A Really superb review Pete, love the editing particularly the beginning, the voice over section works well, plenty of expertly considered information, plus your effortless delivery - this is your best review to date. As for the car, the interior looks to be top drawer the styling very well resolved. From this review it looks to me like Audi and petrolped have moved the game on somewhat. Great work.
Cheers Roger. That's kind of you to say. As you know, because you do it too, you always need to try and improve your editing skills with each video ;-)
My neighbour recently bought a new Polo (R Line). It's so big I thought it was a Golf until I looked round the back and saw Polo. The ride height is pure comedy. I'm sure a small child could stick their head between the wheel and the arch. This A1 looks very nice indeed.
Great review Peter, the A1's always been a bit on the pricy side but this one does now look worth the money - As long as you keep the options sensible that is!!!
A pleasure to watch this review Pete, your calm but informative and honest style stands out from the many I have watched lately. The A1 35 Sport looks like the one to go for to me, and the virtual cockpit really appeals alongside the other refinements brought in by Audi to the already much improved Polo (certainly when compared to the 8 year old version I am driving). Just waiting for the 2nd hand prices to drop a little more and then I look forward to sampling the balance and feel that you have described so very well.
Really nice distinctive small Audi that is light years better looking than the opposition and has a premium feel to match the premium badge. RS1 with 350 bhp pleaeeeese🙏
I’m looking forward for my new 20 plate 1.5 engine . Hopefully it be ready to collect sometime March 2020. I know it’s pricey but I like the interior and it’s the right size for me .
Like the look of that. I've had a couple of the old shape A1's as hire cars and they were huge amount of fun. Agree with the comment on Audi making an RS1, that would be like a rocket.Really good review, Audi will need to give you more models to review in the future hopefully.
Terrific review!! Into volume sorts the sound levels out before a call comes in or if Sat nave wants to start talking to you. Kind of nice. Had it as standard on a new Mondeo titanium x couple years ago.
The interior is posh proper modern itd be cool to see the new S1 👀 Thankyou for explaining the numbers on the back seen loads of Audi’s with and was clueless now I know Keep it up mate👍🏻
Blommin heck, when you started off saying it was well spec'd and I saw the s-line seats I was thinking £18-20K. £21K as a starting point, you could buy an A3 for that money!
But isn't that true now of every premium badge and even some less than premium have you specc'd a fiesta lately, you can get them way into the mid 20's, mini one with decent wheels is over 20k and just seen BMW 1 series 1.5 with wheels and msport pack nearly 29k. I'm not saying this is a good thing but if people are going to moan about it don't just pick on one brand, they all do it. The new A class can get up to nearly 40k before you get to the large engine AMG's!
@@Gez492 Maybe. I guess with how these cars have grown in size you need to look at cars like the VW Up if you actually want a super mini at a more reasonable cost. People will spend their money how they want but in my opinion there are far better cars to spend it on than a £30K A1.
If people are willing to spend £30k on a small non-sporty car so be it. I'd be interested to see what the real price is in a few months through someone like Car Wow. There is a presumption that "Prestige" car makers can add £5k to the MRP without qualms. A fully specced 5 door Fiesta ST3 is around £24 MRP, and I know which I'd rather have.
Pete, VW Polo GTi Plus pack DSG, well spec'd for less than £25k far better value and performance -provided you can get one inside 10 months delivery lead-time. UPGTi at half the price of this model and probably much more fun as a daily . Other option Seat Ibiza FR Sport with DSG. £20k
30k for a car with a 1.0 3 cylinder engine, wheels look like something you could buy from Halfords back in the day and you don't even get gas struts for the bonnet!! 😲😲😲... Madness
The 40tfsi is terrific, it may not look that impressive in today's world where sub 5s 0-60 times are becoming common but not long ago 200bhp and 6.5a would have been leading hot hatch performance. In a small-ish car it's plenty and the 40tfsi can be either a playful blast, a sensible urban car or handle long motorway drives.
Hi Ped Great review yet again. Loved the styling, colour combination & interior. Have to be very careful with option list if buying new, but this car could be interesting when it comes off demo plan.
I’m sat here trying to imagine it without the extra £12K worth of extras Peter, even with £6K worth of extras. At £18K price point it sounds reasonable for its class but it wouldn’t draw me into a showroom to take a look. Space in the boot could be increased if the rear sets are folded, hmm so where do the kids sit ? On a more positive note the interior looks nice (in this fully spec’d model), ambient lighting - where have we seen that before ? Oh MINI has been doing it forever. The drivetrain wouldn’t be for me but an RS version ? Umm, now that might just pull me into the showroom. As an aside, my brother in law has one of the previous A1’s, it’s horrible. Great , honest review as always. It’s going to appeal to some but not me. Cheers Geof
We had one of the very early A1's years ago, 11 plate. It was nothing like as good as a Mini to drive but the interior was superb. I like Audi and my current car is an A6 but even as an Audi fan find some of the options they try and push silly.
