'Bruiser' the Whidbey Island resident elk is in his yearly grumpy mood

- People on Whidbey Island are being warned to stay away from one of the island's most popular residents because he's grumpy right now.
"Bruiser," the Whidbey Island elk has been taking his anger out on what he can find recently, including a car. "He's the only elk on Whidbey Island," said Washington State Fish and Wildlife official Ralph Downes.
The wayward elk has been living on Whidbey Island for more than 10 years. Wildlife officials believe he swam over from Skagit County with his herd and never went back.

I live on the Island and have been visiting this elk ever since he arrived and just LOVE him! My fiance and I visit him on Saturday evenings in Fall for our 'Saturday Date Night' and most weeks we see him! We saw him 2 weeks ago and I took a long video of him. He was as handsome and healthy looking as ever and no problem whatsoever.
In fact I have never ever had a problem with him. He's walked from the road right next to my car with zero incidents. He doesn't like cars when someone is running their engine and just sitting there. This is a threat to him. Also, don't be right on the roadside impeding his passage as this too is annoying for him. .' If you don't respect this elk or if you are like all the people at Yellowstone who is invading wild animal's space, animals let you know, whether in rut or out of rut.
No
I love that everyone is understanding and respectful of him and when he is just being an elk you all see it for what it is and I love that ❤

