    I stayed up late to watch that show back in 1968 because I had just seen a Dali painting for the first time about two weeks before (shown by my Junior High School art teacher) and was blown away by it. I still remember his point about how the word "papillon" sounds like the flying insect it refers to while the word "butterfly" does not. I determined that night that I was going to grow up to be an eccentric creative genius who gains fame and fortune on the basis of my artistic mastery. It hasn't worked out.

    I remember this show when it aired back in the 60's.
    I also remember him doing an interview in the same period, he had his moustache curled up around his eyes like a pair of eyeglasses, when asked about it he said "I want to see the world through my moustache ".
    He was an amazing man and equally amazing artist. Though a bit eccentric.

      A "bit" eccentric? I think you got it backwards... eccentricity is a bit Dali.

      not so incompréhensible, he's saying that he works straight from his imagination, instinct. After, the scentists analyze it for an audience etc etc, but that it comes straight from his unmessed with imagination and instinct as he creates..

    I saw the entire show. Dick was increasingly frustrated by not being able to understand Dali. He asked him politely to slow down but that didn't help. All of Dali' s comments were met with incomprehension. Dick asked if he was mixing languages but Dali didn't know what he meant. It was a terrible interview. Halfway Dick did that finger in his ears thing , which was very rude. You could tell how insulted Dali was. As soon as the show was over, Dali got up and walked off even tho the other two guests stayed on stage to talk with Dick. I realize Dali was eccentric but he was a guest and treated badly because of the way he talked. I don't think Dick tried hard enough to understand. He turned Dali into a caricature. That's just sad.

      Despite Dalí eccentricities and playful nature, the man had a hidden wit and intelligence that could leave you pondering for weeks. The true "clown" here is Dick. Even the anteater is more intelligent than him. As a host, he should have known better than anyone the antics of this world renowned eccentric artist. Had Dick had wit, he could have made the interview into something special and entertaining. He just couldn't handle the complex character of Dalí even if he had spoken perfect english.

    • @christhayil8354
      @christhayil8354 4 роки тому +4

      It was all part of Dali's genius….he knows he's going to get made fun of and was not immune to that. He also knew that the DC show was paying him a lot of money to be there, and that his exposure, especially while he was well into his 70s or so, would bring him more attention and $$$! Many artists and entertainers get passed up by his age, so it was a good move for him to get noticed again.

    Okay, people, let's just take a moment to think how the world worked back then, when Dalí was alive. He sure was rough with the anteater, but it wasn't physically harmed. Probably more confused and scared, because of the audience etc. Back then animals were animals and people were taught that way. People didn't think the animals had feelings, memory etc. like us. They didn't know. And anteaters and all other animals experience much worse fates and stuff in the wild among the predators, rough land (not soft fluffy carpet like here) and diseases. He was maybe rough with animal, but he didn't harm to the extent of withdrawing the animals from his possession. Animals aren't glass, they can handle things as long as they're not beaten or tossed around with force on hard surfaces. I don't like his handling of anteater either, but I can't blame him for not knowing about these things. After all, the animals weren't in his possession for long periods of time, if I recall right. He just found and used them in public to give shock entrance.
    In his book "Diary of a genius" he had a cat in Spain, which he apparently treated very well. Atleast, in his own words, cat purred and slept next to him in his bed.
