This was so interesting, I always thought rearranging their cage was fun for them, because when I put them back in the cage they're running around checking everything out. Now I feel bad because I have been causing them stress.
No judgement - it's a very common misconception that I used to share. But the research is there, and the more I learn about rat behaviour and its drivers, the more obvious it becomes that stress would be the likely result of disrupting their environment so much. Newness is fun for them when it's drip-fed with time to process and enjoy. But there is always going to be safety in what is predictable. Don't feel bad though as you were always just doing your best and trying to make them happy.
