With eyes I cheat a little. By doing them first, you can splodge in the whites of the eyes, and then do a line for the pupil. Then, block the skin around the eyes. If you do the eyes second, you kinda need to try not to hit the skin you've spent time painstakingly painting, a much harder prospect imho. There's some other options... for tiny eyes in an army, you can get away with an off-white followed by a dark black wash, which gives enough shadow to give the brain "these are eyes" at a distance and kinda fudges the concept of a pupil. That's also possible. I sometimes do this for grunts, but never for characters (unless they're a caster whose eyes are deliberately being glowy)
Thats smart. I usually do the eyes after the "base layers" of skin. Before shading and highlights. So somewhat of a in between. Lately I've been practicing to do very simple eyes, rather shading and colours with just a dot of white at the end. So far it looks a bit weird close up but alright from a distance.
Try to look at Vince Venturella's video about speed painting base coats - and dont get fooled by the title of the video, it is more about wet blending and sketching.
I love your videos! Keep them coming :) One of my favorite things to do is layer paint skin tones. I find that watercolor paints add an extra level of unpredictable-chaos and excitement to the process ;)
Thank you for the great video! I really liked your use of graphics(?) when explaining the gradient. Also, I have never thought about using my thumb as a place to compare highlight mixtures by having an ongoing gradient but that is brilliant. I have only used my thumb to test the consistency of the paint before applying it but now I'll have another use for it as well :-)
Great video! I'm just about to start painting the Lord of Plagues (lots of skin). I really liked the explanation about the shade color and why you dont start with that color!
I'm glad it helps! I will be delving more into the subject in my next video, hopefully up on friday. It will be about greenskins but with the same aproach, although even more exadurated.
I used to paint skin in layers...and it is time consuming. I now use the airbrush for painting skin and it is super fast. But to be honest, the brush painted skin i much more "strking"...in lack of a better word
In this video I think it’s a fresh, cheap, “no brand” synthetic brush. Lately I’ve been using expensive sable hair brushes.... at the moment I’m liking expensive “natural hair” brushes more because they don’t wear out as fast, and are easier to keep clean (personal opinion). So in the long run they become cheaper than the cheap brushes.
I got into this hobby to late in life. Vision is less than perfect, hands less than steady. Anyway I dont o much with the eyes. One of the best set of eyes ive done rescently was more accident than intentional. I sort of accidentally, almost perfectly AVOIDED the eyes. They ended up just kind of off white. Most times I just make a very thin wash to darken the area.
Yeah, eyes are a thing.. I mean, in theory, the mini's are so small that it would kind of be weird if one actually could see their pupils. But it's one of those challenges I guess :)
great video. Love that you speak more fluent and not so choppy. Makes it so much more nice to listen to. Love this channel
Im glad you like this better :) I took your comment into account while editing. Stay safe!
They look awesome. I really like your style of painting.
Thank you! Cheers!
I dunno why but I laughed out loud when you just blended into your own skin-tone. Good delivery.
Thanks F! I was kind of surprized there... couldn't even se the paint on my finger.
09:30 what also could have played a roll is that wet light paint looks brighter than when it's dry.

I'll have a look T, thanks!

watercolour huh! never tried that :) Thanks!
Really helpful video. I’m going to try this out
Go for it Richard! It's great training. And if your a patient person it might even be fun :)
When you matched your own skin tone I've lost it hahahaha
Very unpractical but pretty amazing :)

Tack Buster. Yeah my recorded explanation was quite messy.. so I opted for graphics. Im glad they worked out alright. Thumbs up!
Really nice explanation and video.
Thanks! 🙏

I'm kind of into time consuming it seems :)
I was too, until I got an airbrush.
Wandering why you chose to not do a zenithal highlight to not need so many layers?
Ah, because I wanted to practice "layering" :)
Thanks for your videos, they're inspiring me to try more techniques! Although I won't be getting a cat 😂
Ha ha! Mine is actually pretty chill. He doesn’t mess up the hobby table or eat brushes at least :)
Great vídeo. What brush do you use?

Great flesh tutorial. But you are doing your eyes the wrong way around. Do black first and then paint white in the corners.
