Great vid! I own 2 YZ250, a 2000 and a 2002. Love both bikes. This isn’t the only way to do a trail build. I’ve had both my favorite bikes cylinders modified for a better low end power delivery through Eric Gore. He tuned the cylinders for a better more smooth power delivery. Yes gearing from a 250x most certainly is flawless but you don’t absolutely need it. I love my 2 YZ250s, trails are all I do. I’m 58 years old and the YZ is my absolute bike. I’ve been offered a KTM here and there and they most certainly have the luxury of an electric start, a plush suspension, and stuff that would make a dirt bike take to The moon! I really don’t need any of it. The YZ is my favorite. I own 7 dirt bikes. 3 YZ125s, 2 YZ250s, an 03 RM250 trail modded, and a 03 CR500AF from an 03 blow to crap CRF450! All bikes are 2 strokes because when you really do know the science, for all around riding and not ALL racing the 2 stroke will take you very far from home with an absolute reliability, so long you know your bike and the maintenance of it. The Euro bikes are fantastic, I find them to make me lazy. I don’t want one.
Eric Gorr was a bit of a prick to me on the phone years ago, (and was partly responsible for a broken cylinder that he modified),--so I modify my own engines (do it for a living). if you want very good low end power, try this. 1) FMF Gnarley pipe: (I would like to try the stock 250x pipe, as it is a lower rpm target pipe also.). 2) V-vorce reeds with no aluminum spacer: The stock reed stop plate blocks off the 5th transfer port tunnel about 50%, and the v-force reeds open earlier for more low end power. No spacer tightenes up the primary compression a bit, for a better hit. 3) Lower the cylinder by not using a cylinder base gasket, (must use a good sealer if you don't want any leaks, (3M 847 Nitrile high performance rubber and gasket adhesive" is awesome stuff for that job.). The lower cylinder lowers the exhaust port timing to better match the lower rpm pipe, and that is where the best power gains are made, (pipe matching the porting). The squish clearance is till about .048" (.040 is about the limit for a 250cc MX bike), and the higher compression will need 100 octane fuel. Strong off the bottom, can short shift with no clutch, and not fall on it's face (190 lbs and stock gearing). Not too abrupt though, just powerful and smooth. I don't think I need a flywheel weight. No charge.
That is going to be a cool build! Being the old school guy I am, I say that if you want the ultimate two stroke trail bike just find a an early 80s IT!
I just got a yz125x and absolutely loving it. I was originally hunting for a 250x. I stoll want to try the X to compare. Im afraid i will want both for different reasons. I dont know if i will ever get rid of the 125 though. New found love and fun on the small bore.
I have the 250x. The squish with a oem top end was about .110" so I think you would be better off having the yz head redesigned with a more appropriate squish clearance.
The lower rpm pipe, that I don't see here, will probably gain more lower rpm power than all the other engine mods combined. Porting and pipe are the 2 biggest factors in power generation, especially if they are matched up well (port and pipe peak power rpm target.).
This build sounds like what I did in the early '80's......I had a YZ 465 that was in perfect condition.....trouble was that on the rough, tight trails it was killing me with too instant power and suspension. I answered an ad in the newspaper for a used 465 IT. When I got there I found it to be in good shape(blown clutch) and bought for $300. I swapped engines/trans, the shock and forks when I needed to use it on the tight/slow going. With the wide-ratio trans and IT barrel/pipe it was tamed considerably and made a really good compromise. I also took head to machinist to tame the IT even more and make it less picky for gas quality. By swapping parts I could virtually make the YZ anything I wanted it to be.....just time and effort. I used White Bros longer clutch arm to ease the pull at the lever. Hang in there. Too bad they don't still make the big 2-strokes both enduro and YZ.
thanks for sharing Tom, sounds like a great project. wow, you had a lot of fun early 80's, would be great to meet one day I listen to some of your stories. I was just getting born in early 80's. :)
I have a close friend that just finished a frame off restore on his '81 IT 465 that he had bored out to 490. Cool bike, a little scary, but still cool.
