2 psych classes in high school, associates degree, nursing degree, bachelors degree and through all that I never could learn these. 10 minutes later I have it down. Where have you been all my life?
Michael Britt Glad it made your day, and i definitely will check out that website...thank you. I already subscribed to you so I will just keep posted for more mnemonics you create :)
In all honesty I thought this concept was stupid and did not feel this video was beneficial in any way. Later I was reviewing and quizzing myself and I was proven wrong. Instantly my mind traveled to your silly house hold objects and I was able to connect the dots. So I am reviewing your video again and want to thank you for your contribution to my studies!
carly marre that's so true. I just quickly changed another video just after i watched 2 stages cuz think it is so silly with these items. But.. when i was watching other video, the mind just went back like wha is stage 1. Suddengly rememnered 1 is bun. Rust colour. Trust vs mistrust. Lol. Then i realized it is indeed helpful n i ended up coming back here n i m taking his tips. 😂😂
1. Trust vs mistrust 2. Autonomy vs shame 3. Initiative vs guilt 4. Industry vs inferiority 5. Identity vs role confusion 6. Intimacy vs isolation 7. Generotivity vs stagnation 8. Intergrity vs despair Words can't begin to describe how entertained I am! Very informative
This is insane. I never learned these before in my life and now its as if I know them like the back of my hand!! You're fantastic! Seriously, God bless you!
I took AP Psych back in my junior year in high school, and my teacher showed me this video. It was so helpful. Now that I'm in college, I'm taking another psychology class, and I just used this video to study for my upcoming test. Thank you so much!!
I have a BS in Psych and a Masters in Social Work, plus 12 years working in the field! I could never remember it! 18 mins later and my mind is blown! I’ll never forget it now! You’re a genius! 🙏🏻
I'm not even done with the video and already I have memorized the first four stages and laughing at the same time! This is cracking me up and making what I thought I had memorized, actually memorized! Thanks!
I teach kids and I gotta say that this guy is amazing. Not just in his method, but in his engagement with the viewer and the entertainment that couples his pairing of these eccentric things. I am cramming for an MCAT in 10 days, and though I have been studying for four months, this really was a breath of fresh air. So kudos -- and thanks!!
I found your videos very helpful for me. I passed my LSW Exam yesterday because of your great explanation and teaching style. Thanks for your dedication. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
I had a TBI 3 months before I graduated from the Masters program in Social Work. I have been carrying my test as an albatross for 4 years. I am finally dedicated to studying. But my brain is not the same. THIS WORKS FOR ME! I am so excited. Thank you so much for putting this together.
Thank you so much for making this video!! I'm currently studying for the mcat and I've been trying to memorize Erikson's stages for a while now. This is super helpful! Also, I love your enthusiasm and sense of humour!
I have been trying for 15 or so years to remember Erikson's stages and have never really been successful with it. I have something coming up where I need to memorize it and did a quick google search and found you. In less than 15 minutes I have each stage committed to memory. I look forward to my video proctored exam and the confusion of my proctor when i start mumbling about a skydiver, a dirty dinosaur with a toupee, and Shane hanging out in a shoe car lol. THANK YOU!!!!!
I am studying for the EPPP, having a hard time remembering the stages. I came across this video just to see what it was about. Not only did it have me dying with laughter, it also works. This was so funny to me because I was not expecting this at all, the way he stuffed the car in the shoe -- I will NEVER for get it. Thank you.
This was so helpful! After watching this once and writing it down as we went along, I was already able to repeat the eight stages in order, which I had never been able to do before!
Really didn't think this would work. Wish I had learned these memorization techniques before I graduated from college but I do plan on going to graduate school! I now can remember all Erikson's stages and I appreciate your video!
I hope you understand how many people you have helped and lived you have brightened with this video. I truly appreciate you so much, this was amazing for me!!
Thanks so much. This is awesome. I wrote notes and came up with some different versions for some of the stages. I wanted to test my memory afterwards, so I got a clean page and tried it without looking. I was able to remember all of them!!
