    A truly wonderful and emotional advert from Qantas. I really appreciate the understanding of my thoughts about the family ties of moving to Australia or away from Australia.

      This is a remake of the very same song/advertisement from the the 90's or it could be earlier ir later I can't remember. But it resonated with the Aussie ppl and all ours celebrities that move away for there careers and as a result became synonymous with Qantas and being Aussie as well. But I think It is also true for anyone no matter which country we live in or a town or city we've grown up in. We all have that one place where we are drawn home to that makes us all feel welcome no matter how far or long we've been away from it. So in that regard it pulls at everyone's heart strings.

      My parents immigrated to Australia in the 1950s from Italy… back then Australia was much further away. High cost of travel, expensive phone calls and no internet, it was hard to keep in touch with friends and family. Now days it’s not too bad in comparison.

      As someone who works for qantas, I always feel a sense of pride when I see these commercials. Also this commercial was made 2 years ago but was held back due to the pandemic. As for you and Charlie moving here we did it as a family in 1969, my mum was the youngest of 5 children so you can imagine my Nans reaction when we did immigrate.

    When you live outside Australia, and your making a trip back to Australia for a visit or returning, and you are flying Qantas, once you put one foot inside that Qantas plane, you have the feeling of being home. Then you hear the Australian accent from the crew, you know your almost home.

      And then something goes wrong and you have to cancel your fully flexible flight and spend around 7 Qantas days (days when you spend the great proportion of your day on hold trying to get some customer service) and finally after just 16 weeks- a period that would embarrassed Ryanair, you receive your refund!

      @@dalane5196 we'll you are indeed very lucky! I've had several issues with QF ground customer service over the years. Just one example (out of many): Qantas cancels return flight from DRW to CBR. Offers no alternatives. Up to us to research flights so we can get home, have to contact CS. Spend hours on the phone. If only their ground customer service was even as half as good as their air side.

    There's something about Qantas. For Australians all over the world it's that link, that wonderful machine that will get us home. I remember being at the end of a long business trip in Europe and I finished up a Frankfurt airport waiting for many hours to board my Qantas flight late at night. As I stepped on I said to the Cabin Crew, "Take me home." He replied, "That's the idea, mate." It felt so good.
    On a totally different matter. I lived in the UK for a while and was married in Dorset. My wife was at her new Australian job one day typing a report when she heard her boss laugh and say, for her benefit, "Tell that pommy bird there's no U in Qantas."

    Always a successful marketing campaign from qantas, the song by the late Peter Allen. That is Lake Hillier I think. The young lady on the phone is Ash Barty (recently retired tennis star), the guy at the pool is Adam Goodes (former
    etired Swans AFL player). Edit: there was a musical (theatre show) written about the life of Peter Allen. The Broadway release starred Hugh Jackman, so that was a clever choice to have him sing the New York scene...

    • @Shrapnel117
      @Shrapnel117 2 роки тому +3

      We saw Hugh's "The Man. The Music. The Show" stage show a couple years ago when his tour hit Adelaide, South Australia. Kind of a 'best of' for Hugh's musicals, there was a Peter Allen section near the middle. The whole show was absolutely spectacular.

    • @PiersDJackson
      @PiersDJackson 2 роки тому +2

      When Hugh had his big breakout role in X-Men, his very manly fans went to see him on Broadway in "The Boy from Oz" - in which he plays the Flamboyantly gay Peter Allen, who originally performed "I still Call Australia Home".... real shock to the system, kind of like seeing a play where Brian Blessed is quiet and laid back, or Alan Rickman without any snarkiness.

    The young lady saying "I miss you. Can't wait to see you" is Ash Barty, world No1 tennis champ who retired from the tennis circuit just recently at 25 and while still No 1. Re the grandmother - I related that to her meeting her grandchild for the first time after 2 and a bit years of Covid. For me that day will be in a few days. I was an Aussie expat for 10 years in the 90's an naughties and Qantas always played the song on final approach coming into Brisbane airport. Talk about soften you up for greeting the family at the gate. I still get choked up 20 years later just thinking about it. This ad theme was started in the late 80's and there have been about 4 iterations if I'm not mistaken. They are all just as powerful and this is a great update. These ads from Qantas are always epic, both visually and emotionally. The song lends itself to association with images of sweeping landscapes and iconic landmarks that Australians will recognise, both from home and abroad, because other than our first-nations peoples, most of us are within a few generations of being immigrants, with ties to other parts of the world. Given our (well deserved) reputation as world travellers, I think this song has a special relevance and meaning to many, many Australians.
    Interesting fact: Australia and New Zealand are the only countries in the 'Top 10 Countries whose people travel the most' (WorldAtlas) which do not share at least one land border with another country/countries.