Well done...Your reviews just keep getting better and better I also love the way in which you've edited the video together, brilliant piece of work. Daft comment to make but I'm picking up tips for my videos. They may not be car related but good tips all the same. Your need Mrs Petrol Ped driving in front of you for your next review with a Go Pro attached to the rear of her car for those overtaking shots lol that's if Mrs Petrol Ped will allow Mr Petrol Ped to over take. 🤣 Take care and look forward to more of your excellent content to come.
This new model looks a lot better than the first gen imo, i can see what you about the rs look of the thing, just need audi to make a proper full fat model now.
Not sure if this car is available in the states or not. But what i didn't like is Audi to me is that classy car with a tiger hidden under the hood (bonnet) and i don't see that here. Unless you spend a lot of money for a bigger engine. But it's an Audi and they are a bucket list car for me. Keep up the good n honest reviews
I just bought a Seat Ibiza FR 115 for nearly half the price of that Audi which is based on the Audi. It has most of the equipment plus a sunroof and gorgeous cherry red paint. I would hope Audi have improved sound deadening as my Ibiza suffers terrible tyre roar and wind noise at speed.
Top review yet again. If I was a manufacturer or dealer, you would be first on my list to invite for a demo. Quality reviews every time. 🙌 Audi have a great line up at the moment and the standards and spec right through the range are fantastic. As with most makes - the spec options are over complicated and you find yourself spec’ing a smaller car to a price point equivalent to a car two sizes up in the range. And then you cut back on the spec and later regret dropping the option that saved you a few £00. First world problems.
I’m getting one in Manhattan grey. It’s not the standard edition it’s sport. It’s got a rear parking sensor. What I’m wondering is does it have Bluetooth?
I'm assuming your top you wore is also Turbo Blue too? ;-))... Was it worn as a pure coincidence or did you ask for the blue Audi? And...You answered it at 8:19 into the video. DOH me!! :-\... Moral of this story? Watch the whole frigging video before making comments Zanzi... :-))... Shame this A1 wasn't a 70 TFSI. Regardless of the cars size, I bet you'd have liked it even more if it was!? :-))... It's a very stylish car, both outside and interior. Great review as usual Pete! Interestingly, when you go to configure one on the Audi website, there's still only the one engine option available........I guess the other engines will be available in the coming months
A very nicely made video Pete. You've upped things again. The usual detailed and informative review. I'm neither an Audi or small car fanboy but I really think Audi have nailed things with this A1. I can see the stealing many sales off them current Mini range. As for the £30k price tag, it doesn't surprise me and I'd imagine that most owners of a brand new one will tickets a good many of those options you listed as it probably only adds £20 or £30 to the monthly PCP.
Cool looking from the front. Okay looking from the back. Stupid looking form the side. I prefer my first gen A1, and when the time comes to by a new car I think I go for an Audi 80 convertible, like Diana :D
Nice looking car and great interior.Must admit I prefer the old S1.Not to keen on the none honey comb grill style.Yes thirty thousand pound for a 118ps car is a bit steep.part from that it’s ok if your not a petrolhead mate.
thanks for review of the engine power destinations i was wondering about that ...... was just about to message you about the the said engine designations numbering before viewing the video you read my mind ..... love the videos keep it up ps why do you wear your watch on your right wrist are left handed?
It looks a good car but I can’t justify the price. I have a 2018 polo gti with quite a few options on it and paid £24k and I don’t think it’s worth an extra £6k over my car?
Similar levels of electronics are in pretty much every new car these days. I'm not sure they will be any more prone to issues then the systems they replace.
Pedro. Sadly no A1 imported into the USA. I used to own an Audi A3 hatch back diesel. Best interior of any car I have owned. However it was part of the VW Diesel emissions scandal. Sold it back to Audi 18 months ago at the pre scandal price plus a $7,5000 penalty. Went out and bought a Mini S cash the next weekend. So VW owns the Audi brand. I have to admit I am a bit cautious about buying a VW product again. I am a former Touareg owner and it was riddled with constant problems, but it did have a fantastic engine and driving feel. I love the look of the A1 but would probably not consider it based on past experience with the brand. Just my opinion.
You hit the nail on the head with the tablets stuck on the dash, albeit that dash is very similar to the Polo (not entirely a bad thing) and wish they had kept the iconic round vents instead of a total redesign. Great review, thanks.
Thank you for sharing a thorough review, those virtual cockpits look outstanding, sadly though as hard as I try I just can’t get drawn into liking Audi’s car designs .... I really want to .... sigh, but no
nothing Audi will do, like vents between the bonnet/bumper, will ever grace the original & best Audi...the S1! Even the new "S1" didn't give it justice as in a different league
sounded quite noisy to me... lots of engine noise/road noise especially, unless its where you mounted your microphone, you seemed to be raising your voice to compensate ????
