Been there done that. We love to hear the sound of a train off in the distance but could never live any where near the tracks. People say that you get used to it but I'm not sure how.
Lived 1 to 3 miles form SP and UP tracks most my life. Love the chimes at night of the Amtracks and it's easy to tell if they are running late. Barstow rail-yard had a rhythmic thing going on. Great to see it in action.
I have the Run8 Simulation that I run with several friends and THIS video is just SO comfortable to watch considering that i can recognize so much of the yard from the Sim. VERY interesting video !! Thanks.
The action going on and the careful editing you used to represent this make this video simply awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to capture all this activity. It's simply gorgeous to watch.
Wow ... I'm amazed at the size of this work. It deserves to be digitized for the Steam Train Simulator, with at least 50 tasks of maneuvers of loading, unloading, assembly of composition for express trips, etc. Congrats on the video.
nice vantage points. been there a couple time since last august, a friend of mine live at the veterans home in Barstow, been railfaning at the Harvey house.
Thanks for your video from Barstow yard it's exactly it. Interesting would be to map more terminals in the USA. It's very interesting to watch work in terminals rare. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for posting this tasteful and visually arresting look two of my favorite things: trains and the desert. The nat sound is most appreciated. You've taken something that could have been merely informative and turned it into something approaching art. Subbed.
+Been about 10 years for me can,t aford to go because on fixed income now but thanks to you my friend i can still enjoy watching the trains comeing and going only place where i can see trains now are west springfeald and palmer Ma. I live in Ct.
That is such a nice thing to say and we are glad that you can get enjoyment out of the videos. It makes the trips out to get the footage that much more worthwhile to know that others can take pleasure in watching them! We wish you the best!
Tremendous panoramic view. It really gives you a nice perspective on the yard operations. This must be quite a climb to get to the top where you were filming. Thank you for sharing it.
I always am excited when you post a new video. This one is very special. I can count on you to keep rail fanning fresh. Pentrex and others have nothing on you! Keep up the great work. It will pay-off one day I assure you.
Great shots of the humps. It is such an amazing concept. You just need a lot of technology and gravity. Think about the work that went into building trains before it was all computer based.
Very enjoyable!! Watching this, as an N-scale BNSF model railroader, I try to image how room it would take at 1:160 to recreate this yard. 🤯. I will watch again (new subscriber). 👍
I don't normally watch videos like this for long, but caught myself almost in a trance watching. Great editing and thanks for hiking up there! Such a neat view of the yard. I only ever stop on US58 on the west end and watch the Mojave/Cajon trains, would love to go up that mountain and watch Needles come in!
I live about an hour away and I’ve been through to see trains, and I’ve been through on Amtrak, but I’ve never seen any angles like this! I’m dying to see when the Wabtec Electric loco comes through in a test BNSF consist this year
Very well done. Very interesting and professional . Maybe the best video I have seen. Thanks for the time and effort that was obviously put into the making. (Very Relaxing) :)
This action was very well shot! An idea for future video's would be to go back to that hill top perch and , if you can, set up for a day long time-laps session. I think this could be simply amazing, this is very well done as it is, keep up the good work and thanks for posting!
Yes we are considering going back up sometime soon. It is an area that we probably would avoid because of snakes at this time of year but definitely are considering it.
