I was thinking Cherundolo as well but one would have to argue as a starter at Barca, Dest has already eclipsed him. Also, Felipe made a good argument that Dest is a better fit tactically: with Tyler Adams at the 6 and Eddie Pope next to him to provide cover for his flaws on D.

I put in Jermaine Jones and somehow forgot about JOB. John O'Brien really was one of the best for a tiny short period due to injuries. He scored against Mexico in the famous WC dos a cero. JOB on the left and McKennie on the right wins every ball and would be deadly on offense.

You’ve an excellent list… My only differences would be: Kasey Keller: Interchangeable with Howard. As a former goalie, I’ve rarely seen a better goalie than KK during the mid 90s. Also mentally tougher than TH and a better athlete than Friedel in his prime. Frankie Hejduk: He was a workhorse who I think should’ve at least made your bench list. Note: Donovan’s Everton career was quite good, albeit short. When he was on the field his pace definitely had an impact. O’Brien definitely could’ve made this list as well, bummer his injuries set his career back.

I have to admit that I pretty much agree with your starting 11. Your pre-explanation had me worried, but you brought it home well. I would leave off Brian McBride and add Cherundalo to my bench though. That team has good attacking prowess but needs more backup in defense.
Absolutely love the idea Filippo. Would like to see a Legendary Brazil, El Tri, and MLS 11 from you. May need min games played for the MLS one though. As for this list, the USMNT up until Berthalter played a 4-4-2. So, not sure shoe-horning a 4-3-3 really puts the Legendary Best XI out there. Also, not sold (yet) on Dest or Adams. Not enough caps, and especially in Dest's case, based mostly on hype. I do like the love Filippo shows both Jermaine Jones and Fabian Johnson though. His squad also undervalues players from before 2002. Maybe not Filippo's fault, that is almost 20 years ago now. You're literally starting 2 defenders. I'd love the Dest/Beasley wing pairing in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, but you can't leave your CB's on that much of an island.
I love Eddie Pope!!!! I think Charlie Davies would have been great in this team. I feel he would be a better fit than McBride. We do lack a real striker though. I am hesitant to put Dest and McKennie on this list "YET". I could make an argument in 5 years that our entire Senior Squad will be the best at their positions. I don't think Howard is overtaken and maybe not Beasley yet, but I see Gio replacing his Dad or Donovan. Dempsey is a toss up especially being our 9. So the future looks good.
McKinnie is already the most able player ever for the USMNT at CAM, but Dest will never be as good as Cherundolo, Beasley or Johnson. Johnson was better in the back AND raiding forward on either side of the pitch than Dest will ever be on Dest's natural right side. Just to clarify, I think that Dest is a good choice in this pool and isn't a joke at Barcelona when I've watched. He just isn't Johnson or Beasley, and never will be.
Adams is good but I don't think he has the accomplishments to suggest he's good enough to fulfill that role as a #6. At his age, you are picking him mostly on hope rather than success or ability. Certainly peak Michael Bradley was better player than Adams is now. If you go back to say that 2014 game versus Holland, even though that's a friendly, Bradley looks like a player that would start for either team. Or if not Bradley then maybe Thomas Dooley (1. FC Kaiserslautern was at the time in the Bundesliga). Adams is great, and I do think maybe one day peak Adams will be at a higher level than peak Bradley, but that peak Adams is in the future (we hope). The same sense that you are picking a player on hope feels true to me of Dest. When has Dest exhibited skill over even a single season. At most he's a player whose had a few flashes but whose star seems to be falling at the moment. You mention Fabian Johnson, but you don't mention Steve Cherundolo who holds the record for the most starts in the Bundesliga, piloted his team Hannover 96 to promotion to the Bundesliga, and held the captaincy of that team for its long run at the top division, took them to Europe with a 4th place finish in 2011/2012 and who is so well regarded in Hannover that his nickname is "The Major of Hannover". You are telling me Dest has done more to convince you of his international quality already? Let's let him put together at least one complete season first! Pulisic and McKinney I think are reasonable choices despite the young age. I know I sound like an old duffer thinking that older players are overlooked, but by picking a team of players that aside from a few undeniable legends like Reyna, Beasley, Donovan and Dempsey consists of players from the current era you sound really young.
@Josh McCarty That game against the Portugal was the coaches fault, not Bradley's. Before the game, even the TV commenters noted that Bradley had ran more miles in the first game than any other player in the tournament. And in that heat Bradley had kept up that pace in the Portugal game - again to success, motor has value. But it's the coaches job to realize that you have player with jelly legs and make the appropriate substitutions. Everyone watching the TV could see Bradley was completely gassed. The coach did nothing. All JK had to do was make conservative substitutions and we would have won that game. It didn't require great coaching.
I agree with most of this. Yes, Bradley had his WTF moments but there are many more moments of brilliance (goal at Azteca, goal against Slovenia, performances vs. Mexico in Dos a Cero games). If the US needed a goal Bradley, Dempsey, and Donovan were the ones ppl looked to for it. And I would put Dooley over John Brooks. Right now, I'd settle for Adams being healthy and available for the majority of our WCQ. He clearly cannot be replaced - which is as much an indictment of our depth (and coaching) as it is Adams' talent. I am very concerned his injuries will eventually make him John O'Brien 2.0.