@@xterrential Sounds great! Yup....the '81 YZ had better forks but a tad bit tamer engine. If your friend has trouble with detonation there are head mods to increase squish that really help. @@dirtniron It was a nice ride....many times I was sorry that I sold it but as a fella gets older his bones don't distort like they used to do. I did not find the stock YZ250 to have hared hitting power. Soft on the bottom, almost OK in the mid-range, then smooth but pretty good acceleration to the top in an effort to keep up with a 450 on a MX track. It was probably the smoothest (and maybe the slowest), 250 MX bike I ever owned, but I fixed that. Try a 97 KX250. :)
True, the stock YZ250 has an all-around power. Once you put a top end pipe, you feel the hit more and slightly longer rev band... But you lose some bottom. The bike in stock form is actually very equilibrated.

@@dirtniron Well I rode a 300 2-stroke, then a 250, and finally a 144, and my 144 gets the most use. I ride at 6000+ ft in Colorado and weigh the same as you. I’m so excited for the conversion. I have a YZ250 that has been converted to a trail bike. I didn’t realize Yamaha changed the head, clutch springs, and CDI. Someday Yammy will add an estart and smooth out the tranny in the xline, that will be amazing!! Sweet video. Lots of my buddies years back rocked yz250s, it was tough on them on gnar single track, they moved to the yz450s and that helped a bit. one of them now has a 450fx(with a Rekluse), I like swapping bikes with him, lol.
Thanks Brad, yea it would be great to see Yamaha come out with full package, counter balancer too and maybe even 300cc engine. I bet lot of guys would get those bikes!
@@dirtniron I'm interested to see what porting mods you come up with. I have a 2002 yz250 2 stroke and I put a 13 ounce flywheel weight on it that drastically improved it's off road ability. However, with the 13 oz fww you have to bend the clutch actuator arm for clearance which wears out the cable quickly, so I would recommend not going bigger than an 11 once weight should you go that route. You do good work and this build will be entertaining.
This is awesome, I just found your channel because I have found a 2020 YZ250 for cheap and I'm wanting to make it an X because thats what I wanted but I don't know if I can pass on the deal
Hello there Love your Channel much and this is my best bike build yet coz I had the same issues few years back were I had bought a 2015 YZ-250 and Built a it up to a Enduro Race bike...I did it coz I was Not riding MX and Loved Enduro riding and Yamaha bikes💪😎 I have Raced YZ all my life growing up so that's Y sticking to YZ and not KTM or such bike that's already Enduro bike. But coming back to the point... You still need A Very Important part in this build and that's n "Weighded Flywheel" ... This is to Cary the Torque through at low Rmp's especially on the Technical climb sections...al was done om my YZ to be the X but I didn't do the flywheel and boy did I Struggle a lot on the Rocky Climbing sections! The bike kept on stalling🙈🙉 Ow and also get Radiator Guards and Electric fans it's a Big Must have!! hope this info helps a bit to get that done as well... Keep up the builds its Awesome 😁👌🏻✊🏻
I love my 250x! The suspension are tune for woods too and the engine is smooth. 2016x came with small front disc, when i step on other bike i see the need to get upgrade. Also it true the 3rd to 4 on a motocross track feel to long.
I'm here in the UK and the YZ250X is not sold here or in Europe! Wish it was . So the only option would be to do this, a YZ250 conversion. I was hoping there would be some info on where I could buy this complete kit to do a full conversion. Does anyone know if Yamaha or any other parts stores sell a full X conversion kit for a standard YZ250?
Hay there hope you had a good thanksgiving. You have really been a inspiration to me. How many set back do you have during a rebuild? I have just started rebuilding my sons KTM 105sx. Ankit Parikh ya the aluminum frame and the front forks are different to I believe, few mil bigger. The aluminum frame is stiffer which is better for motocross because it’s stronger more consistent feel on a track that’s why most new motocross bikes are aluminum frame however stiffer means it will vibrate more. Pretty sure that’s why euro enduros are all steel framed for more comfort in off-road, motocross needs the strength for jumping. So what’s better depends on what you like to ride. If you are a trail rider I would keep the steel frame, you want a better Moto bike I would look for the aluminum frame version.
Dustin Jean I’ve been riding motocross lately... so I just got this 2004 yz 125 and it seems like finding a 2005 yz 125 around Utah-Florida that I could affordably get would be hard... but not impossible. Idk if I should hope and hunt or just change the frame/shocks...? What do you think?
