Not only them, but we had books a million, Dalton’s book store and Waldron’s books! Gaylord’s, Barker’s, TG&Y, S.S. Cresage, department stores and 5&dimes! Ohhh, how I miss those days!!!
I loved Borders books. I bought hundreds of books over the years. I went to book signings, etc. My husband and I went to several Border stores closing sales several times. We hated to see Borders books go. I still think about it with nostalgia.

My wife and I very rarely go to any of the big national stores. We always shop first at mom & pop stores & regional chains. Very rarely do we go to Walmart or other multibillion $ chains. Same with restaurants.

There used to be a Woolworths in a mall near me. It was an awesome place and had good deals on Nintendo games. Last time I was at the mall about 10 years ago I found a Woolworths shopping cart down one of the end hallways. It was closed for years at that point.
I used to buy my Trixie Belden mysteries at Woolworth. That of course was in the 1960’s. Then a Walden bookstore opened near me and I spent many hours and much money there. Then it was on to Borders Books which was a home away from home. Then Barnes and Noble. As a lifelong reader all of these stores were a big part of my life. Now I have a Barnes and Noble Nook and love the fact I can just order another book when I have finished the book I was reading. Sometimes it would be 11PM 12:30 pm 2am.. One of the advantages to reading books on Nook is that at 72 I can choose a comfortable and larger font for my old eyes! I have years of happy memories in bookstores. And I also spent 6 years working at the town next to us library . It was like a dream come true😊

Growing up, my favorite store was Ben Franklin's. Other than groceries & automotive, they had just about everthing you needed. As a kid, you could go in and find a Mother's Day present, a Father's Day present, a birthday present, or a Chtistnas present, that you could afford! It was wonderful! 😊 As an adult, I miss Dayton's in downtown Mpls. the most.
I worked at Lechmere(pronounced Leechmere) in 1972 and part of 1973. My son worked at the same Lechmere in the mid 1990’s. He was working there when they closed.

Basically he realized that making and having to get more and more money, he had no time for anything else. And he realized it when he was dying of cancer. He could not get the missed times back. The angels came for him and he realized there was nothing he could do. So sad for him and the others in his "pay range" who just laughed when they heard his words. Spend time on family, friends, a "normal" life if it's still possible.

What's tragic is that many of these stores fell because of bad management. Ames was my favorite but there were no personnel to help when many items were not priced. You forgot Zodys. That was a good store too.

Remember the Sears and Monkey Wards Christmas catalogs? Then there was the Speigels catalog. Anyone remember Speigels? The internet and online shopping has spoiled these experiences for everyone! Awhile back, I actually acquired a copy of a Speigal catalog. Apparently, they're still in print, but it was soooo skinny! Not much in it.
Murphy's was a store that shut down when i was really little and replaced with a dollar general after sitting empty for quite awhile, my mom loved it though and with these pictures i can see why.
Ames wasn't considered a department store, it was considered an outlet/bargain outlet/discounter first of its kind in our area and it was the anchor store of the small mall in town. it was also degraded/derogatorily called "China Outlet" or "Big China Outlet" as it was the first store in the area with a lot of products that were marked as made in china or taiwan/r.o.c. or vietnam or other asian countries instead of made in america/usa or england or france or germany or something. didnt know Ames bought Hills, Hills was a store my dad made trips 30-60 minutes away two or three times a year to shop at as a destination
My Store 880, Bradlees was the first in the chain, my life time job, with a union and a pension, medical and dental. You don't see that today!. Stores in CT that closed rapidly with the mass influx of Walmart. Bradlees, Caldor's, Two Guys, Orbits.
Walmart & Target took over just bcoz they’re giants , it’s an understatement to say for better prices ! Their prices are ridiculous, can’t ever get someone to help you or “ I don’t work in that department!” I personally like to look at my stuff , decide if I want , to order online, not my cup of tea ! People even order cars online , nope I need to test drive ! I would rather walk in to borders , enjoy a book with coffee & some friends , you can’t do that online !

The other checker says “ go to # 1” I grab my stuff & said “ oh shit “ the checker heard me & says “ now now “ I said isn’t there a checker @ # 3 ? Yes , I took my groceries there & she refused to check me out !😡 The checker in # 1 said “ she’s cold & trying to warm up!” Well she can go home & hibernate, if it’s too cold for her , find someone that can take her place !😡 It was only 54 degrees ( Texas ) I hate to see when it snows , she’d better find another job !