John O’Brien isn’t getting enough credit on this video I know Reyna gets a lot of credit for 2002 but O’Brien played a pivotal role Not to mention O’Brien was the first American player who made his mark in Europe at a big club I know Kirovski was around the same time But O’Brien outperformed him To top it off. John O’Brien is perfect is so many roles. A versatile player You can play him at a 6, as a 8 or on the back line. He would be on the team if I was looking for players at their peak

The kids from now have the highest celling that I have seen in the last 50 years, except for Brooks, Dempsey and Howard which to me still the best we had at their position. Friedel, Perez, Harkes, Ramos, Donovan, Pope, Balboa Reyna and Wynalda would definitely be in the team.
Yeah man you did Cherundolo dirty here. The man is a hall of famer for a reason. He was also consistent in Germany and a captain for his club. You placed Dest in front of him based on his potential. If I went based on potential, John O'Brien would be the GOAT for USMNT. Remember how much potential that guy had coming from Ajax.
It’s absolutely criminal leaving Steve Cherundolo and Tab Ramos off this team. IMO Beasley doesn’t deserve to start and Cherundolo is a no doubt starter. John O’Brien deserves a shout for the team too but I understand leaving him off cause of his injury issues. You gotta expand the roster cause there’s no way you can’t include Howard, Friedel and Keller in the conversation for best all time keeper.

With all due respect to Claudio "Captain America" Reyna, without a doubt. No one in our history was so clutch or so good at elevating the play of everyone around him. He was the definition of a playmaker and an on the pitch Field Marshall, and he never once missed a penalty kick in the entire time he took them for the team.
As much as Claudio was the original "Captain America" and helped carry the USMNT for years...I'd put a healthy O'Brian in the XI ahead of him. As others have commented I'd start Dolo as the RB over Dest....at least at the moment. I feel Dest will eventually be our best RB...but he's not there yet. Love the inclusion of Eddie Pope....he's often overlooked by people who never saw him play. Bradley is a coin flip for me....Yes he had a great career, but I think he'll be surpassed in the very near future.

I would take Bradley over Jermaine Jones any day. Sometimes you need somebody with heart who doesn't check out of games. Jones has quit multiple times when things weren't going his or the teams way.

A few points... consider John O'Brien at the LB spot... when healthy, he played there for Ajax... Dest has yet to show up for us but clearly has for Barca, but my RB is still Cherundolo with Bruce Savage as his back up. I like your CBs but still think an argument can be made for Balboa... Tab Ramos needs to be in the midfield ... and Brian McBride is my Striker, Kellor in net ... go watch those '95 Copa America matches he played in Uruguay or watch that Gold Cup match against Brazil, Kellor over Friedel or Howard for me.
how do you have two players in defense for whom Pope has to cover their defensive weaknesses? Also, what about Dooley? I'd take him over Brooks or Bocanegra. My memory could be inflating his value but I don't think so. I'll take Cherundlo over Dest. As Dest matures, perhaps he will surpass Cherundolo...maybe surpass him by far but he isn't there yet. An Pope won't have to cover Cherundolo's defensive weaknesses.
Tough choice in goal, but I would have gone with Friedel over Howard. He was your keeper in the 02 world cup, your best performance ever on the biggest stage.
Off any positive sample of nat'l team play: Friedel; Beasley, Brooks, Pope, Dolo; Adams, Bradley, Gio; Dempsey, McBride, Landon. Some of these jokers like Dest never has played well for the nat'l team when it mattered (small sample, but would be if he were good too). Heck, Pulisic's nat'l team career's been underwhelming if we're honest w/ ourselves.
Lots of recency bias in this list, but hard to blame you. In his prime, Beasley was a dangerous left wing. Then he lost his mojo and moved to left back, where he was only passable. That he started is testament to the USMNT's lack of depth at that position rather than Beasley's excellence. FJ is probably the most talented LB the US has fielded, but he didn't want to be there and it showed. For me, Lewis would start as he was consistent and reliable. Cherundolo is the best right back and it's not close. Dest could one day surprass him, but that's projecting quite a bit. The best any right back in a US kit has performed, however, was Tony Sanneh during the 2002 WC. Dude rarely put a foot wrong. And thank you, thank you, thank you for the Dempsey love! Whether from fans or managers, club or international, Deuce never seemed to get the credit he deserved. Maybe he was too brash and cocky for some, but if he hadn't had those traits, he never would've reached the heights he did. More kudos for mentioning McBride. Brian always gave 100 percent and would've been the only pure striker/target.
What would be cool is if you made a Central America XI. No Mexico. Teams like El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

