Small correction to this video. The second set of engines are Lycoming Gas turbines, powering the water jets.
I bet at full speed it uses about 200 gallons of fuel per mile. lol.
I was just wondering about water jets. They are more efficient at that speed.
Kind of thought it was strange having two different sets of diesels with similar horsepower. Thanks for clearing that up great video as usual.
Correct, 2 gas turbines total 9600hp on 2-1 gearbox to the middle Wartsila waterjet and the Paxman enginenes give the power to "smaller" waterjets. (worked as commissioning engineer on the propulsion was a interesting project)
Would just love to be the captain of this fine vessel. Peace.
Holy crap is that fast. If you've never been fast on the water, speed is totally different than land. I think you should do some more extreme videos like this one. As always, your videos are AWESOME.
As an merchant navy engineer I'm not soon surprised by the numbers of yachts, but 70 knots tops, I had to play it again to be sure I heard what you said. And 50 knots cruising. we cruise at 14 o.O
There have been many questions raised about this yacht and its owner. As far as im aware he failed to prove his claimed top speed. There is footage of it going crazy fast, so im sure it can, but if its really reaching the 70 knots? i doubt it.
@@maxb2787
The Discovery Channel made a video that aired at least 6 or 7 years ago on television featuring the owner in question. Called Extreme Yachts.
There might be a clip here on UA-cam.
The yacht he had built at the time was about 100 feet long and could do at least 50 knots.
I wish I could remember the name of that yacht and the speed she attained.
He was asked how much did it cost to fill her up.
He replied with:
"It will melt your credit card."
I love these short Q&A videos Esysman. If I had a super yacht, you’d have a standing invitation to stay in the VIP cabin as a guest. You’re too much fun to be crew.
When they were building the yacht I worked on, they wanted a guaranteed top speed of 16 knots. Everybody was absolutely thrilled when it turned out to have a top speed of 17 knots. Woohoo!
the perfect yacht to outrun pirates. LOL
The perfect boat to Chase down pirates
@@Strategic1now lol true 😂💪
The perfect yacht to smuggle drugs 😳
But for how long?
It can't outrun missiles
For those asking, some estimated fuel consumption figures at full throttle. . . . . 2,200 gallons per hour , or 8,300 litres per hour.
How did you come up with that number? Not saying it's not correct, just wondering.
If this is correct, then she would have a range of around 450 miles at that speed!
At hull speed, it is claimed she can do 3800 miles.
@@tysleight Diesel engines typically use a certain amount of fuel per hour for a given horsepower output and it can be calculated fairly easily.
@@charlieodom9107 She aint using anywhere near her 40,000hp to achieve hull speed and the range reflects that.
@@BennyTheWoo what kind of stupid are you? Do you really think people believe it would take 40,000hp to move this boat at hull speed? There are 4 engines for a reason!!!
It’s great to see the boundaries of naval architecture being explored in such awesome ways.
Give it a AWD system, it will prevent the spin out
That is like a mansion going down the road at 80mph:)
lol yeah.. thats crazy to think about
But just think that a aircraft carrier will blow by them all doing 30+ knots. Just think about it.
@@MrThisIsMeToo Blow by all of who?
@@rx7dude2006 Sorry. Most all of the super yachts, save for this one.
@@MrThisIsMeToo and that is still below Hull speed.
I remember when that was built. in a interview he was asked how much fuel it cost to go that fast and he said something like you need a lot because It will melt your credit cards. LOL it was funny.
"It's a good question, actually."
- Bits introductions
Can you imagine the captain saying, "Sorry fellows, we can only take her to 65 knots today?"
My wallet is not enough.
Couple hundred people get together to buy it, then time-share it over the year.
Gotta work a few more hrs a week lol get that overtime 😆
My boss got a beautiful yacht last year! he told me if I continue to work hard and outdo myself next year......he will be able to get another one 😅😠
Ahhhh yes...John Staluppi’s legend lives on!!! Who recalls Roger Penske’s Detroit Eagle? That’s was an engineering marvel for its time as well.
The pure joy in your face at the end of the video is priceless! You are a good soul.
Extremely cool..congrats to the owner and whoever drives it! Also thanks for posting!
John Staluppi (the owner) was identified by the FBI as a member of the Colombo family back in the early 1990s.
That's insane and majorly impressive at the same time.
I kept waiting to hear it had a foil system - but no - just brute forcing a boat that size to 80 mph is insane. Mad props to the hull designer
I've been sitting here with my jaw dropped at what you've just shared. Wow!
That's more than the power of 2 top fuel drag racers in a luxury cruiser!