He is absolutely beautiful ❤️ i feel so bad for him all alone for so many years 😢 i wonder why he stayed behind? They said he swam over with the herd.
He is our Island's mascot and some people who live in that part of town have fed him (from a distance!)
My gosh, please, please - Someone needs to bring a friend to the Island for him to have company!! He must be so lonely, all creatures need affection and a sense of belonging.
Why not get him a mate
As a military family, we were stationed on Whidbey Island from 1991- 1995. We've enjoyed the scenery and spotting the vast array of wildlife.
Make sure he has food. Old guys get grumpy without food.
He needs ... 🐱🐱🐱... its mating season
He has PLENTY of food. There are apple and pear trees all over where he hangs out plus lots of grass!
He just a boy asking a girl to love him !😊
Oh wait , there is no girl !
Stay away from me, too. In my mood😂
Bless him ❤
This is the rut season - of course he's aggressive. Stay well clear of him if you value you health
He's beautiful 😍 he needs a mate. Probably lonely..
He's by himself 😢
Why didn't they bring over some female Elk for him to be a herd with? Poor guy. He is Majestic 🤩😻😻
Are you kidding. This one elk has caused so much trouble than you can imagine...having a whole new 'herd' of them would indeed turn the elk from a 'prized mascot' to an unwelcome problem. He's got his antlers stuck in a buoy, kiddi pools, a bicycle, a 100 foot tarp...he has torn up local apple trees, I saw him mauling a cedar tree pretty successfully...keeping those antlers sharp! Also, he destroyed the septic tank and one year he was covered in the brown goo after evidentially wallowing in it!
@MelissaDuffySacredBreath Gee, Gwen Duffy won the Olympic Triathalon while back. Thank you for report and your enduring these incornveniences.
Why not bring a cow elk for him, the calf if one should come along, could be removed when old enough.
Wow that was huge elk
❤
I bet he misses his herd. He needs to go back
The 'alpha' elk in the herd always 'runs off' the 'betas. He was a 'beta' who was driven off from Skagit Valley and swam over here!
It’s spelled “herd” and he’s free to leave whenever he wants, he’s a wild animal, yet he stays here because he’s old and comfortable.
Ten years ago they shouldve sent him back to his herd. What a lonely life.
I'm in my yearly grumpy mood too! I'm not nearly as handsome though
He needs a girlfriend
He could just swim back but i suppose he likes it where hes at.
Exactly! Whidbey used to be called Paradise Island!
what a majestic dude maybe he'll decide to swim away and find some elk tail
He needs a gf
Get him a mate !!! Then he will not be so grumpy !!!
Cool.❤😊
Big dude is loving his best life and sexually frustrated at the moment 😂😂😂
I know how he feels.
Poor elk.
He may be lonely.
If he doesn't get a heifer this
Season "SOMEONE" WILL MAKE SAUSAGE OUT OF HIM!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
He’s been here for 10 years, genius. 🙄 Oak Harbor is a small community and everyone knows Bruiser, nobody is going to be harming him.
relocate a young female, then when grumpy is gone, either relocate her or find her a new male
Get him a friend at least! Heartless!
It's not heartless, Karen.
@mortalclown3812 I was being a smartass but ok, I'll be a karen now!
He needs a distraction of the female persuasion.
Challenging man to swim and drive occasionally with passenger ?
He needs a harem😢
So get him a couple girlfriends very sad to not give him companionship. How would you like not having anyone as a human? This is animal cruelty at its finest. Shame on you.
He actually socializes with deer, sheep, cows etc. He used to 'bed down' in front of an old couples bedroom and they have apple trees that he loved. He likes classical music and hung outside the music teacher house when she played the pisno. He is a solo elk but gets a lot of love and positive regard here nonetheless. He could choose anytime to swim elsewhere but its his choice and he chose to stay here!
Rejoin this bad boy with his relatives!
Did you even listen to the report?
😂
Put your listening ears on. At his age it would be detrimental to break his routine.
@@mortalclown3812 Actually, yes. Where there is a will there's a way.
No, Alpha males from where he came from would attack him just like they did when he was younger. It is how these elks live. Dominant one gets all the girls in a harem and the less dominant are attacked and driven out Bruiser was a Beta elk. He can't compete at age 15 to become an Alpha plus it would be super disorienting to put him in a totally different habitat.
Get him a woman
Uh uh.
You’re in my yard ruining it than there’s gonna be Elk on the menu that night.
Ridiculous that residents want him to stay on the island as a tourist attraction then moving him to his natural surroundings. Typical rich Seattle selfishness
He swam here because he chose our island as the place for him to live. He has been thriving here for the last 10 years. He is now about 15 years old. It is dangerous to tranquilize him especially at his age and cruel to want to displace him from his familiar habitat where he has lived for most of his life. There is no need to relocate him.
@@melissaduffy4 ok, you can keep your pet.
@@secamd1one1776why are people like you so adamant that you know wildlife better than the experts? Breathtaking arrogance. 😂
@@secamd1one1776 he is an elder elk. To relocate him would likely kill him now. Predators and what not or younger, stronger bulls.
Why didn't they relocate him...let's say 5-10 yrs ago??
Help that guy get back to the Tru mountains to live out his days. CRUEL HUMANS MAKING FUN OF HIM😮
No one's being cruel.
Med check.
Nope, for him to be moved would be very bad for him. He's familiar with his territory here, and has been here for about 12 years now. What would be cruel would be to tranquilize him and move him elsewhere where he is not familiar with the surroundings. He is actually very happy here and is treated very well. You DO have to know how to relate to him. Anyone who leaves their car motor on and sits there as he goes by is threatening for him from what I have observed. He's been going by me and my fiance for 12 years as I turn the motor off when we see him and pull over in such a way as we don't impede or obstruct his walking and give him the space he deserves. He has chosen during the rut to walk slowly and with relaxation right by my car numerous times and I talk with him and he is super mellow with us even during his rut. We've NEVER had ANY problem with him.
They let the imagrants
Should have called him Trump...grumpy, aggressive and way past his best.
This elk is being maligned. He is NOT generally grumpy or aggressive and is totally handsome, majestic and for most of us who live on this island, he is totally beloved and has not been a problem for us even in rut. I just posted a long video of him walking down the road calmly past us two weeks ago on FB. I sing to him as he goes by and play acoustic piano music for him (He likes this) and he's used to my voice. SO many of us on Whidbey totally love him!
He put his antlers through the side of someone’s car a couple months ago, he is pissssssed! He definitely needs a lady friend.
Bring him some ladies