This is a very good line up. No Mastroeni but also no Bradley and thank God for no Altidore. I would take Mastroeni over Bradley any time. Bradley had a tendency to get lazy and lose the ball which would turn into a goal for the opposition as in against Belgium.

He already has. Claudio was only good because at the time, he was the lone ranger for the US at that area of the field.
I love this series, I’d only suggest that after every role you give honorable mentions to that role that didn’t quite make it.

As for this list, the USMNT up until Berthalter played a 4-4-2. So, not sure shoe-horning a 4-3-3 really puts the Legendary Best XI out there. Also, not sold (yet) on Dest or Adams. Not enough caps, and especially in Dest's case, based mostly on hype. I do like the love Filippo shows both Jermaine Jones and Fabian Johnson though.
His squad also undervalues players from before 2002. Maybe not Filippo's fault, that is almost 20 years ago now. Here's my 11 using a 4-4-2:

You're literally starting 2 defenders. I'd love the Dest/Beasley wing pairing in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, but you can't leave your CB's on that much of an island.

I love Eddie Pope!!!! I think Charlie Davies would have been great in this team. I feel he would be a better fit than McBride. We do lack a real striker though. I am hesitant to put Dest and McKennie on this list "YET". I could make an argument in 5 years that our entire Senior Squad will be the best at their positions. I don't think Howard is overtaken and maybe not Beasley yet, but I see Gio replacing his Dad or Donovan. Dempsey is a toss up especially being our 9. So the future looks good.

McKinnie is already the most able player ever for the USMNT at CAM, but Dest will never be as good as Cherundolo, Beasley or Johnson. Johnson was better in the back AND raiding forward on either side of the pitch than Dest will ever be on Dest's natural right side. Just to clarify, I think that Dest is a good choice in this pool and isn't a joke at Barcelona when I've watched. He just isn't Johnson or Beasley, and never will be.
Adams is good but I don't think he has the accomplishments to suggest he's good enough to fulfill that role as a #6. At his age, you are picking him mostly on hope rather than success or ability. Certainly peak Michael Bradley was better player than Adams is now. If you go back to say that 2014 game versus Holland, even though that's a friendly, Bradley looks like a player that would start for either team. Or if not Bradley then maybe Thomas Dooley (1. FC Kaiserslautern was at the time in the Bundesliga). Adams is great, and I do think maybe one day peak Adams will be at a higher level than peak Bradley, but that peak Adams is in the future (we hope).
The same sense that you are picking a player on hope feels true to me of Dest. When has Dest exhibited skill over even a single season. At most he's a player whose had a few flashes but whose star seems to be falling at the moment. You mention Fabian Johnson, but you don't mention Steve Cherundolo who holds the record for the most starts in the Bundesliga, piloted his team Hannover 96 to promotion to the Bundesliga, and held the captaincy of that team for its long run at the top division, took them to Europe with a 4th place finish in 2011/2012 and who is so well regarded in Hannover that his nickname is "The Major of Hannover". You are telling me Dest has done more to convince you of his international quality already? Let's let him put together at least one complete season first!
Pulisic and McKinney I think are reasonable choices despite the young age.
I know I sound like an old duffer thinking that older players are overlooked, but by picking a team of players that aside from a few undeniable legends like Reyna, Beasley, Donovan and Dempsey consists of players from the current era you sound really young.
@Josh McCarty That game against the Portugal was the coaches fault, not Bradley's. Before the game, even the TV commenters noted that Bradley had ran more miles in the first game than any other player in the tournament. And in that heat Bradley had kept up that pace in the Portugal game - again to success, motor has value. But it's the coaches job to realize that you have player with jelly legs and make the appropriate substitutions. Everyone watching the TV could see Bradley was completely gassed. The coach did nothing. All JK had to do was make conservative substitutions and we would have won that game. It didn't require great coaching.
I agree with most of this. Yes, Bradley had his WTF moments but there are many more moments of brilliance (goal at Azteca, goal against Slovenia, performances vs. Mexico in Dos a Cero games). If the US needed a goal Bradley, Dempsey, and Donovan were the ones ppl looked to for it. And I would put Dooley over John Brooks.
Right now, I'd settle for Adams being healthy and available for the majority of our WCQ. He clearly cannot be replaced - which is as much an indictment of our depth (and coaching) as it is Adams' talent. I am very concerned his injuries will eventually make him John O'Brien 2.0.