Yep, the same owner kinda turned the super yacht world on its head with Octopussy.
Good point , watched that video a few years ago . Had to reinvent virtually everything to get the desired speed but made it . Very impressive .
Brilliant!!
I remember the TV coverage after sea trials. The guy loves Speed 🤠
Don't have to worry about pirates with that boat!!
Having had boats, small ones, you are always no matter how much you love your boat, wanting a bigger one. I can't say that I ever wanted a faster one due to the discomfort and fear of loosing friends overboard.
Your giggle at the end says everything.
The way you giggled at the end said it all.
Your giggling at the end made me laugh :)
I wouldn't be able to resist giving military style orders if it was my vessel, and I'd also want to be able to captain it for the same reason "Helm, all ahead flank!". It would be terrifying but worth it
On my imaginary yacht the diesels would be called impulse engines and the gas turbine the warp core and the speedometer would say warp-factor instead on knots :-)
So nice to watch your videos from the before times.
I have watched the sea trials video of it and the engineers testing the systems..impressive.
I love that little laugh at the end of the video when you state '74 mph...'. I can tell you're thinking "I really REALLY need to get a ride on this thing!!"
Is that the same guy who had Heesen built superyacht Octopussy in the 70s?
Super cool! More vids like this please!
What would the range be at 65 knots? 250 miles?
I’d be very interested to know
You need to consider that 65 knots cruising speed is achievable only in flat calm sea state.
The range at 50+knots is around 600-800 nautical miles.
The range is from one fuel dock to the next. 😂
This thing doesn't sail past too many bunker boats...
There's a video of this vessel underway, it's incredible.
Think I saw that interview, they showed how they costum made furnature, of some sort of foam material to keep the weight down as much as posible.
Love the chuckle at the end 😊
love these snippets.
Wow this was a absolutely excellent excellent video I am a lover of boats and always has been I grew up in the 80s and late 70s I'm familiar with Mr stalupi and some of his yachts. But all your videos are always excellent your dictation and the way you explain things is is extremely or well articulated I enjoy them
That is absolutely amazing! Thanks for the video.
Thank you very much, I always enjoy your videos and look forward to them.
Now this is right up your alley for the need for speed. Fast cars, fast yacht, what more could a seafarer like yourself ask for? Next a supersonic Cessna perhaps! Quite the informative video, thanks 🙏
Insane speed, for a big water craft.
Staluppi- the only guy who says 'Let's put a couple of gas turbines in a superyacht" - and doesn't get the - "you're nuts" look from the shipyard.
Well he owns the shipyard.
@@YachtReport wow, doess he hold interest in Heesman? or a different builder?
About time the Somali pirates had some competition during pursuits 🏴☠️ 🦜
HOLY MOLY! IM IN LOVEEE!
Unbelievably fast!
John always, always, always needs to have the fastest and bigger yacht! 👍
It's a mob thang.
Bet he doesnt have much range.
Great video. Love these quick ones.
That sounds like great fun.
Brilliant video as normal. Thank you
By "spin out" I'd think he meant more along the terms of "blow the props," surely, right? Spinning out is when the transom breaks loose in a turn and comes around before the bow, not when a PWC gets air like your example.
@@marvindebot3264 That's crazy! Thanks for replying. I wouldn't have thought people would build something like this without knowing more than that about the CG on paper. I guess that's progress though! Good for them.
He said in the interview it would spin out to the left or right.
Wow, Now How Cool is That? You can outrun Pirates and pull a couple skiers no problems! That's my kind of Vessel!!
I like you giggle at the end. lol
That's insane. It must be a floating fuel tank with a few hammocks and a beer fridge.
You shouldn't be able to hear the engines over the sound of the fuel pumps. 😮
You loved doing that story didn’t you 😎👏🏻⚓️💨 moral of the story “ when you’re got the cash 💵 and the need for speed nothing is impossible to achieve, super nice video 👍🏻
You are fab, love your little giggle at the end, just thinking how fast that yacht is!
Spinning out makes sense when you think of how much forward force is applied to the rear, with respects to how much water and wind resistance there is in the front. Makes it hydrodynamically unstable at high speeds
The best looking fast super yacht is definitely Mangusta 165 (Serenity). Such beautiful clean lines and top speed of around 40 knots, if I had the money, would definitely be my choice!
If I had a boat this fast it would need some serious Bond gadgets onboard including one or two lovely ladies.
If you can buy that yacht the women come factory installed lol
You and your buddies are cruising at 65 knots, just showing off a little bit. You look over and see this sub periscope looking at you, keeping pace with you, then suddenly it accelerates and leave you behind as it goes back to the deep.
