking about the fact that the the four notes of the brass in the main motif of the song feature a descending pattern, which plays very prominently the very moment you Helldive, to the point that with four players it almost fires the individual hellpods to the music. As if the music itself is telling you, you are descending into hell.
@@GrumpyEyeAudio Well, of course the 4 notes in a descending pattern is very obvious to anyone, but connecting that to the game being about 4 people descending to hell is interesting 😊
The thing that gets me about Will’s score is that it’s actually really well-written music. Especially in regards to the orchestration and counterpoint/counter melody. He’s not faking it, even though the game is heavily satirical. Basically everything we hear after those first four brass notes is based on that theme. Even the B section of the first part is based on the ascending version of the same intervals
ikr i was super impressed haven't heard that in game music too often (also might be because i don't play as much as I used to) but definitely here it movie scores.
I asked him a few questions about plugins and what was recorded, and he responded that everything but the high winds was recorded (he thinks), and that the brass has Hollywood horns with hipass layered on top to bring out the mids more. I would definitely contact him and ask him questions if you have any, he seems to be very on top with responses!
For me the Helldivers 2 soundtrack wades into Halo territory of epicness and recognizability. It helps that the game itself is great, but the music adds a whole new dimension and makes everything you do seem more grand and meaningful.
@@RudyBleeker I agree. Most games I play with my own music in the background but I have been playing HD II with the native music due to how much it adds to the general tone and feel.
The piano section where you explain exactly WHAT is being done and HOW it sounds, it really helps to pull it together and understand, along with the other musical rules and such. Also idk what piano that is and if it's using a preset or something, but it has this nice emotion to it in how the keys sound.

I play with the music off a bit more often than not nowadays. I’m honestly IN LOVE with the sound track, genuinely cannot fault it at all, I’ve just played so much of the game that now I can start to feel the music become a tad repetitive (my own fault for playing loads). Sometimes I play with no music and just SFX and it sounds so brutal and real in level 9. Other times I’ll play with music for. Other games, movies or tv shows and that’s been a blast!
I almost always turn off the music in games. All my friends who play were talking about hiw good the music was so now I have it on like 25 super low in the background so I dont usually hear it unless its pretty quite (rarely)
Music really can make and break games. Just the other day I watched a scene from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth without music and it was awkward as hell(copyright stuff on UA-cam does that a lot).. however I have rarely found music in a game not fitting.. while I have heard it in film and television a lot of times. The only times I had unfitting music in games was due to bugs or bad development quality control..
Will's been responding to every comment I've seen, I sent him an email and he replied with the most detailed response, twice. I love his use of harmony throughout all the games he's composed for, and the complex rhythms he used when you're fighting the terminids are awesome (he said he took inspiration from Jerry Goldsmith's Planet of the Apes with that. A lot of his music is great for studying as well, check out the Mortal Combat 11 and 1's scores, lots of really nice use of harmony and instrumentation.