The sharper image was fun, but I ever bought anything. Boarders was cool because you could listen to the music before you bought. Well after I was a kid I would love to go to KB Toys and Toys R Us just to see what cool things kids got at the time. I miss shopping in person. Lechmere failed in Tampa Bay Area. Cause they insisted on keeping 9-5 hours closed Sundays against the local malls which were opened 10-9 and on Sundays
never heard of crown books and only vaguely heard of borders as an obscure competitor to barnes and noble and amazon, and even barnes and noble was obscure and didnt have any stores anywhere near where i grew up. after i moved to north carolina they have a really good bookstore here called books a million that seems very similar to the borders that is talked about here. not sure if they are still open though.

Methuen Mall had a Merry Go Round and my freind worked there while l worked at a nursing home and worked as a contract cleaner at IRS Andover. On my day off l used to hang out at the Methuen Mall and buy a few pairs of blue jeans from the Merry Go Round while having lunch with my freind on her break. Good times. 👍😊

76yrs , I wear a size 51/2- 6 shoes, could hit the $1.99 sales a get all the window samples. Penny 's warehouse closed in Milwaukee, still have shoes in the box😅😅😅.
Payless really helped me when they told me I could find shoes in the children's section in equivalent sizes to my size in ladies shoes, if I didn't like the styles or colors in the ladies section. A 7 1/2 in ladies size is the equivalent, fit-wise, of a 5 1/2 in kids' size. I bought shoes in both sections, and they all fit perfectly.

I used to work at Globe discount store before joining the military. Great place to work.
Growing up, my favorite store was Ben Franklin's. Other than groceries & automotive, they had just about everthing you needed. As a kid, you could go in and find a Mother's Day present, a Father's Day present, a birthday present, or a Chtistnas present, that you could afford! It was wonderful! 😊 As an adult, I miss Dayton's in downtown Mpls. the most.
I worked at Lechmere(pronounced Leechmere) in 1972 and part of 1973. My son worked at the same Lechmere in the mid 1990’s. He was working there when they closed.
I can't think of s single modern retailer that does anything to set its stores apart with welcoming ambience, wide selection, and helpful service.
There still are a few. But their numbers are dwindling.

Here's my theory: the top money bananas have developed a thirst for how to take over another planet. As the world gets more and more filthy the rich want out. It won't happen when I'm alive, but not that far in the future, Earth will not be habitable and will be redundant. And the biggest polluters are those who own manufacturing businesses. Have a good trip, Bezos and all his millionaires, billionaires and let us not forget that greediest group, the trillionaires and it goes on and on. Steve Jobs spoke of the limits he suffered because of the drive to make more and more money. He was living proof that no matter how much money you have, it could not make him well again. He missed out on family relationships because he had no time. He missed everyday life because he had no public voice. Basically he realized that making and having to get more and more money, he had no time for anything else. And he realized it when he was dying of cancer. He could not get the missed times back. The angels came for him and he realized there was nothing he could do. So sad for him and the others in his "pay range" who just laughed when they heard his words. Spend time on family, friends, a "normal" life if it's still possible.

Washington, DC's F Street was the heart of flagship stores til the"70"s. At it's peak, Woodward & Lothrop ("Woodies"), Garfinkel's, Raleigh's, Lansburgh's, Hecht Co., L. Frank's, Jelleff's - all were part of childhood memories especially during the holiday season.😢

We had an Ames' in South Lawrence MA! Loved going there with my kids when they were little and shop there. All the things we bought and the toys! Loved Ames. Good times. 👍😊

What's tragic is that many of these stores fell because of bad management.

Remember the Sears and Monkey Wards Christmas catalogs? Then there was the Speigels catalog. Anyone remember Speigels? The internet and online shopping has spoiled these experiences for everyone! Awhile back, I actually acquired a copy of a Speigal catalog. Apparently, they're still in print, but it was soooo skinny! Not much in it.
Murphy's was a store that shut down when i was really little and replaced with a dollar general after sitting empty for quite awhile, my mom loved it though and with these pictures i can see why.
Ames wasn't considered a department store, it was considered an outlet/bargain outlet/discounter first of its kind in our area and it was the anchor store of the small mall in town. it was also degraded/derogatorily called "China Outlet" or "Big China Outlet" as it was the first store in the area with a lot of products that were marked as made in china or taiwan/r.o.c. or vietnam or other asian countries instead of made in america/usa or england or france or germany or something.
didnt know Ames bought Hills, Hills was a store my dad made trips 30-60 minutes away two or three times a year to shop at as a destination

My Store 880, Bradlees was the first in the chain, my life time job, with a union and a pension, medical and dental. You don't see that today!. Stores in CT that closed rapidly with the mass influx of Walmart. Bradlees, Caldor's, Two Guys, Orbits.