I like the idea of making some changes to what I suggest here as far as the rhymes and the associations. Make it your own. Looks like you did that and it worked. Good for you.
Your videos are helping me immensely, I have an exam in a few days and finally see a chance of getting good grades! On an aside, your voice reminds me so much of Vizzini in the Princess bride that I keep imagining him teaching me psychiatry, which the character was actually well learned in!
This was fantastic. I was introduced to this concept many years ago by reading Tony Buzan's various books. At the time I did not understand what he was going on about, but this has now explained to me the use of the peg system. I am so grateful.
Thank you so much for this video! This video and others on your channel have really helped with a lot of concepts on the psych section of the MCAT that I could not remember at all!
2021 studying for the MCAT. I watched this video and "though this is funny", but didn't believe I'd remember any of it. Boy HOW I WAS MISTAKEN!! I remember EVERYTHING!! Thank you sooo much!
I watched this video once and now I answer every single combination of the stages correctly! Thank you so much, this was better than any type of book, flashcard, or mnemonic.
I swear that I saw this video in my AP psych class in 2009 because I remember the shia lebouf being in a tree for initiative vs. doubt and I would never have come up with it. 10 years later I was trying to re-learn these for a licensing exam and looked up the video and here it is. I'm not sure how that is possible with this being posted in 2013 but I am so glad I found this video again.
Hi Florencia. You definitely could have watched this in 2009 because I published the video on my website in 2008. I don't know why it took me so long to upload to youtube. Glad you like it! thepsychfiles.com/2008/08/episode-67-mnemonic-device-for-eriksons-eight-stages-of-development/

I would like to say thank you for your time and effort in putting this video together. I would have to say that the video quality was a little distracting. It seemed to take an eternity to get to the point of what you were teaching. You appear to be very creative and educated. I had to watch your video for an assignment for my lifespan psychology class, though the way I learn I am not sure this will help assist me it was appreciated.
It takes more work, but I think it's better to come up with your own mnemonics. I think it sticks in your head far more when you create them than when you just take them from someone else. For example, for stage 4 (Industry vs Inferiority), I drew a picture of an Inn with a dusty tree (Inn Dust Tree). For stage 8 (Integrity vs despair), I drew a picture of a tag with an N on it on a box of grits (N Tag Grit) and a spare tire with red D's (D Spare). Because I drew out the pictures, I can more easily remember their order. Of course, this doesn't do a bit of good if you haven't learned the concepts of each stage. It merely helps to remember their names and order.
+Vicki Smith I totally agree - it's best to make up your own mnemonic images. But because it is a lot of work I thought I would create these mnemonics to show how the process works. I like the Inn Dust Tree. Excellent.
For number one, I found it a little easier to remember "crust" as it rhymes with "trust", and the idea of a crust is related closely to bread/buns. Just something for someone to try in case the rust idea doesn't stick!
2016 and I'm using in college, thank you. I enjoyed your enthusiasm, and how you incorporated your lil girls toys. thank you, it really is a lot a help.
This is 100% how I got through A and P AND nursing school. I use picture forms of numbers too. 1 can be turned into an old fashion candle stick, 2, can be turned into a swan, 3 is a sideways heart and so on… Some people think I’m crazy, but I’m passing sooooo 🤷🏽♀️
I love these videos I just wish the Android versions for the Psych Test Hero were still in the Google Play Store. Great presentations and lots of humor, perfect!

To be honest, I thought what I saw here was a little bit crazy. All right, more than a little bit crazy... However, I stuck with it - and at the end, I found myself thinking "One is a bun..." and started unpacking the rust, the trust, and the mistrust! I could do the same with almost all the stages (except 'inferiority' - I might go with fear, 'cos a T-Rex is a scary dinosaur after all!) A surprisingly good memory trick. Thanks!
I was skeptical but this actually worked for me! Pretty great. Shia is an even better example of Initiative now because of the whole "JUST DO IT" speech now, ha.
Almost 10 years later and this technique still goes hard. Absolutely incredible, I am blown away.