Ankit Parikh I don’t think the frame and suspension is night and day better than the 04 but it is still better. Depending how much and how comfortable you are with your current bike you might not even be able to feel the difference. However the 05 aluminum frame and suspension is basically what the new 2020s are so you would have the latest and greatest. You could also save the money and have a professional revalve your suspension like race tech and that would be better then stock 05 suspension. I think you have to be a pro to really benefit from the aluminum frame itself but it does look cooler and it is the most updated frame they made for the Yamaha’s 2 strokes
Very cool Rado, I'm excited to watch this build go down! I'm actually going a slightly different route, I want all of the ridiculousness of the yz250 ALONG with the low-end torque of the X and of course a suspension that's not going to tear my kidneys out. I'm curious if you'll like the X ECU once you get this thing running or whether you'll throw in the YZ stocker back in 🤔. Anyway, hurry up on the videos my man! Also your production quality is... well... I'm pretty sure youre well on your way to take the Dirt Bike build genre pole-position.
thats a great encouragement Mike! glad you like the plans for my build, I will be checking your yz250 as well, you are way faster than me ;) trying to improve my video production step by step, glad you notice the changes. There are many channels with the builds these days, they do great job with builds and vids as well, good motivation for me, thats for sure ;)
Yes the gearing sukks for tje track..3rd is to short to much pep for fast jumps while 4th has no punch and is to long for regular tracks ..gearing down helps.a bit..the transmissionis a very weak point. I bent my shift fork 3rd gear needed replaced although it did not slip it caused 5th to not fully engage .because 3rd is short and 4th is long it puts alotta pressure on gear assemblys..bad design
One other note the inside of replacement third gear was coated on. On the inside were the dogs lock in the stock one did not have this. That clearly tells us yamaha knows the problem..but why not fix it ? Mo money of course ..with no competion like a cr250 x 2st..there is no need ..
Sweet build Rado. Can't wait to watch build series...😀 It is going to be a sweet ripper, but to be honest I doubt that you can make it as good or better than 20' 250x... I am sure they have done some improvements in the swingarm, brakes, suspension(although I know that yours is yet to be rebuild) etc... Those are the small differences that make a big difference in a "long run".... Hard to believe but thing as small as slightly different angle of front suspension in the frame can make a "night and day" difference. I am not saying that they redesigned the frame, since I am not sure, but you get the point 🙂🙂🙂 I know that yz and yz"x" frame is the same and we all have heard that yz frame haven't changed for a long time, but do you think they really haven't changed? I doubt that. However I am not critising you... That's just my point of view🙂🙂🙂 Cheers from Slovakia
thanks bro, I like to set challenging goals, it pushes me to go further and work harder ;) they did not change much, with good suspension tuning, engine porting, oversized brakes and steel braided lines, etc.. we should be able to get somewhere ;)

Hi Is it possible to say what the references of the pieces mentioned in the video are? thank you and happy rounds

not sure I understand.. what do you mean?
@@dirtniron reference of the parts mentioned on the video
Did you ever continue this build I am really interested. I looked up your videos I didn't see any follow up. Thanks for this information!
Yes i have around 20 videos total, go to my main channel page - yz250 build
Awesome stuff, considering doing this to my YZ250
cool Andre, glad you like it!
Hi,
It is possible to tell the references of the pieces mentioned in the video?
Thank you and full gaz ✊

Cool project. If you get the chance, doing a Eric Gore 300 or ESR 325 kit would be fun to watch also.
thanks man! I did Eric Gorr 300 on my KTM, this time I want to keep it 250 and play with porting and other stuff
The ESR 325 cylinder is steel sleeved and not nickasil coated. Big jump backwards in technology
This is awesome, I just found your channel because I have found a 2020 YZ250 for cheap and I'm wanting to make it an X because thats what I wanted but I don't know if I can pass on the deal
cool Philip, that is a really solid bike you will love it!
Keep up the builds its Awesome 😁👌🏻✊🏻
great info, thanks a lot Newton! I will experiment with flywheel weight for sure
Isn’t the cylinder different too, the exhaust port is raised 5mm higher, and the exhaust pipe is shaped different too.
Nice project Rado, this is going to be a great build.
thanks brother, hope so!