    That wonderful song was written by Australian performer, Peter Allen, who died in 1992 but his song and many of his others, are still much loved.
    The other people in the ad: The two girls in the swimming pool are sisters, Cate and Bronte Campbell, two of our most successful Olympic swimmers.
    The girl in the dark watching family on her phone is World No. 1 tennis champion, Ash Barty.
    Tall aboriginal man standing next to swimming pool is Adam Goodes, former Aussie Rules footballer.
    Behind the children’s choir in the hall, above them is the word Longreach, a town in the Queensland outback which is home to the QANTAS Founders Museum and also, in 1989: Boeing 747-400 - in addition to their usual city names, all Boeing 747-400 aircraft carry the word "Longreach" as part of the livery. This is actually a double meaning - it signifies both the "long reach" of the aircraft (i.e. they have a long range), and the town where Qantas commenced operations : Longreach, Queensland. (Wiki)

I already felt like I was in Australia. I haven't gone back to the old country, but I feel Australia is my country, even though my all other relatives are not here, I'm away from my family so the song reminds me of them. Peter "The Boy from Oz" Allen (actually Woolnough) sure knew how to compose songs that were uniquely Australian and indelibly marked him as such. Early success in US with "brother" Chris made them sought after cabaret artists.
    There is one particuar composition by Allen that says it all about the hardships of living on the land.
    He wrote The Tenterfield Saddler about his Grandfather. It and the Redgum composition the Dimantina Drover say a lot about early Oz.

    My mother and father are expat Brits, so when we were kids we used to travel O/S at least twice a year to visit family and friends or for work. Coming home to Sydney, the flight always arrives at 6am, so you'd fly over the Harbour Bridge (where we lived) and past the Opera House at dawn on the way to the airport. I distinctly remember my brother and I, 3 and 4 years old, having just spent a month at Disneyland and the Cayman Islands with our cousins, flying over the harbour with tears in our eyes saying to each other: "Australia is still home." This song still hits me hard.

    So I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but this ad has been mainly released in response to the Federal Government and State Governments beginning to rollback international arrivals caps and allowing international travel to resume shortly. A lot of Australians have been or were stranded overseas and unable to return home due to lack of resources to repatriate them during the initial outbreak. These QANTAS ads normally tug at the heart strings but with the distance from the rest of the world it has been particularly touching for many people after 2 years of isolation.
    Add to the fact that many Australians have missed births, deaths, marriages and the like over 2 years with many of our families remaining overseas or having moved abroad and a lot of people are going to jump at the opportunity to visit loved ones or have them visit.
    Celebrities in order of first appearance for those interested:
    - Kylie Minogue (recording artist)
    - Troye Sivan at the villa in LA (singer-songwriter)
    - Hugh Jackman (actor)
    - Ash Barty on the video call in Japan (now retired tennis player)
    - Adam Goodes on the rockpool (former AFL star with Sydney/SMFC, retired after a sad saga where it appeared he was being booed for calling out racist heckling during his matches)
    Also, the children's choir that enter in the middle section are in Longreach, QLD, the home of QANTAS originally, the location of the QANTAS founders museum and also the name of their flag bearer aircraft. I think the hangar shown at the end (with the video projections) is actually part of said museum and heritage listed.

    This song pulls the heart strings. I came from Longreach, attended many functions in the Civic Centre (hall) depicted. For those overseas who aren’t aware, QANTAS started out as a regional airline flying between Queensland and the Northern Territory before it became our international carrier. QANTAS is an acronym for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service, the reason there is no ‘u’ in it. We have had a number of national carriers and still do, but QANTAS took over ownership of one, becoming our main national carrier as well as international carrier. I am very proud of QANTAS and the fact I grew up on a sheep station out near Longreach and Winton, spending many years between the two towns. Winton (north of Longreach) is where the concept of QANTAS was born, Longreach is where it started flying.

    Hi Rob, my wife and I along with our 4 young children emigrated from the UK (South London) to Melbourne Australia back in 1970 when most people came here by ship but we were lucky enough to fly here with Quantas at that time they only had two long distance jets which were only small 707s we were on flight QF2 and it took 36 hours stopping in 5 or six different country's. As you said it really was a very hard to leave our family's behind but we decided that if we didn't like living in Australia then we could always return to the UK. For the first 9 months in Australia we were housed in a brand new brick built migrant hostel which was great, because we had 4 children we were housed in two adjoining ground floor units similar to a large ground floor flat. We had commune meals freshly cooked at the hostel, I got a job with the local railway within the first week, our children went to the local primary school and the youngest was looked after by the kindergarten on the hostel which was great. It didn't take us very long to fall in love with the Australian way of life which is so very laid back with lots of public holidays. We have traveled all over this great country and it has become our home, even though we have been back to the UK to visit family many times to us it never seems like we are going home, yet when the plane is about to land back in Australia we do get that feeling of being back home...So Rob I know that you and your family will have a really good time when you are here in Aus in September, I don't know how long you will be here in Aus but I do know that it will not be long enough and I feel sure you will want to come back again in the future...By the way Rob my wife and I have 14 Ausie Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren, so I can safely say we have done our bit helping to in populate this GREAT country.

      There have been no fatal crashes in the jet age. Many people die on planes, just as they would if they were on the ground, but there have been no major incidents resulting in death. QANTAS pre-existed the era of airline safety, and there were a few major incidents in the early years, but not since the jet-age began in the 1950s. That’s 70+ years without a stain on their record. An impressive feat that no other airline in the world can claim.