Great footage! A fun place to watch yard operations, but the hump and that constant squealing can be a bit annoying! :-) All day and all night it goes on.
Wow, meditative! Brings back memories of my training on BNSF and CSX. You picked some scenic and informative observation points. What video gear did you use? Well done!
Hi Milton- I assume that you are referring to the cars coming down from the hump. That is the way that they classify the rail cars in Barstow and in other hump yards. The cars are pushed up to the crest of the hump and then uncoupled. As they roll down hill, there are retarders that control their speed and their path into the appropriate track is lined up. That way they coast down to a stop on the track that represents the train that they will be leaving on. As far as UP, yes the UP has for at least 100 years had trackage rights on the Santa Fe and now BNSF to go from Yermo/Daggett down to West Riverside, CA via Cajon Pass.
The "HUMP" is a small elevation or hill. An incoming train is pushed up this hill and at the top the cars are decoupled. each car has a unique identifier which is read by a scanner. the identifier says where the car needs to go, how heavy it is, and which train is being made up in the yard and which track that includes that car. the rest of the yard is "downhill" from the hump, so gravity takes the car and sends it down the track. there are "retarders" built into the tracks which squeeze the wheels of the cars and control the speed of each car so they don't go too fast. the scanners at each switch operate the switches according to the computer system, to direct that car through each switch in turn and onto the correct track for that consist. When all cars in the train (called a "consist") are lined up and coupled together, the power units are assigned according to the needs of the consist and the train is ready to be dispatched, and off they go on the next leg of their journey.
Are you shooting this from the top of "B" hill? I haven't been able to see a way up there that doesn't look like trespassing. Can you give me a hint? thanks
I do not know exactly what I could say here except, thank you very much for this gigantic insight. This width ...... wooow really a huge thank you! Now I wrap myself in respectful silence and listen to the sounds !!! PS: is as much going on at night as it is during the day?
Hi Eddie- this yard is non-stop 24/7. It is the primary entry point for BNSF freight traffic into the LA Basin. Consequently, most if not all freight cars are classified at Barstow and then move to the LA Basin as BAR trains. Any actual freight train (i.e. not intermodal or auto rack) that you see on anyone's videos from Cajon Pass is a BAR train moving from the classification yard in Barstow to different destinations in SoCal including San Diego (BARDGO), Los Angeles (BARLAC), and Fontana (BARKAI). These trains have to be put together and the reverse trains taken apart at BAR. Barstow also handles many trains from NorCal as well as Washington State including the BARRIC (Barstow to Richmond), BARBAK (Barstow to Bakersfield), and the BARPAS (Barstow to Pasco, WA). Consequently, the yard is always hopping. Thanks for watching!
We haven't had trains in our local area since 2000. The rails were removed, and we now have 300 kms of atv trails. We love it, and we ride often.
The singing and whistling of the rails echoing in the background is really cool.
This is letting me relive my old run from Needles to Barstow! Awesome 1973 to 2010
A lovely way to enjoy a lazy morning in retirement ! Thanks.
A cow/calf unit AND a cabless B unit! Awesome!!
Thanks- definitely quite the operation up there!
One of the worst nights sleep ever, at a motel near this yard on our way to Grand Canyon as a kid. Thanks for the birds-eye view.
Been there done that. We love to hear the sound of a train off in the distance but could never live any where near the tracks. People say that you get used to it but I'm not sure how.