Very nice breakdown, now I undertstand what the X is about. Thanks! Oh... no heavier flywheel?
glad you like it, I decided to not do FWW at this time
I love my 250x! The suspension are tune for woods too and the engine is smooth. 2016x came with small front disc, when i step on other bike i see the need to get upgrade. Also it true the 3rd to 4 on a motocross track feel to long.
thanks for sharing Gabriel, I plan to use big rotor and braided lines for the brakes
The cylinder is different too on a X model.
Do you simply change 3rd,4th and 5th gears or is there a shaft that must be changed to accommodate these gears?
yes, just change those 3 gears
I'm here in the UK and the YZ250X is not sold here or in Europe! Wish it was . So the only option would be to do this, a YZ250 conversion. I was hoping there would be some info on where I could buy this complete kit to do a full conversion. Does anyone know if Yamaha or any other parts stores sell a full X conversion kit for a standard YZ250?
Love the new intro rado! This will be a cool build!
thanks bro, appreciate it!
Rado,
were you able to use the power valve from the 250x in the YZ 250 jug without modifying the exhaust port?
i ended up using stock YZ power valve
Hay mate are the stock exhaust on both bikes the same or has 250x have different exhaust from factory,
not 100% sure, but think they are the same
I wonder how it would be if you kept the 250 head instead of swapping to the 250x head. more compression? Wonder how much different the power would be
I got both heads modded by Tom Morgan Racing, one for pump gas and one for race gas
Cool project Rado! looking forward to see how it all works out for you!
thanks man!
Don't forget the revalved shocks the X has. A lot softer ride for trails.
yep, already done for my weight and skills for trails, Racetech did the work
Sounds like a worthy build!...l hope the other Japanese companies start making trail versions of their 2 strokes 👍
that would be great!
what other JP companies are making two strokes?
Hay there hope you had a good thanksgiving. You have really been a inspiration to me. How many set back do you have during a rebuild? I have just started rebuilding my sons KTM 105sx. It seams like no one has ever done any maintenance on this poor bike. Lots of broken bolts or missing hardware. Love your videos you are a real resource for good entertainment and information
Thanks bro, glad you like the videos. There are some difficulties on the builds, but once you overcome it the results are super rewarding. 😉
Wow! Thanks for that great idea sir. it really helps alot in converting motorcross bikes into Trail bikes. Hope i can meet you someday
Thanks bro! That would be cool 😉
@@dirtniron Do you know where i can buy cheaper bikes from your place? im from the Philippines and I want to buy some Dirt bikes then sell it here or make it my project bikes.
i buy all my bikes here sandiego.craigslist.org/
Hey there, I am thinking of buying a yz250f, probably 2018, or 2019 (preferably 2019) as I’ve mentioned before in one of your other videos, so I was wondering if it’s possible and easy enough to get your hands on a yz250f and review it, that would be really appreciated and helpful, but I understand you may not have the time or it might not be easy to get one for the review so that’s fine if you cannot make a review.
hey Darcy, I spent some time on 2019 yz250f this year and its a great machine, you will love it. Here is the video from the track: ua-cam.com/video/gNUneAih-GY/v-deo.html
Great new production value! Well done!!
thanks!
Will this work on any year yz250 two stroke mine is a 1999
I am not sure, try to check the part numbers on 1999 yz250 and 2007 yz250
Cant wait to see final project
me too, it will take few month tho.. hope this time I can do it bit faster!
I have an 03 YZ 250. Can I do the same thing?
I think so
I have an 06 yz 250 I'm converting into an X model , is there a specific X model year I should order my parts from ? (The CDI , Power Valve Actuator & Spring , Clutch Springs , and Head ?) 2015 , 16 , 17 ... ? Does it matter ? Thanks in advance.
Any year is fine, its the same as far as i know
Just the video i need.. i’m from France, and in france nobody did a video like this for explain that, i would made a 250x because there is no 250x in france. Thx, great video :)
cool man, glad it helps!
Daš aj lectron karbec? Endurove zapalko? Enduro koncovku vyfuku? Co tlmiče? Necháš mx nastavenie alebo das druhé struny a olej? Bude aj vacsia nadrž? Držim palce a tesim sa na dalsie videjko...drž sa Rado!😎👍😉
tentokrat dam smartcarb, tlmice budu offroad komplet prestavba (racetech)m cdi je z X model, fmf gnarly a turbinecore2, IMS nadrz.. atd :)
Dik Michal, drz sa aj ty!