Walmart & Target took over just bcoz they’re giants , it’s an understatement to say for better prices ! Their prices are ridiculous, can’t ever get someone to help you or “ I don’t work in that department!” I personally like to look at my stuff , decide if I want , to order online, not my cup of tea ! People even order cars online , nope I need to test drive ! I would rather walk in to borders , enjoy a book with coffee & some friends , you can’t do that online !

I grab my groceries put them on the register , the checker saw me but still took off ! I walk to where she’s at ask her “ aren’t you checking?” Says no go to # 1 , I grab my things go to # 2 accidentally. The other checker says “ go to # 1” I grab my stuff & said “ oh shit “ the checker heard me & says “ now now “ I said isn’t there a checker @ # 3 ? Yes , I took my groceries there & she refused to check me out !😡 The checker in # 1 said “ she’s cold & trying to warm up!” Well she can go home & hibernate, if it’s too cold for her , find someone that can take her place !😡 It was only 54 degrees ( Texas ) I hate to see when it snows , she’d better find another job !

I forgot about Radio Shack! Staff was always so helpful and they carried all kinds of gadgets. Purchased my late husband, who was a musician, a disco ball for his music room as a joke and he loved it!
I remember Pier One Imports. We had one of those in our mall in Carlsbad, CA.
The sharper image was fun, but I ever bought anything. Boarders was cool because you could listen to the music before you bought. Well after I was a kid I would love to go to KB Toys and Toys R Us just to see what cool things kids got at the time. I miss shopping in person. I hate ordering online and not getting to try things on or check the quality.

Borders Books, drinking Joe Mugs Coffee in Grapevine Mills-TX, OMG miss K-Bee Toys for Christmas-we came out with bags full at decent prices, Steve & Barrys was the best at $7.98 for anything when it opened (the best Heavy sweatshirts ever) and for sure Toys r Us. Too many favorites gone forever!
Lechmere failed in Tampa Bay Area. Cause they insisted on keeping 9-5 hours closed Sundays against the local malls which were opened 10-9 and on Sundays

never heard of crown books and only vaguely heard of borders as an obscure competitor to barnes and noble and amazon, and even barnes and noble was obscure and didnt have any stores anywhere near where i grew up.
after i moved to north carolina they have a really good bookstore here called books a million that seems very similar to the borders that is talked about here. not sure if they are still open though.
Borders sound so much like Barne's Nobles. It was a brand new store here in Tracy, at the mall, & didn't last long at all. Now it's a sports store.
To me Barn's Noble was better. I even liked Hasting better than Borders.
We had both but borders was way better. I miss borders.

I'm a Medicare card-carrying senior citizen. I've not heard of any of these places except for Borders, Crown Books, Spencers and KB Toys.
I'm 70 and I've been to many. Lots of chains have closed. Not all are national chains. Doesn't mean they didn't exist.
I loved to go to Borders for coffee. ☕️
When Ames was going out of business, I bought a grandfather clock from them about 20 years ago. I still have it.

Methuen Mall had a Merry Go Round and my freind worked there while l worked at a nursing home and worked as a contract cleaner at IRS Andover. On my day off l used to hang out at the Methuen Mall and buy a few pairs of blue jeans from the Merry Go Round while having lunch with my freind on her break. Good times. 👍😊

We used to have a small store called Gibson's that was great. WM took it down. I never go into walmart if I can help it. Maybe once a year, Can't stand that place.

76yrs , I wear a size 51/2- 6 shoes, could hit the $1.99 sales a get all the window samples. Penny 's warehouse closed in Milwaukee, still have shoes in the box😅😅😅.
Payless really helped me when they told me I could find shoes in the children's section in equivalent sizes to my size in ladies shoes, if I didn't like the styles or colors in the ladies section. A 7 1/2 in ladies size is the equivalent, fit-wise, of a 5 1/2 in kids' size. I bought shoes in both sections, and they all fit perfectly.