Finlay Downham-White The Fabia is a very good car for the money. Comfy, reliable and good engines. Badge snobs will hate it though. Ive had new Skoda and Audi, and to be honest the Audi was all very nice but not good enough for the premium price tag and after a while I disliked the perceived image it had and the way others looked at me. Im not arrogant or a show off so it was the wrong car for me in the end. Plenty of these A1s will be leased so that the drivers can show off to their workmates. If thats what makes you happy, you must be lacking in confidence and have a very empty sad life if you need a certain brand of car to boost your ego. Nobody is really interested
Nice looking car but... 6:39... £30k...!! That's almost Honda Civic Type R money and I know which one I would get. BTW you would fit in the back of the Type R easily too! (long legs and all)
Another very enjoyable, highly professional, road test and a lovely car but far too overpriced when you can buy a 190 HP Mercedes A series hatch 220 4MATIC AMG Line for £30,245. (a possible replacement for Ruby?)
So basically the A1 is just a Polo with the Audi logo and some ambient interior lighting. Why does this A1 cost 10k more than the new Polo, what am I missing?
I like the Audi quality and look but struggle to see it as a £30k car, depreciation will be pretty low as well. I think a polo would be a better buy and for that money you could have a polo GTI. So the question is your buying a new car either this A1 or Polo Gti
BMW owner here. Audi do make the slickest looking cars, however 30K is absurd for a 1.0 3 cylinder hatchback. How much life are you going to get out of a small engine like this that requires constant wringing to keep up with traffic? 30K for the RS version (if one were to ever exist) would be a lot more tempting. You can get a Fiesta ST for something like 20K! This thing is just a fashion statement.
Small turbos and hybrids are sadly here to stay I think. Just look at the engine in the i8 ;-) It really doesn't feel strained when you are driving it.
@@PetrolPed Oh I agree, emissions laws and petrol prices and all that. Just thinking about longevity! We live in a throwaway society though, everything's gotta be replaced every year or two!
@@PetrolPed ...I don't mean to me personally, I mean in future videos , if you point out to people your height as your doing your limbo dancing.....lol
Nice review and nice looking car, particularly in this colour but a couple of things I don't like-no 'flappy paddles' and the appearance of the exterior paint on the inside of the door frames makes it look cheap. Our current A3 has this covered although the new A3 also goes down this route. This combined with the harder cheaper plastics in these latest lower range Audis is a disappointment, considering the price. Also needs the 1.5 litre 4 cylinder petrol.
The A1? Which is now the size of an A3. As for the new engine size designations... ! Oh dear. The grill running along the edge of the bonnet look pretty weird. Great interior though!
£30k for an A1! Makes my RS3 look like a bargain.... Audi do take the piss on the options list although they will discount the price considerably if you play hardball. Unfortunately for me my Mrs has taken a shine to the facelift A1...…..
Nice, but very complicated, and,l suspect, will be subject to myriad electrical problems, especially as the car ages. Also very pricey,so it should be good really! Also, will the dealers be able to service it!Hmm..
The only audi I could afford. Having a VW or Honda is nothing fancy, but having an Audi is a dream.
4 years ago! You already had it right! 👌 Great little car as well! Cheers! Tom

Thanks for a good interview! I think if one tuner up the engine to about 40 hp. more, you will notice the difference in such a light car.

@@PetrolPed Last three cars have been Jag as I couldn't see beyond the BMW and Merc dash fail. Disco might be the next one.
You hit the nail on the head with the tablets stuck on the dash, albeit that dash is very similar to the Polo (not entirely a bad thing) and wish they had kept the iconic round vents instead of a total redesign. Great review, thanks.
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Thank you for sharing a thorough review, those virtual cockpits look outstanding, sadly though as hard as I try I just can’t get drawn into liking Audi’s car designs .... I really want to .... sigh, but no
Keep trying ;-)
Petrol Ped I am honest... my wife will vouch for that 🙄
nothing Audi will do, like vents between the bonnet/bumper, will ever grace the original & best Audi...the S1! Even the new "S1" didn't give it justice as in a different league
I don't disagree but it's a nice gesture ;-)
Nice car....2 much £££££!!! Rs1 yes please! Just not 40k lol! Great review btw!
Cheers 👍
sounded quite noisy to me... lots of engine noise/road noise especially, unless its where you mounted your microphone, you seemed to be raising your voice to compensate ????
It wasn't too noisy. My mics always pick up a bit more road noise.
Really not sure about the styling of this car, looks like a poncy skoda fabia
Ouch 😂
Take it you don’t like Skoda’s then 🥴
Finlay Downham-White The Fabia is a very good car for the money.