What about flywheel?
I can play with it as well
Build the wall 👍
Hy Friend, i am from Austria, and we cant get an 250x here in european, thats bad… so i will make it myself-like you ! but the next problem is, i dont get the moto parts to buy … its not easy for our european guys :D so my question is -can you help me to get those things? mexx
do some research, there must be some sites shipping to Austria.. US has a lot of parts available
So Is the X still a very powerful bike? and is it as loud?
Yes
Hey man, I just got my KTM 125 sx a week ago. It started on the first and third day but just won’t start today what could be the problem?
change the plug, check the carburator, try again , good luck ;)
Anyone know how far back the parts work? Steel frame bikes also?
probably till 99 but dont quote me on that.. check thumper talk forum
What about cylinder porting? Is that the same between the yz 250 vs 250x?
i am not sure, but I will get mine ported
The exhaust is .5mm higher in the x.
Dude I was just thinking about how to convert my yz 125 into an X. You think I should sell my 04’ and get a 05’?
Ankit Parikh the yz 04 and 05 engines are exactly the same
Dustin Jean Agreed everything is very similar except for the aluminum frame... which should make some difference, no?
#excited!!!
me too!! ;)
Make sure you get a rear disc guard so you don't bend it on the trail
yes, on the list! thanks Will
Remember, pipe is diff from YZ to X, and the best pipe that suits YX250X, the OEM one
yes I heard that, but I am planing on getting gnarly FMF pipe anyway. Thanks for sharing
Clutch hub is drilled on yz250 and solid on yz250x
thanks for sharing, I did not know that. I will be getting full Hinson setup tho
Yz250x govenor mod aswell
what exactly is it?
Very cool Rado, I'm excited to watch this build go down! I'm actually going a slightly different route, I want all of the ridiculousness of the yz250 ALONG with the low-end torque of the X and of course a suspension that's not going to tear my kidneys out. I'm curious if you'll like the X ECU once you get this thing running or whether you'll throw in the YZ stocker back in 🤔. Anyway, hurry up on the videos my man! Also your production quality is... well... I'm pretty sure youre well on your way to take the Dirt Bike build genre pole-position.
thats a great encouragement Mike! glad you like the plans for my build, I will be checking your yz250 as well, you are way faster than me ;)
trying to improve my video production step by step, glad you notice the changes. There are many channels with the builds these days, they do great job with builds and vids as well, good motivation for me, thats for sure ;)
haha, It's not a race! But for sure, hurry up! 😆
Forgot the kickstand and gas tank did ya
yea, and 18 inch wheel.. but I was talking about the power/engine in this video
2 let's goo
I’m thinking about selling my 18 Crf450r to buy a 250x the 450 its Heavy and had to ride on trails
I think you would love the change. For me 450 is too much even for mx riding.
nice intro!
thanks!
Yes the gearing sukks for tje track..3rd is to short to much pep for fast jumps while 4th has no punch and is to long for regular tracks ..gearing down helps.a bit..the transmissionis a very weak point. I bent my shift fork 3rd gear needed replaced although it did not slip it caused 5th to not fully engage .because 3rd is short and 4th is long it puts alotta pressure on gear assemblys..bad design
good info Craig, thanks for sharing!
One other note the inside of replacement third gear was coated on. On the inside were the dogs lock in the stock one did not have this. That clearly tells us yamaha knows the problem..but why not fix it ? Mo money of course ..with no competion like a cr250 x 2st..there is no need ..
You don't need any of this , just get rekluse auto and air down rear tire...braaapppppp
i am not a big rekluse fan..
That’s intriguing. Can you explain why that works so well?

That's just my point of view🙂🙂🙂 Cheers from Slovakia
thanks bro, I like to set challenging goals, it pushes me to go further and work harder ;) they did not change much, with good suspension tuning, engine porting, oversized brakes and steel braided lines, etc.. we should be able to get somewhere ;)
idk why but i think you are italian
haha, I have different accent tho.. my friend is Italian.. they have different melody to their language. I am from Slovakia
I can't eaven hear what he's saying
Ma quanto cazzo parlano gli americani
