    I live in the pacific NW; I had a beautiful opuntia cactus in my yard that a contractor stomped. I was devastated. I was fairly certain that I could plant some of the paddles but I really wasn't sure how to do it correctly. I appreciate advice from someone who is so obviously an expert. I have been on UA-cam for years but this is the very first time that I have subscribed to any channel -- high praise from me. Thanks, Juan, I'm a fan!

    I’m in Pennsylvania and I have a patch of eastern prickly pear (humifusa or cespitosa). It was just a few pads I got last year. This year they are going INSANE. I was so worried about doing it right and babying them to start the roots, but that was completely unnecessary. They are very aggressive rooters, there is no wrong way to do it. I’ve had them root by letting the cut ends callous and then burying them halfway, I’ve had them root and grow when they’re just laying flat on the soil. Even small pieces, broken pieces, or shriveled pieces that fall will root and grow. It’s almost scary in a way how even a broken piece of a pad can set roots and start growing whole new pads. A small 1” piece fell into a pot of miscellaneous sempervivums, it grew and grew over the last year and now it has maybe a dozen full size pads from that small 1” piece. If you’re a beginner and want something foolproof - or if you live in a cold climate like here in the eastern US, try eastern prickly pear. So simple and they grow so quickly.

    Hi Juan! This is the best, most straight forward video I've found. Thank you so much! I live in SW Texas :) One quick question, so just to clarify once you put the pad in soil you don't water it right away? How long do you wait to water after putting it in the pot? Thanks!

    • @juanolivarez773
      @juanolivarez773  5 років тому +4

      Well a cactus is full of water to begin with, so you could actually go months. When I lived in 29 Palms, I wouldn't water for a month or so, and they were out in the sun. So I guess thats a good rule of thumb. A month is good. And after you do water, make it very sparingly in the pots. In the ground don't water. Prettier cactus that way. 😉

    Wear gloves! Some varieties have invisible micro spines and you’ll suffer like crazy if you get a dozen or so of them in your hands. The tweezers from a Swiss Army knife used in strong sunlight are the best solution I’ve found (you won’t believe how hard those micro spines are to see). Good luck , have fun, and protect yourself!

The grow light is not that great but it sort of helps, and there are no windows in my office. How do I water the cactus pad once i placed it in soil? Do I lightly spray the topsoil once a month, or do I water it regularly once a month? Thank you for your time and care.

    I tried growing a velvety tree pear pad. Spent a day in my car and then I planted it straight in the ground, bottom first. Only sat it about an inch into the soil. The soil was fairly moist so I didn't bother watering it. A few weeks later the bottom rotted off it and then it shrivelled up and dried out. Gave up on trying to grow them from pads after that so now I just rip small plants out of the ground and plant those instead. Will have to try again with this info one day.

    Great video :) we just bought a house in Arizona that has two big prickly pears of different types. The very bottom of them looks rotted dried out and almost moldy, but the top 3/4ths is heathy and fine. Should I do anything about this or just leave them? I think they are getting too much water when it rains but they are so giant I can't transplant them anywhere. Do you think it's worth trying to save or should I just take the cuttings and bulldoze the rest of the plant and start over in a dryer area if the yard? I think it has been neglected for a long time, there are many pads that have fallen off and rooted laying down and of course they are flat on the ground and get way too much rain when we get monsoons. It breaks my heart to kill something that roots so easy and wants to live so bad. 😭 Also I don't know anyone here to give away pieces, I have given away as many as I can to my neighbors, so the other pieces would have to go into the garbage 😭 any tips on getting new homes for them?

      I know some opuntias grow in the northern climes and do well. Try and find the healthiest specimen then make sure the wound where you cut it heals completely. Then plant dry, don't add water till you see growth and then only sparingly. Good luck.

    This is the first video on cacti propagation that was described in detail. Great video! I have a question; I took a pad from a cactus I found that has large purple fruits on it. It has pretty large pads. Do you know what kind of cactus this is? The area where it was growing was in zone 7 so it gets down to 0 degrees from time to time, and it survives. I am propagating it right now and I just want to identify it. Thanks so much!

    • @juanolivarez773
      @juanolivarez773  5 років тому +1

      There are several Opuntia species that have purple fruit. And most people don't know just how frost and freeze tolerant they are. Some actually grow up in Canada. Your best bet is to look up the website Opuntia identification and just go one by one. Good luck. I know the macrocentra, santa rita, and the polylopha grow in the northern zones.

    Hi Juan ~ Thanks for this great video. I live in The Dalles, Oregon ~ It is in the Columbia River Gorge and the weather here is all over the place ~ up to 115 in the Summer, Wet Springs and Autumns and in the last three years we have had 2 winters of 4 ft of snow that lasted for months. I Know Cactus will grow here ~ I want to take starts of a prickly pear that is already well established in my yard ~ My question is how long should I keep the cuttings in a pot before I try to introduce them out in the garden. I have a covered porch that I could shelter them for however long need be but I would be nervous putting a new cutting out right away ~~ Any Thoughts?

    • @juanolivarez773
      @juanolivarez773  4 роки тому

      harrishollow1 always great to hear from my home state. I was born in Nyssa in 1953. To tell the truth, the faster you plant in the ground the better. I even stick cuttings with no roots in the soil. Just make sure they are dusted with sulfur, or rooting hormone so they don’t pick up microbes or fungus. And don’t water them. A good hardy cactus is opuntia Macrocentra. It’s lavender with black thorns on new growth. Good luck.