It’s just an overpriced car for badge snobs.
Nice looking car but... 6:39... £30k...!!
That's almost Honda Civic Type R money and I know which one I would get.
BTW you would fit in the back of the Type R easily too! (long legs and all)
I’ve reviewed a couple of them. Great cars 👍
Hi,
I have a question, If you don't put the virtual cockpit as an optional, can you still change the view like radio, consumes, etc.???
I thought VC was standard not an option 🤔
@@PetrolPed according to the web site seems like it is an optional🤷
Another very enjoyable, highly professional, road test and a lovely car but far too overpriced when you can buy a 190 HP Mercedes A series hatch 220 4MATIC AMG Line
for £30,245. (a possible replacement for Ruby?)
Possible, but I'll be after a little more performance than that so maybe the A45 ;-)
Keep u[p the good work
DES Waterford Ireland
Des O'Brien Hello Waterford from Manchester! My favourite place to be, great county, great country!
Hi Des 👋
@@thomasmurphy3603 Not today it is raining.
During your test drive how economical was the 1.0 3 pot engine, real world vs manufacturer's stated mpg?
Not great...low 20s but I was having fun !
@@PetrolPed Crikey, low 20s for a 1.0 !! But at least you were having fun :-)
So basically the A1 is just a Polo with the Audi logo and some ambient interior lighting. Why does this A1 cost 10k more than the new Polo, what am I missing?
It's an Audi ;-)
Good review and video, rather expensive
Agreed 😬
I like the Audi quality and look but struggle to see it as a £30k car, depreciation will be pretty low as well. I think a polo would be a better buy and for that money you could have a polo GTI. So the question is your buying a new car either this A1 or Polo Gti
I don’t buy new cars 😜
After three years this car will be worth less than £10k as a trade in.
@@chrisabbott683 2 years later and it’s still roughly the same price
BMW owner here. Audi do make the slickest looking cars, however 30K is absurd for a 1.0 3 cylinder hatchback. How much life are you going to get out of a small engine like this that requires constant wringing to keep up with traffic? 30K for the RS version (if one were to ever exist) would be a lot more tempting. You can get a Fiesta ST for something like 20K! This thing is just a fashion statement.
Small turbos and hybrids are sadly here to stay I think. Just look at the engine in the i8 ;-)
It really doesn't feel strained when you are driving it.
@@PetrolPed Oh I agree, emissions laws and petrol prices and all that. Just thinking about longevity! We live in a throwaway society though, everything's gotta be replaced every year or two!
The road noise on the video sounded terrible. Was it that bad in person?
Lovely
197bhp! Wow. I did wonder about the 3.0 diesel lump in it lol.
😂😂😂
Its a bit pricey, but as you pointed out, it is a special place to be. I guess you pay for what you get.
How much is the Suzuki Swift Sport again?
Good point. That was a great little car 👍
would be handy for people when talking about room in the back if you gave your height, helps people decide on the amount of room ect..............
Sorry, I'm 6'3" with 35" inside leg :-)
@@PetrolPed ...I don't mean to me personally, I mean in future videos , if you point out to people your height as your doing your limbo dancing.....lol
love the look of it but them wheels.dam ill change them straight away.
They are a bit Marmite :-)
Nice review and nice looking car, particularly in this colour but a couple of things I don't like-no 'flappy paddles' and the appearance of the exterior paint on the inside of the door frames makes it look cheap. Our current A3 has this covered although the new A3 also goes down this route. This combined with the harder cheaper plastics in these latest lower range Audis is a disappointment, considering the price. Also needs the 1.5 litre 4 cylinder petrol.
Glad you enjoyed the review 👍
Nice car but the price does not add up, given I paid just under 37k for my brand new S3 3 years back!
I really like it though it’s a bit pricy mate maybe wait a year & get a nearly new yin!👍
Good idea 👍
The A1? Which is now the size of an A3. As for the new engine size designations... ! Oh dear. The grill running along the edge of the bonnet look pretty weird. Great interior though!
Where's the steering wheel paddles ?
No paddles on this model. You can still manually change with the gear lever :-)
Does it have parking assistance?
Yes, Park Assist is an option 👍
Run the titles , Then back to the studio !!
There is something wrong with the styling, it makes the rear wheels look smaller than the fronts. The rear three quarter design looks too chunky
£30k for an A1! Makes my RS3 look like a bargain.... Audi do take the piss on the options list although they will discount the price considerably if you play hardball. Unfortunately for me my Mrs has taken a shine to the facelift A1...…..
Oops...get saving 👍
Nice, but very complicated, and,l suspect, will be subject to myriad electrical problems, especially as the car ages. Also very pricey,so it should be good really! Also, will the dealers be able to service it!Hmm..
For americans, 30k GBP equals around 38k USD... For a Audi A1.... Y I K E S
