people seem to get this sense from a lot of the surrealist crowd. it's a thoroughly modern art movement, but we all still seem to pigeonhole is as "old art" and thus pre-20th century. you most commonly see it when people flip out over color photos of Picasso, as if he were a renaissance painter.

If one day you will create a piece of art that completely fulfill all of your objectives, the perfect work, the ultimate testament of yourself... then you are done, you have nothing more to say. Why keep going on if you reached your own pinnacle? Your life as an artist has ended. He realized that art is not a relativistic term and that his primary claim to fame was based on the zeitgeist rather than the timeless skill and technique of those great masters. He said that he was intelligent because he didn't have to commit like they did and toil and suffer endlessly to perfect their art, but could instead "smear" some stuff together, get rich and go about living his life in all of it's facets.

Those close to Dali have stated he was highly superstitious. He would never let himself say I am a great painter because he preferred to live longer. Any genius that perfected their art and knew they were the best die young or live shorter lives...and he preferred to paint "badly" so he could live a long life. The fact was he could paint anything if he wished.

"I'm too intelligent to be a good painter"
    I understand this.
In the way I can identify with this, I'll tell you I make music. I think my music is terrible and for the most part it's because I have to learn so much about what I'm doing and how to do it, that it removes the feeling behind what I create. "You have to be a bit stupid to create good art". Stupid in the sense that you have to let your creations be mostly natural feelings and less focused thought. I'm almost never satisfied with my creations because they never express what I feel. This is because I spend too much time and energy finding/creating sounds I've never heard instead of creating the melodies that my heart sings.
This is how I interpreted this quote. I hope it makes sense to someone.

    • @Marcotonio
      @Marcotonio 3 роки тому +4

You're not alone, buddy. I'm highly analytical, so art is my Achilles' heel. And yet I chose it as a career... For music, which is a hobby in my case, I have about 2 years of conservatory theory under my belt but the only instrument I can play is clicking notes with a mouse on a DAW. What I intend to do is to learn how to play an instrument and cover other songs, so I can get the "feeling", rather than the cold hard theory. For drawing (my main area), having limitations is liberating. Be it themes, deadlines, time limits. Keep pushing!

All due respect to you, you seem like a really nice dude, I think that’s a bunch of cop-out bullshit. I’m not going to brag on about myself, but I’ve always had an solid academic aptitude, and I’ve discovered that making “good” art requires you to develop certain sensibilities over time, it requires you to narrow down what you’re looking for in art to its critical elements and focus solely on those things; it’s a very intentional craft. Yes, it’s visceral, but it’s in equal parts an intellectual pursuit.
Intelligence is never a bar to quality in art, lack of persistence is. Most people are shit for many years when they start. Just because you’re bad from a more cerebral vantage point doesn’t mean it’s your intelligence that makes you bad. Intelligent people often have a rich emotional world to pull from in the creation of their art. They only have to become well versed in expressing those emotions through a medium, like anybody else. They may need to let go of their bent toward perfection A BIT, but largely, that will help them succeed. Intelligent people have an advantage in art. Most artists are on the higher end of the IQ spectrum.

I think he meant to say he wasn't actually crazy, after all, that was sort of Dalí's trademark, his public icon: "Dalí's a crazy man and that's why he paints surreal (crazy) stuff" but not really, he was in rather good health and position. There's an ideology that actual crazy and weird people tend to make the most powerful pieces that do get to people the instant they look at it, they feel the intensity and emotion put into their work, and perhaps this is what Dalí aknowledged, that he was intelligent instead, and intelligent people know how to handle their lives, people that's not normal on the other hand, they suffer it, they have trouble handling life and you can see that amplified struggle put into their work. I think that's what Dalí meant by being an "idiot", and for that reason, he could not reflect that much of an emotional presence in his work, but rather showcase the concept of surrealism. That's why he calls himself a bad painter.

@@s.reinhardt3670 To discredit the brilliance of his work because of "it only became popular because of the scandal behind it" excuse is stupid. I have seen a lot people starting to discredit and put Leonardo da Vinci and a lot of great historical figures name's to obscurity in exchange for the others in their favor. I'm seeing a pattern here.

If SCANDALS were what made one's art popular, none of you would even hear Dali, Van Gogh or Da Vinci over my fans chanting my name.
      Period.

Salvador Dali used to go for sleep holding his keys above a plate.By the time he would fall asleep, he woke up due to the sound the keys made and go paint something. He did so like many other artists because the moment we fall asleep our fantasy hits its peak level.

Dali has a very unique perspective on what it means to be good at painting
Some would say that it takes knowledge, wisdom, practice, and intuition to perfect the craft.
Dali says it takes a bit of stupidity.
    VERY different perspectives indeed.

I think you misunderstood what he meant. He didn't mean it in the way that the moment he paints a painting that is on theirs level, he can die because then he is fulfilled. What he meant was the that if he would do that, he would die, as he knew that great artists die young. He was superstitious, basicly. He was a crazy, arrogant, but none the less great man.

A few years ago I was in London visiting my then partner's family. The day we were leaving we found out about a Dali exhibition going on. Had to leave his family 3 hours early so I could visit. Aw I was like a giddy child in front of the artwork I had only seen in books before. Then I turned round and in the middle of the room, surrounded by railings and rope, was one of the Mae West Lip sofas. Not a security guy in sight. Very few people in the area. I handed my camera to my partner and said take a pic jumped the rope and sat on the sofa!!! I sat for about 1.5 seconds and it felt brilliant!!! I was like a naughty schoolkid breaking the rules. He would have appreciated that I thought.