Hi. This is the best video I have seen showing the hump shunting. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much!!

Thank you Raphael! It's hard to go wrong when there is so much going on down there.
I keep a window looping on your "All the Best!" playlist at work. I personally would suggest that video is totally worth being on your Best playlist!
Point well taken. Thanks Raphael!
Greetings from Perth.Really enjoyed this train spotting. You certainly have very long trains over there!! Thanks again 😀
Wow ... I'm amazed at the size of this work. It deserves to be digitized for the Steam Train Simulator, with at least 50 tasks of maneuvers of loading, unloading, assembly of composition for express trips, etc. Congrats on the video.
Thanks Antonio- 24/7, 365 days a year up there. Kind of amazing how much traffic goes through the yard.
This view is just breath taking, it'd be cool to see it like that in person
nice vantage points. been there a couple time since last august, a friend of mine live at the veterans home in Barstow, been railfaning at the Harvey house.
Thanks for watching Rodd!
Nice video train! Super video!

Reminds me of Selkirk yard in Selkirk New York just below Albany N York I don,t know your handel but sure do thank you.
Yes, Selkirk was a great yard but I assume that since the hump has been shut down it is a shadow of what it was.
+Been about 10 years for me can,t aford to go because on fixed income now but thanks to you my friend i can still enjoy watching the trains comeing and going only place where i can see trains now are west springfeald and palmer Ma. I live in Ct.

You need to do a video on the east coast railroad. I work for csx transportation in Cincinnati at its Queens gate yard. Love railroading
Very enjoyable. Subscribed!
Great Video thank you so much
Thank you Dustin!
Tremendous panoramic view. It really gives you a nice perspective on the yard operations. This must be quite a climb to get to the top where you were filming. Thank you for sharing it.

Thank you Tyler! It pays off by sharing our hobby with others.
Great shots of the humps. It is such an amazing concept. You just need a lot of technology and gravity. Think about the work that went into building trains before it was all computer based.
It's crazy seeing how massively long these double stack trains can be zoomed out...
Awesome, beautifully shot video!
Thank you!
Big yard man like the noise
Top quality video, most fun I ever had in Barstow!

Thanks! There was almost too much to take video since it was so busy.
This action was very well shot! An idea for future video's would be to go back to that hill top perch and , if you can, set up for a day long time-laps session. I think this could be simply amazing, this is very well done as it is, keep up the good work and thanks for posting!

Excelente!!
Great video, thanks !!
Incredible video, you must have a pretty good zoom on your camera for it to be so high quality from so far away!
Increíble, saludos desde chile
I applied for a position with BNSF at Barstow in 2010, interviewed but was not hired. 42 years old at the time. :(
Can you do more Barstow plz👍
Check out the ex BN and Santa Fe units painted in BNSF's new swoosh livery
Great footage! A fun place to watch yard operations, but the hump and that constant squealing can be a bit annoying! :-) All day and all night it goes on.
That train crew is cleaning the engines windows and lights before departing.
Mega cool video i like it
Thanks Marco!
this is the 3de time watching this video... its good
55:30-Sounds like someone must have been dissatisfied with the unfolding of the days events.
That's just Barstow being Barstow lol
Wow, meditative! Brings back memories of my training on BNSF and CSX.
You picked some scenic and informative observation points.
What video gear did you use?
Well done!
41:48 Silver with red warbonnet scheme.
I feel like a kid again playing with toys train's from Gabrielle Rivas from Roslyn heights ny
REALLY COOL VIDEO!!! I have a couple questions, though:
-Why do the railcars coast by themselves?
-Does the UP have trackage rights on the line?
Hi Milton- I assume that you are referring to the cars coming down from the hump. That is the way that they classify the rail cars in Barstow and in other hump yards. The cars are pushed up to the crest of the hump and then uncoupled. As they roll down hill, there are retarders that control their speed and their path into the appropriate track is lined up. How many tracks comprise the hump bowl? Love looking at it from this vantage point. Excellent shots.
Thanks Mark. I unfortunately don't know the track layout.
Barstow has 15 classification tracks, grouped in 3 balloons of 5 tracks each.
Are you shooting this from the top of "B" hill? I haven't been able to see a way up there that doesn't look like trespassing. Can you give me a hint? thanks
What happened to a RailfanRewind this year? This a great video by the way! I love seeing yard action!
Thanks for asking. I have been busy with school but it is finished and just needs to be exported. Look for it soon!
Which way is west and which is east? Trying to figure out what train is going where
In midle of nowhere, desert. Huge econony
I do not know exactly what I could say here except, thank you very much for this gigantic insight. This width ...... wooow really a huge thank you! Now I wrap myself in respectful silence and listen to the sounds !!! PS: is as much going on at night as it is during the day?

Nice, when does this game come out :) JK looks amazing, great footage!!
Awesome video. FIRST!
Glad that you enjoyed it.
You're welcome. I uploaded my first video today.
Very nice video indeed! Liked the Executive MAC in the consist!
Thanks up here we've seen alot more lately.
Muy bueno.