That rich guy has a sense of humor.
I'm surprised the physics of that even works.
Brilliant.
You make great videos.. thanks.
he built the Heesen octopussy which was the original fastest superyacht in the world. its for sale at the moment with slower engine configuration.
Fuel was already more expensive in Europe than here in the USA, so it boggles the mind how much even a day sail might cost in fuel today.
My boss bought a beautiful yacht last year! He said if I continue to work hard strive for greatness and outdo myself next year.... he can buy another one! 😂😅😡
Going past sports fishing boats toasting them with a martini. Classic.
Why ? ...
You make the best videos. Factual, Informative, Entertaining & delivered with obvious Passion !! Stay Safe & Stay True to your Art !!
-Yea eSysman
As a sport fisher, I’d love to see this guy fly by with a martini 🤣
Ludicrous Speed, GO!!!
That's crazy fast on the water. I imagine you'd have to do those speeds on glass-like water, or you'd wind up airborne with the screws out of the water, and a couple very expensive blown engines!
I was on a boat that skipped over a couple swells coming out of the lea of an island, and blew a V-12, as a squall had gone over us. That made for a long trip home in some nasty seas.
Stay safe out there!
I remember seeing a video of a yacht going really fast. They were on the bridge and had it up to really high speed but had a hard time with it and never got to full throttle. May have been this one. I'm surprised they didn't use turbines like coast guard cutters for open ocean.
Maybe they should try a twin hull cat and see if that makes a difference.
That's just bonkers 😂
Thank you for sharing your views of those gorgeous yacht.
Well, yes, the many yachts.
Wonder if he will ever put a turbine engine in a super yacht?
There's a very good documentary about what it took to design and build the yacht, and how only one builder believed in the project.
Awesome at like 14ft./gal.
Can you imagine the look on the guys face in a Viking doing about 35mph and this super yacht blows by him as he screams " do you have any Grey poupon " 🤣🤣🤣
I saw that interview n the series on the build...amazing
I rode on a 125 mph boat before that would do a 30 plus rooster tail on lake Murray. The professors who invited fraternity and sority kicked me out because I kelp riding on the boat when thay told me to quit. Some random dude saw the party and I waved him down for ride. Those professors were a holes, but it was worth it ,riding two feet off the water line that fast. Do more of these type videos. That was cool.
As an engineer, im in love ❤️
Have you ever seen "Ermis 2"? This super yacht was built in New Zealand, is 38m long and has a top speed of 58 knots (66mph) and a cruising speed of 45 knots (51mph)
Brilliant. Hydra Foil perhaps as well....
+1. .. The 992 GT3 of Super Yachts ....
Hopefully he has a few 20mm HS 404 on deck for those runs down the Somalian coast
Bluebird: 276.33 mph (444.71 km/h) Water Bluebird K7 Lake Dumbleyung 31 December 1964
YES! I like FAST!
As he said in his video, "it melts credit card(s) to run it for half an hour at this speed"
I've just watched a documentary on the building of his first yacht Octopussy. I thought that speed was impressive, but this is just wow
Does he have supertanker fueling docks set up every 1000 miles?
It would only make it half way at that distance!!! Wide open, it has less than 500 miles range, according to some estimated figures.
I remember the documentary one this vessel.all the furniture is made from a light weight honey comb material.
Could you extend and reinforce the rear and put 5 or 6 huge outboard motors on it and have it go fast?
Quite nippy for about 30nm until it’s time to find the fuel dock 😂
I wonder why they dont use 'wing in ground effect' wings to increase speed or hydrofoils. would make sense if they want to go faster... maybe its cost prohibitive? So much weight on foils? But the bigger the item the better 'wing in ground effect' works.
There is a Mediterranean ferry service that uses hydro foils and they many haul semis full of food for the island so yeah it works. Science channel just had a show on it in 2020.
If the boat spun out during sea trials, obviously you need to move the engines forward to rebalance the weight and have another go at it!!!
How large a trim tabs are we throwin’ on this thing!? 😂
My mate reckons the yacht he works on is one of the fastest in the Med, M Y Sussurro top speed 36 knots powered by 2 V12 Paxman engines and 2 turbines, I have been in the engine room a few times, its impressive.
Was he onboard during the fire?
@@YachtReport No, he was at home and was woken in the early hours to get down to the marina ASAP, he is chief engineer, he went on the yacht but pompiers? (firemen) ordered them get off but then let them back on to move the yacht out, he said they pumped water on to the fire for 11? hours until the yacht sank.
That thing needs to have foils fitted.... like a Boeing 929 Jetfoil