The kids from now have the highest celling that I have seen in the last 50 years, except for Brooks, Dempsey and Howard which to me still the best we had at their position. Friedel, Perez, Harkes, Ramos, Donovan, Pope, Balboa Reyna and Wynalda would definitely be in the team.

With all due respect to Claudio "Captain America" Reyna, without a doubt.
No one in our history was so clutch or so good at elevating the play of everyone around him. He was the definition of a playmaker and an on the pitch Field Marshall, and he never once missed a penalty kick in the entire time he took them for the team.
As much as Claudio was the original "Captain America" and helped carry the USMNT for years...I'd put a healthy O'Brian in the XI ahead of him.
As others have commented I'd start Dolo as the RB over Dest....at least at the moment. I feel Dest will eventually be our best RB...but he's not there yet.
Love the inclusion of Eddie Pope....he's often overlooked by people who never saw him play.
Bradley is a coin flip for me....Yes he had a great career, but I think he'll be surpassed in the very near future.

I remember him having like an 80+ completed pass percentage and a high pass percentage in the final third against then no.1 Spain and pretty much everyone else including germany and others. Plus he scored some insane bangers like that scotland goal. So yes prime bradley is easily better than adams now though adams has a much higher ceiling..

My memory could be inflating his value but I don't think so. I'll take Cherundlo over Dest. As Dest matures, perhaps he will surpass Cherundolo...maybe surpass him by far but he isn't there yet. An Pope won't have to cover Cherundolo's defensive weaknesses.

Tough choice in goal, but I would have gone with Friedel over Howard. He was your keeper in the 02 world cup, your best performance ever on the biggest stage.
Off any positive sample of nat'l team play: Friedel; Beasley, Brooks, Pope, Dolo; Adams, Bradley, Gio; Dempsey, McBride, Landon. Some of these jokers like Dest never has played well for the nat'l team when it mattered (small sample, but would be if he were good too). Heck, Pulisic's nat'l team career's been underwhelming if we're honest w/ ourselves.
Lots of recency bias in this list, but hard to blame you. In his prime, Beasley was a dangerous left wing. Then he lost his mojo and moved to left back, where he was only passable. That he started is testament to the USMNT's lack of depth at that position rather than Beasley's excellence. FJ is probably the most talented LB the US has fielded, but he didn't want to be there and it showed. For me, Lewis would start as he was consistent and reliable.
Cherundolo is the best right back and it's not close. Dest could one day surprass him, but that's projecting quite a bit. The best any right back in a US kit has performed, however, was Tony Sanneh during the 2002 WC. Dude rarely put a foot wrong.
And thank you, thank you, thank you for the Dempsey love! Whether from fans or managers, club or international, Deuce never seemed to get the credit he deserved. Maybe he was too brash and cocky for some, but if he hadn't had those traits, he never would've reached the heights he did.
More kudos for mentioning McBride. Brian always gave 100 percent and would've been the only pure striker/target.

This is a very good line up. No Mastroeni but also no Bradley and thank God for no Altidore. I would take Mastroeni over Bradley any time. Bradley had a tendency to get lazy and lose the ball which would turn into a goal for the opposition as in against Belgium.
