Thank you to MurphysMagic for sending me an early review copy of REPO. It's a beautiful product, trick, method and piece of magic. What do YOU think of it?
@@jamierayner9777 He's got liquefy which is available everywhere, and then liquid spectrum which is coming out through Ellusionist. I was referring to the fact that you could do something like open with Repo, and then go on to an extended sequence using liquefy and liquid spectrum together. Easy and crazy cool 7-10 min little act right there.
@@jamierayner9777 Liquefy (everywhere) and liquid spectrum (Ellusionist preorder). I'm guessing at least 7 mins worth of material with those and Repo together. Pretty cool.
One question, if you were forced to choose between liquefy and repo, which would you perform, ?that would look more magical, as they both have the same angle issues, thanks.
I would choose Repo because Liquify isn’t an actual routine. It’s just an interesting magical moment. Repo is an actual magic trick and routine though.
Thanks for an incredibly thorough and honest review. I ordered this sight unsees, trusting Tobias' track record. I looks like another winner, and one I will use a lot!
Scott would you perform this personally with a pattern/ story or would you prefer in silent pantomime type ? For me it looks more artistic if there are no words but more intriguing with a story. What are your thoughts?
I perform it with a story. For me storytelling is more important than the tricks themselves. The performance on my events social media was to music and so added a voiceover though. Words can add so much power to our magic.
@@EverythingMagicPro99thanks! Here are some other oddly specific couple of questions… 1. could I use a red string instead of a chain (I suspect the answer is no because it’s not magnetic), and 2. could the order of events go: first make a chain/string appear, then make a key appear on the chain, then make the chain disappear and be left with just a key?
Correct, you cannot use string with this method. You can produce chain - produce key - vanish chain though. Why I love this is because you can switch the order of almost any part. Start with the key or chain or nothing. It’s very flexible in the sequence. The method can be used with anything that’s small and magnetic. A magnetic tic-tac or a safety pin and a chain or any kind of dolls house prop like a mini loaf of bread. Creative people will get the most out of Repo.
Could be mistaken for that, yes. The noise is like the same as a click of two magnets hitting each other. It doesn’t always happen and with practice you can do a lot to prevent it from happening most of the time. There is always a possibility of a loud click though. It’s only a problem in a very quiet performance. With people chatting, cars, music etc…it won’t be a problem.
Great review, you did mention it’s a gimmick that might not break easily but in general, can the gimmick be carried in a wallet as an edc without breaking? Most of the tricks I carry are either in my wallet or on my keys as a hobbyist so would it work out?
Yes, it’s easily portable. The “gimmick” is quite small at 1-2cm. I think you could carry it in your wallet or attached to your keys without much worry of it breaking. Everything in Repo is magnetic, so if you have a magnetic closure key holder you could simply attach it to that or pop the tyvek envelope (included) in your wallet with the gimmick, chain and key.
The reasons for it not being an EDC are: - the tights angles - possibilities of noise - possibility of gimmick falling off if hands are too wet/sweaty It’s a great trick but I’d rather carry something I can use any time anywhere over something I can only use in very specific situations.
@ I can understand but for me personally for one on one magic except for noise no other problems ig, one last doubt, does this have anything to do with skin tone like tt? Just to understand if it camouflages good with my skin tone
@vengeanceXO yes, it has a skin tone to it. It shouldn’t matter as if they see the skin tone gimmick they’ll see the key/chain but the gimmick is a lighter skin colour. If you have darker skin you can easily paint it or even use a marker pen to match it to your skin.
Only on small stages (in my opinion) like the Magic Castle stage. People need to be within 10ft to properly enjoy it as the chain is very thin and the key is quite small. It could be projected on a screen but I wouldn’t perform it on stage. I probably wouldn’t perform it in parlour either. It’s possible though.
Hi scott , many thanks for amazing review,I love that your totally honest, I already have liquefy, where you have to be directly in front of spectators , I don't think I want another angle issue to worry about, I'll think this through, thanks.
