  • This Lenovo Smart Display is the first smart speaker with Google Assistant on a screen. It runs Android Things and is a completely new way to use an intelligent assistant. Our question - is it better than the Amazon Echo?

    Agreed with Dieter that timers is the most useful thing about the Google Home. Ultimate kitchen sidekick.

    • @vdinh143
      @vdinh143 6 років тому +2

      Because the most useful thing is not the only useful thing. You gotta realize that not every product is meant to deliver the most value for what little money a college student can scrape together. Why buy a rice cooker when you can just use pots and pans; why buy a car when you can take the bus at discounted rates; why even get a mattress when you can just sleep on the floor all the same?
      I'm the kind of guy that values function over aesthetics, but I've partially come around on well-designed UX. I think a device designed for a particular use case without having to compromise for anything else (and is thus well executed) is a worthy buy. Maybe not for you, maybe not for me, but there are people out there who find it pleasant to use.

    • @rachelcruz370
      @rachelcruz370 6 років тому

      Yes if you put it that way. But it is much more convenient by just saying "Hey Google put timer 5 minutes" or "Hey Google chicken Parmesan recipe." Might as well top it off with "Hey Google play What a wonderful world by Louis Armstrong." I used to think the same, until I got one.

    The reason I bought an Echo dot instead of a google home was due to the fact that I could speak to an echo dot by just saying its name “Alexa” instead of saying something awkward like “Hey Google” or “ok google”. If google home ever changes its wake word to something similar as “Alexa”, then I will buy into google ecosystem. Until then, I am good with my echo dot :)

  • @evyordanov
    @evyordanov 6 років тому

    The Verge guys, please, please, please - STOP saying the trigger words on your assistant videos!
    You're making videos for a specific target audience - early adopters and tech enthusiasts. And all these people already have at least one of these devices laying around.
    I, myself have a few, and your videos are constantly triggering them. And I'm so annoyed at this point that even though I love content from The Verge, I'm seriously considering not to watch any of your videos until you correct this. Just go see how the "Tech with Brett" channel handles this, as he's covering primally assistants videos. He's doing it spot on.
    Please consider these changes asap, or I'm afraid you might lose a considerable chunk of your following 😥

    1:10 i LOVE how MOST of the world assumes covering the CAMERA will do the trick, what if the "viewing device"(not the camera) to spy on us was REALLY "hiding in plain sight" like IN the SCREEN? your BEST bet is to lay it on its face and cover the back camera if you NEED privacy for bathroom/shower and tape off the microphone area. With great tech also comes great....ANNOYANCES!! i cant say the other saying,but you knew where it WAS heading :)

    The ability to show something similar to Apple Home on the home screen of this thing would be great. If I could use this as a smart home control center to turn lights on and off then I could ditch all other light switches. Make it happen Google!

    • @WahidRazali
      @WahidRazali 6 років тому

      jedijens you can control more than 5000 gadgets from more than 250 brands with it. Basically all of gadgets that have a "works with the Google Assistant" badge or certification. And that includes lots of lights or plugs or switches, which all can be used to say "Hey Google switch off the lights" for example.

    • @jedijens
      @jedijens 6 років тому

      Wahid Razali That's great but it can't be done from the touch interface. Sometimes it's easier to touch a button than talking to the assistant.

    • @WahidRazali
      @WahidRazali 6 років тому

      jedijens it actually can, most appliances & gadgets will have a screen to touch control so you can quickly tune what you asked for more precisely. For example say "Hey Google, dim the lights" and they may dim to 60%. At which point you will be able to touch a cursor to quickly bring it down to say, 47%. If that's what you want to do.

    Oh look a physical camera slider. It's almost as good as cutting the power to the camera. But people wouldn't trust that.

    why Google doesnt come up with a cool name(or personality) for the Assistant? As always, they are improving drastically in some areas, but staying dormant in others. They HAVE TO GIVE ITS ASSISTANT A NAME. Stop pretending voice is just another way of typing (OTA) and "give life" to the searchbar

    I have the 10 inch one in my kitchen along with an Alexa In my livingroom. In my opinion, the Lenovo is absolutely useless. Coming from Google, cant even get on something simple as Facebook and they are selling these for 150-200 dollars. It's a total waste of money

    Quit saying the magic words "hey Google" !!! You triggered my phone and mini and home assistants four times!!. Super annoying. I couldn't watch the video because my phone assistant would just pop up and my other two would be responding during the video so I couldn't hear!

    Can we stop saying okay Google on review videos. In the span of just minutes my Google home called Felicia who I have been avoiding for years. Changed the UA-cam video before it ended to some CNN Trump stuff. And now my phone keeps reminding me to buy cheese Everytime I leave the house.

    I’m wondering if we as consumers even need this. As far as smart speakers go this is ok. It’s literally a giant tablet with a bigger speaker. Microsoft Surface Hub is something really worth checking out and if implemented correctly it could be something special
