    The Sharp EL-1197 PIII Printing Calculator. It has a vacuum-fluorescent display, and it's HUGE! As compared to the vintage Canon printing calculator I showed at xjoe81x's place, this one is much newer and prints much faster.
    This has all the features you'd never expect in a calculator, most of which will largely go unused. If you're counting currency, or are an accountant, a device like this will be very useful.
    This calculator is very overbuilt, it's practically a tank, and will withstand many years of heavy pounding on those keys.

    [up arrow] means always round UP to the nearest decimal point. [down arrow] means always round DOWN to the nearest decimal point. 5/4 means 5 and up round up, 4 and below round down. GT means total including tax, RATE SET means to set the % of tax.

      +Harley Badger It has an instruction manual, they cram every single function onto a piece of paper about the size of a microfiche if you remember those!

    Nice calculator. I used one along these lines when I took accounting in high school many eons ago. Of course back then they were probably made in Japan if not the USA. The printing I believe work kind of like a date stamp where you turn a thumb wheel to move a small belt with numbers on it to set the date only the calculator has probably 12 or more small belts, one for each digit whereas xjoe81x had 1 belt and could only print one digit at a time. I had a small one that I had in college that got lost in a box for probably 15-20 years. When I tried to use it after all that time the printing belts had dried/rotted out and all the numbers flew off it.

      +tallboyyyy That all sounds about right. This one is an absolute beast. I remember I bought some rubber stamps several years ago, they had something like a 10 year spread, and they're all out of date now. Know when they were used? When I first got them, once to test them out.
      But I do remember a stamp as such years ago that all the numbers were flying off of because it was so old.

    I'm looking for how to change a twin spool calculator ribbon on a Sharp COMPET QS-2760H, and I'm not finding a video on youtube. The ribbon is on the bottom, rather than the top. I have the manual but cannot decipher the drawings of the metal part around which the ribbon must wrap. For adding a column of figures, it is much faster to add on a desktop printing calculator than to poke numbers on a cell screen or a laptop, and then it's easy to check your figures for accurate input. Can you help? Thanks, Ellen

      If there's a ribbon in there already, it should be fairly obvious how it goes; the new one replaced the old. If there is no ribbon, best I can tell you is get some rubber gloves because you'll end up with inky fingers. These are some of the absolute simplest printing mechanisms, a descendant of the old typewriter ribbons from many years ago. The ribbon will go in front of the print wheels and behind the paper, so the wheels can press the ribbon into the paper and make an impact. As far as any other metal guides, they are there to ensure the ribbon spools up onto the other spool. Just play around with it, if you get it wrong, you'll know very soon when the ribbon goes out of place. I went and looked up the manual for yours, and it's basically the same as all of the other mechanisms. Pretty simple to work out, you should have it done in less than 2 minutes.

    have this kind of calculator, but the display has started showing an "E" behind the number, and will not print anymore. can you tell me how to get rid of the "E", or what does it mean? we did try the reset button on the back of the machine--did not work. thank you

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 років тому

      Check all the switches to make sure you have them in the right mode. If it only shows the "E" when in print mode, perhaps it's telling you there is an error with the printing unit. If it shows it all the time, try setting all switches to how I have them in this video and see if that makes a difference.

      Remove the ribbon and the E for error will disappear

    we had a Sharp EL-1750V the error has been E 0 and the sound of the gear was too loud. then after checking inside the gear fell off a bit and as we check further we saw that the holder of the gear with the screw had been broken

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  5 років тому

      Gears break. Sometimes the plastic ages and dries out too much and become brittle, other times it's user error. If you can find someone with a 3D printer they may be able to print a new gear for you. Otherwise you might find a used one on ebay that has the gear you need in good shape. Lastly, you can still buy calculators like this today.

    just saw you presenting Sharp EL 1197PIII Printing Calculator, But I have the model el 2615 I’ve had the calculator for about 3 years but since 2-3 weeks sometimes numbers on the key board don't print on my roll of payer, how should i clean this machine with what cleaner and where do i apply the cleaner products, thanks a lot, serge

      I cannot be sure without seeing your unit and what it's doing, but my guess would be to clean the print mechanism with isopropyl alcohol.

    My display shows 0.E I've unplugged and re plugged in but the error message does not go away. Any sugggestions?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  3 роки тому

      If the calculator is set to non-print mode, but the message still appears, I'd try changing the battery. There's a CR2032 coin cell battery in it for memory, perhaps it's dead and causing that error.

    I had a few teachers that used these to add up my grades for the semester. Never really got why these printed the paper. I guess it's to show the steps in case one were to make a mistake. Not too useful otherwise since the machine can't label each step. At any rate, certainly a step up from the older style adding machines with the big pull lever and excessive bulk.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  8 років тому +2

      +Rebelkid1112 The pull lever on the adding machines are like a "C" or "AC" button on a calc now, it would clear them. Take a look at 1950's grocery store videos, the registers worked in a similar fashion.

      Get a new one first, then look at how the old one is installed. It should be self-evident.
