    I bought this and dedicated time and energy to learn programming. Pretty solid for $90. I’m going to get another hotspot to dedicate to DMR since I like this radio so much.

      That's great to hear, @thomashardy9994. DMR clicks with some people, others not so much. This radio just does its thing with no frills and a price tag that won't break the bank.

    Hi,always liked your reviews,very honest and we’ll balanced.I’m completely new to DMR and my RTS3 will be delivered to tomorrow.The none GPS version is priced under £100 with free delivery so it’s an easy decision.I look forward to your deeper review 😊

      Thanks for the kind words Simon. DMR has a steep learning curve. I've completed all my work on this HT, now just have to put the videos together. My opinion remains the same; great low cost HT to get into DMR.

      @@RatishRam I don't own the specific radio you mention, but I do own the AnyTone 878. While the RT3S is a good radio, the 878 would be my choice hands down. More widely know, distributed, used radio with a much larger knowledge base available for others to learn from / use.

    Seems to be a variant of the TYT MD-380 series. A solid HT for the price. I use it bicycle mobile with the stub which works amazingly well considering the compromise. Good review. 73

      It's not a variant of the MD-UV380 - it is an MD-UV380 with a different badge on the front. The MD-UV390 is also the same radio but in an IP67 rated case.

    First off. Thank you so much for the honest review. I just ordered my RT3S and cant wait. I dont think there are any DMR repeaters near me and i dont have home internet. I have a hotspot on my phone. Any recommendations for how to set up a DMR hotspot through my phone hotspot?

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  Рік тому

      Joshua, thanks for watching and commenting. Each hotspot manufacturer may have instructions a little different on how to connect their hotspot to your phone; so I would recommend being sure you buy one that has good instructions. I use a Bridgecom Skybridge. It stays at home connect to house wifi. If I take is on the road, I have to Google to get instructions to connect to my phone, because I just can't remember.

    I just preordered the new blue tooth version fx-4cr transceiver. It’s for my get home/survival pack kit. Granted my ic705 is end all be all but I do not want to put it (705) in my survival pack unless I want a 80lb pack. FYI I’m not 19 years old anymore. I now have a 40 year old back. LoL

      I am Soooooo jealous. I went to his website numerous times and debated with myself whether I should or shouldn't make the purchase--he closed the presale before I could make the right decision and get it on order. Please keep me updated once you get it. The FX-4CR is the PERFECT size for what I want to do, and I'd like to know if you are happy with it.

      It’s going in my survival pack. And I can hook it up to my tablet as well for js8 and winlink.
      Granted nothing will beat my ic705 como bag. But……
      It’s smaller and can go in my other bags anywhere. Along with your new favorite portable hf antenna. ;)

    The Amazon link you posted says 10K contacts not 100K, the Retevis website doesn't seem to provide this info in the specs. Can you confirm the Amazon post is wrong and the 100K you state in the video is right?

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for asking Deirdre. The answer is, if you use the "record" function you have 10,000, if you do not use the "record" function it is 100,000. I have confirmed this directly with the Retevis contact who asked me to review the HT.
      I will be sure to cover this in my full review.

    • @mikesanders6351
      @mikesanders6351 Рік тому

      @@HOAHamRadio Be aware that "Contacts" are not the same as "DMR IDs" - with the CSV version of firmware, as opposed to the REC (record) version, around 120,000 DMR IDs and their associated data can be loaded in the radio, but the number of Contacts does not change.
      Contacts are entered by the user via the CPS, DMR IDs are downloaded from various sources on the internet and loaded to the radio in a separate process to writing the code plug to the radio.

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  Рік тому

      @@mikesanders6351 Correct, DMR ID's and Contacts are two separate data sets, and the ID's are a DMR database upload. Now having multiple DMR radios I've found each CPS is a bit different, but in the end, they are all inter-dependent data tables.

    • @w4mkh
      @w4mkh 2 роки тому +1

      @@HOAHamRadio thanks. I have a GD-77 and the problem with these cheaper DMR radios is that you pretty much have to write your own code plug from scratch. Ask around your area and see if there is a code plug for the Retvis. For newbies it is a lot easier to just import a workin code plug. That is why I asked.

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  Рік тому

      Ross13ful, yes, you can just listen. You will need a DMR id #, and you have to be a licensed ham to get that.

    • @Ross13ful
      @Ross13ful Рік тому +1

      @@HOAHamRadio ok so just to listen to dmr I need a license

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  Рік тому +1

      To listen to DMR you need to key up the radio on a TalkGroup. To be "let" into the TalkGroup, it will scan for your DMR ID. When you apply for your DMR ID they will ask for your callsign. To get your callsign, you need to pass your Technician test for amateur radio.
      Simple answer, yes.
      Obviously, you can listen to analog ham bands all day long without a license. But you probably already knew that.
