    I really appreciate this video! For some reason, selvage is a term that I’ve struggled to remember the meaning of. I particularly love that you’ve included how the selvage comes to be, and the origin of all those little holes! Having just that little tidbit of information about where a fabric begins on a loom made a wealth of difference. Thank you, Evelyn!

    I found you when looking for the definition of selvage. I do not sew, but do knit and am learning to do brioche knitting. One instructor mentioned the first stitch on the row as being the selvage stitch. I needed to know more! Thank you for this great group of term videos. I have been able to apply these terms to understand my knitting better! Here's to the blending of fabric knowledge.

    I have fallen in love with your channel. But I must ask, could you do a hair and makeup tutorial? I'm assuming that goes off the normal thing of your channel, but you look so authentic and I would love to know how you do it. And yes this video cleared that up..I'm just beginning in the craft of sewing.

    I’m so grateful I found your Tutorial! I teach young girls to sew and explaining the straight of the grain and the cross grain, let along the bias is interesting. Sometimes I see eyes glasses over! I’ve told them that the holes on the selvage are from putting the fabric on the frame (thank you for the correct term, frame) and the straight threads go down the frame and the threads going sideways (across) are woven back and forth. The woof and the warp. I was hoping I was right and your tutorial was the only one I could that clarified this for me. Thank you.

    • @Evelyn__Wood
      @Evelyn__Wood  5 років тому +2

      I'm so happy to hear it!! At school I remember being told, how to remember which is which, that think of warp thread like 'warp speed' it goes on forever down the length of the fabric 😘

      On the video at the lower bar, next to the settings gear, if a video has closed captions it will have 'CC' just press it and you get subtitles! French lessons!!! Yes!! I don't know anything yet though!

    Thanks Evelyn, I actually thought it was a "TYPO " until you clarified the fabric EDGE as opposed to fabric "remnants " which might be considered SALVAGE from a scrap pile. By the way, I just signed up for a sewing class at McDougal sewing center here in Houston, Texas. Then eventually I will purchase a SAILRITE walking foot sewing machine before I tackle a drapes project for my home. My old Singer won't qualify for the large job. Onward & Upward ! J K

    Question here ☝️ if you ends up with scrap with no salvage left visible and say on the next day, you decide to use this scrap for a piece but you need it on the grainline, how would you remember/know which one is which ?

    • @tw6553
      @tw6553 4 роки тому +1

      I have same question. If your piece of fabric has had the selvage removed, how can you tell which is the right way up

    • @elainemarielaswell4957
      @elainemarielaswell4957 4 роки тому +1

      @@tw6553 Hope this tip helps: The selvedge/selvege that is the lengthwise grain will have a tight pull to it. The crosswise grain will go across the body - that's how I remember it. If you have a sizable piece of fabric and are holding it up with the top selvege at the top and the bottom at the bottom of the fabric, you can cut a tiny snip into the top or bottom of the fabric's selvage and rip the fabric at the snip straight downward. This is known as 'truing' fabric, which will straighten the grain out.

  • @swks50

    I picked out this nice rib knit fabric that is kinda like a very long noodle. Its not a square piece and the only edges are at the top of it. and then all the way at the other end at the bottom. Would those technically be the Selvedge?

    Hi Evelyn , my name is Jina and I'm a prophet that is in the world and as a woman of Montessori learning for my children and grandchildren I'm doing work for Jehovah and he guided me to you for lessons on sewing and I wanted to know if you have any knowledge on how to make your own patterns from scratch and could you help me understand how to be a Montessori sewer for children learning in the home cause I was not given any instruction on doing these things in my 5 children raising cause they wouldn't let me come and be a parent in the school system cause they hated me black, indian, german, and some French ancestry, but because I was given the privilege 😘🥰🧵🪡of being a person who walked with Jehovah on the streets of Arlington, Va - thru Washington D.C. people said that I was a Niger and that they missed blessing of being healed of Cancer and other things they were suffering so Jehovah asked me to text you and tell you that I was so upset at the world hating me black and I don't understand how people in the church could tell me to go to hell and not be given things to help me know that Jehovah loves them and I am trying to get people who help me learn now that I'm going to bless only the ones who appreciate my walk in the world and you are someone he gave me, so could you tell me how you hear him and why people don't ask him how to learn cause my parent didn't teach me much Jehovah taught me everything I needed to do for him with no bible and know church and raised my children with the education that was blessed to me to help them not do the destruction of the world and to not hate but walk with Jehovah in me controlling me and telling others to not tell me I can't have the riches of the world now, so please tell me what you can do to bless my children learning sewing information that we have online now. THANK YOU !!!!!! 🧵🪡🥰💌🦺💻
