Irrespective of the film's conclusions, I enjoyed the fiilming of the landacape and the places I will never have the chance to visit. That part of the world is so beautiful geologically, and they are shown so beautifully here. Thank you for making this visually stunning film.
This is simply a great series. The ancient travel and trade routes. Lucky and brave enough to step through ancient Bacteria in Alexander's footsteps. I'm not going to go into Internet history expert so I'll leave it at that. Too bad others haven't. Great stuff, and I haven't enjoyed a documentary this much in ages. Top quality.
What a treasure Especially liked the 'golden fleece' connection showing the ancient use of sheepskins to hold washed gold. This is exactly how clues are put together and closest semblance of Truth is found. Greatly appreciated, what a fabulous life adventure you lead.
Yes, indeed, because we all know how well museums (like Iraq's and Afghanistan's ) have managed to protect the historical artifacts in their care. Wide geographically spread artifacts are the best chance that at least some of them will survive into the future, despite organized state museums ability to have them all destroyed in one place at one time.
The two of you are made of tougher stuff than I. I will go into the Yucatan jungle in search of misplaced Maya cities, but I would not be willing to go into Taliban controlled Afghanistan, and walk around on ground that has been sown with land mines. Better you than me. Thank you for taking me along as a ghost observer from a safely distanced computer screen.
Very speculative documentary. The battlefield where Alexander fought with Persian Army and a very old civilization was located 2000 km south of Caspian Sea. There was no way for him to sail and cross the Alborz mountains. He reached there somewhere thru Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. That climate change and expanded seas on the north could not coincide with Alexander era which was about 2200 years ago.
For 1000’s of years, Afghanistan was territory of Persian Empire and a century ago it was divided due to nasty influence of British Empire. Alexander invaded great civilization of Persian Empire before long before leading his war toward India and passing through Eastern territories which is now called Afghanistan. He had to climb north to skip the vast deserts located in central and eastern part of Iran. Nobody was lucky enough to pass the desert with an army and survive in lack of water and vegetation. Deserts were extended to south and southeastern part of the country covering eastern part of current Pakistan. So, the India was the next eastern neighbor of Iran and two nations were divided by very large, dry and salty deserts. No army passed those arid lands by horseback riding. This Photojournalist should explore the history and civilization among the cities governed by Persian Empire. Long before Alexander, Persia and Greece and Romans were in bitter fights for near 300 years. While he is crediting Alexander for building some villages in Afghanistan, he disregards his destructive demolishing of the Pasargadae and Takht-e-Jamshid Palaces which were capital of first and largest empire in the world. The nation believed on God (Ahoora Mazda) led by Zoroastrian. Afghanistan was the most remote territory of Persian Empire and still is considered very underdeveloped rural area. After death of young assailant to eastern civilizations, his army commanders ruled in Iran for 70 years and after getting educated with Persian culture, they all were kicked out efficiently by brave fighters rooting from northern part of Iran.
28:00 if thats an inland water way, then the easiest way to prove that is to look down and see if there are any marine shell remains. If there aren't, then it wasn't. The fact they didn't look down and show these marine animal shells IMO hints at there not being any.
The seats on this ship at the start are too far forward compared to the paddles. You can see rowers struggle to pull the paddle all the way back through as they have too little space between their chest, how far their back can lean back, and the maximum paddle extension. Moving every seat 15 cm or more in the direction of the rowers back would allow them to pull the paddles with their backs instead of with their arms, allowing more strength in the paddle and a more natural rowing position. You can especially see it here: 8:15, take note of the older gentleman with dark glasses struggling in an awkward paddle motion.
I don't like superlatives. They are often misused for the mundane. However, in this instant I need to use superlatives. This is stunning, the most wonderful rare footage and unbelievable 'reckless dare-do'. I am short of adjectives. Thank you for making this video available, so that I could ride back saddle, with you, as you make this incredible sojourn across the back bone of the world, across its roof top peaks, and down its dusty rocky mountain passes in pursuit of Alexander's fading footprints. Remarkable!
The fact that you do not include maps that clearly indicate where you are at each specific place that you are investigating is INCREDIBLY frustrating. It is like discovery while blindfolded.
A highly engaging documentary. Bactria and thousand cities might refer to Indo-iranian people and city-states they established. These city states or kindoms were called mahajanpads or great republics. They are mentioned in Buddhists texts. There was Gandhar what today is Afghanistan. A documentary on oxus river civilization of bronze age will be welcome.
I also wish that you would have provided a phonetic spelling for the places that you visited so that it would be FAR easier to look them up using Google Earth. As is I cannot even begin to more or less locate half of them.
Alexander was Macedonian, and Greece is not Europe. It is said the people's in the land called Hellenes (back then not 1 country but several kingdoms) called the section way up to northeast Europe, but they too did now know how much more land was all the way up north or exactly which areas as it could have been just Spain and Italy.
Western part of Turkey and beyond Istanbul is considered European territory, so Greece is included in the Europe as well as Macedonia. Europe is a new designation, but on those old days, we had Roman Empire and territory of Greece, even though, the designated ethnicity of communities could root more than 5000 of years.
@@alexconcord3597 Balkans. Europe is a fancy term for special people. They kept increasing their membership. The continent is Eurasia, only 1 continent surrounded by water there.

10:00 minutes in, and I wonder what exactly am I watching. 12k BC to 6k BC, even if true (where is the evidence?) is a completely different timeframe as 1k BC. The tale could be at a minimum 5k years older 'than we think' just to fit some crazy alternative history? What the heck is going on? Are they serious? There are getting very close to ancient alien made up fantasy 'history' content. I'm giving it a bit more time, but for now I'm highly sceptical of this programme.
i would like to say to all directors , producers and historians , people who cannot think pass their noses , would say alexander did not discover because there were people there before , it is like when C C discovered what is noe the Americas people say he did not discover any thing there were people here , i m no historian , im no philosopher but common sense rules the day.
He discovered it for his culture. CC did discover America, (for the Europeans.) Just like how the Vikings discovered Greenland for their culture, and possibly North America and Bar Sauma discovered Europe and Byzantia for the Chinese.
Why do you not tell why 90percent of all rivers and lakes in that region are dry due to Russian redirecting the inflows to the Asoz, Caspian, Aral, etc
I enjoyed this immensely! Tho i don’t think it’s more likely the Argonauts myth derives from the time of the Younger Dryas warming than the Mycenaean’s sailing towards Ararat via the Black Sea, which had Minoan settlements already existing- this was still a very enjoyable & informative video. And you never know, your theory could be more accurate than we know! Cheers friend 🍻

Alexander the Great is considered a Greek, as he was the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon, which is considered part of the Greek world despite being on its periphery; his name "Alexander" is also of Greek origin.
I have tremendous respect for multi lingual people. However, if you want to accuse someone of inaccuracy you should at least attempt accuracy. This is barely legible, on top of only being partially correct. He was Macedonian. He's also Greek.

Would be nice if the description included when this was filmed.
My guess is 2004-2008. Based on equipment and Hamid Karzai was still president.

You should know that the travel and discovery happened by the south to north and the east to the west .. not the other way around
Are you nuts. That whole thing could collapse at any time,!!! 😮

You are absolutely right. The myth may have its origins in Mycenaean or Minoans trade routes to the east in other Bronze age cities .

Did the ancients have F14s? 0:03
amazing. thank you
I dont suppose the sheep enjoyed it much. 😢
You might want to consider that the story is, well, a story.