Most welcome. Take your time to consider a purchase. Although it’s a great effect, £50 is a lot of money when you won’t be able to perform everywhere and anywhere. What is taught on the instructions is well worth £50 though, even with the limitations on angles.
Great review. In trailers and demos when he puts the key back on it looks like a smaller key. Is that true? It looked obvious but I hope I’m wrong. I just don’t know what the spec sees. Thanks!
Exactly. It also depends on where you perform it. In some places it’s very easy to perform. In terms of difficulty I think it is quite easy to perform. There is no difficult sleight of hand. The gimmick does almost everything for you.
To me, the method sticks out like a sore thumb (pun intended). I perform mainly surrounded, so right off the bat, this trick is not a good fit for me. That being said & done, there are a few magical moments with this effect.
I just saw Craig Petty perform this gem on his channel and am hooked. However, I would like to know about the 'get ready' and angle situation. In his performance he sits at the table showing his one hand empty the whole time until the chain drops off of it. However, the hand position is very unnatural to me. So I am worried that whether I need to get out of the spectator's sight first (for my 'get ready') and go back to that person in some sort of awkward hand position when I perform it in the real world. That information is holding me back from purchasing it. Thanks!
There are setups taught on the instructions where you get ready in front of your audience, like using the red envelope included. The hand position can be a bit unnatural but that just comes down to practice. As with any trick, you get put what you put in to it. Watch Tobias’ performances and look at his hand positions. Looks quite natural to me.
From your perspective the most a person can get away with in the real world (in my opinion) is 90 degrees but 45 degrees or less is preferred. With audience at 90 degrees it’s still possible to easily flash. Repo works best for small groups of people or to someone directly. The Ad copy says “perfect for close-up, but can even translate to parlor or stage” - I think Pinocchio wrote that 🤥 Only if it’s projected on a big screen but that would make every close-up trick a parkour/stage effect 😂
For Strolling forget it ! Only good for social media If your a worker how you goin to use this ? Not for me but I am sure others will enjoy it ! Thanks for the great review you saved me some money !
Yes, it’s not much of a workers effect. Special in certain situations but not great in walkaround scenarios. Very fun concept to learn and practice though.
It's junk. It's obvious the key is just sticking to the chain. Unless you're doing it from 10 feet away, and you quickly show the key, it's not going to fool anyone.
I agree with you. It looks like there's a chain attached to one side of the key. I'm a little worried as a close-up magician, but.. I think we can move on as if the key is stuck on the line for sure.
Love Tobias, but realistically, if you are professional magician doing walkaround or table magic you need material that is virtually angle proof. You never know who is watching and from where. If someone you didn't know was watching sees something there is a good chance they will ruin if for the group watching. Drunken wedding guests are the worst for that type of thing.
Yes, this is not a “worker”. It could be performed at a wedding or event but not easily or frequently. That’s why I say it’s not an EDC for me. It’s a really interesting trick to learn and is very magical in the right situations, but not realistic as a worker.
You can see the gimmick when he is looking at the box... As a sharp eyed magician, I suspected that is how this gimmick may look. Seeing it verified my theory.
I also thought it odd that the front of the boxes don’t have creators names on. If they continue down this route it would be nice to add some colour to the boxes instead of all clinical white.
@pasteboard5269 I actually didn’t think about the packaging. Although the key looks nothing like the actual key, the actual key is shown in all of the footage and trailers. It’s obvious (to me) the kind of key people will receive. I do disagree with you about it being practical though. It IS practical if performed in the right situations. In a cafe, at a dinner table, in a bar (to a group of 2 or 3)…I think it’s practical and really magical. It’s just whether the right conditions for the trick suit people’s performance space.
@@EverythingMagicPro99 I agree the trailers make it obvious I just wonder why they do such things maybe just a marketing ploy. Fair enough about the practicality I just mean in terms of it's scope perfomance wise. I do agree it's a magical effect though, he is very clever.
It depends what you consider practical. Tobias performs his creations at conventions and other real life situations. They just tend to require a lot of practice and effort than tricks that are considerably easier. Most of his tricks are difficult to perform, but I wouldn’t necessarily say they are not practical effects.
