Your friend might be sensitive because of how sexist the Philippines is. It's still pretty bad even in 2018. Job interviews are like first dates, resumes require pictures/headshots, good jobs are literally reserved for men (job listing will say 'must be: Male, age 25-35, etc., and entry-level jobs will say 'Femaly, unmarried, under 25, no children, must be Catholic', etc.). Even a call center job requires pictures.. I worked in one there. Philippines is still very "traditional".

For those offended, consider this. Intelligence and language are 2 separate things. Just because one has an accent or makes a few grammar errors, it doesn't necessarily denote intellectual inferiority. When I go to Pilipinas, I have a Canadian accent when I speak Tagalog + I make mistakes but does it mean I'm less intelligent? No. The only way to be offended by this is if you think having an accent means you somehow are less intelligent. That's just incorrect. The world loves our unique accent!
I think you are wrong. I think it's incredible that anyone can speak multiple languages. When someone has an accent like that, I think, WOW, they can speak my language as a second!!!!!! I feel like they are more intelligent than average.

@@saenznitfros5365 Culturally you're very latino-like. The influence Spain and the United States had over Philippines is very similar to the one they had over Mexico and Latin America. In fact in the US where Latinos and Filipinos immigrants coincide there is a lot of social intermixing between Filipinos and Latinos.
@@saenznitfros5365 Also during the colonies (about 250 years in our history) Mexico served as a commercial intermediary between Asia (through Las Filipinas) and Europe, causing much cultural interchange between both regions of the New Spain (Now Mexico and Phillipines). I wouldn't be surprised if there is even Mexican descendants in the Phillipines (and viceversa).

When I was growing up I spent all day with my Phillipino nanny so I learned to speak with her accent. My parents didn't mind, they thought it was cute. When I was eventually old enough to go to school, the school was very worried that I would give the other kids an accent, so they made me go to speech therapy.

The mainstreams would be
Malay-spiced accent, Indian-spiced accent, Chinese-spiced accent (in Chinese there are some influenced by either Cantonese/Hokkien/Teochew/Hakka/Hock Chew etc. LOL).
And don't forget other accent like Siamese accent, and other natives' accent. Each of every sounded quite distinctive different =O

nyatio This is exaggerated. Think of how people exaggerate the valley girl accent from California. For those who went to college, the accent is there but it is not as pronounced and explicit.
Tagalog dramas often include "rich" characters who knows good English. Filipino artists also speak English very well, which is very misleading in terms of portrayal of legit "Filipino English".

I also enjoy the commercials in the Philippines they are really relaxing to watch, some of the commercials i still search them here on youtube. It's so nice to open your television and watch Filipino channels instantly with tons of awesome commercials. I'm relying on the internet now i'm back in the Netherlands. 0_0 oh my gosh. Mikey's Canadian accent scares me because I'm so used to his Pinoy accent. My Lolo passed away a year and a half ago and I've missed TFC and Showtime, etc., and just the accent and presence of another Filipino. My dad's side is white, and my Lolo was the only Filipino relative that I saw often and he was my excuse to watch TFC 😆 Anyway, your content ceases to dwindle in quality, as your F-I-L-I-P-I-N-O once again exceeded expectations. Anyway, bless you (if I were there, I would mano) and keep up the good work!

The filipino accent is a highly neutral accent that makes it easy for students to learn. Aside from proper vowel and consonant sound emphasis, Fililipino English at a typical speed. And Filipino accent is warm and understandable.
I'm an English Teacher here in Philippines & I'm very impressed with your Filipino Accent Tutorial. This is the simplest and the most entertaining way of explaining the distinction between Filipino accent and American accent. I find it very useful in speech classes because you've identified some of the major weaknesses of a native Filipino speaking the English language. in order to be fluent and proficient to the 2nd language these weaknesses should be corrected. I highly recommend this video!

I know this video is from 9 years ago, but it amazes me that you were BORN in Canada, and still able to have a strong Pinoy Accent. I was 4 when I moved to the U.S, but I was never able to learn much Tagalog or the Dialects.

I could speak like this and with an American accent too :) some Filipinos graduated or not, speak like this naturally! haha others do it intentionally just for fun, haha i can say our tongue is so soft enough to change quickly :) not in all cases though :) cause i know most of the people in the Phil have a strong accent :D

I'm just falling down a rabbit hole of different accents tonight and (as weird as it sounds) I've never noticed how cool it is to hear all the different ways people talk lol! I really enjoyed watching this video :D
Well... I prefer to have this accent than to have nothing at all... Most of the students nowadays can't even speak English fluently regardless with the accent, and one thing is more traumatic, they even laugh at it if some of their classmates or friends can't pronounce a word correctly. What is accent anyway if you can't even speak English as straight as this? Sir Mikey Bustos thank you for this video again. I'm gonna show this to my "Teaching of Speaking" class so that my students will have an realization that its not about the accent, its about the fluency and mastery of using English Language.

I'm Filipino and have a Brit accent. Surprisingly, I grew up in Manila. You have to blame having too much British friends and Brit TV for that.
I suppose that's the reason why some of the upper class speak with an American accent too. They pick up their English from TV so that's the way they speak.
That's just my opinion, anyway.

I remember my Grandma/Lola telling me about stuff like not pronouncing F's or mixing up with he/she!
I wouldn't say that the confusion of V and B with Filipinos has anything to do with Spanish influence, although different accents among Spanish and Portuguese do that too. It's because native Filipino words don't have a native V sound. Same with F and P, no native F sound. This is with exception of speakers of Ifugao and possibly other Filipino languages with the F and/or V sound.
You'll also find that Filipinos do the opposite, pronouncing B as V. And will often pronounce a T and the end of a word as TH. So the word BAT can sound like VATH. Portuguese from Portugal do this too. Visayans and Ilocanos tend to pronounce E, as it is pronounced in the word WEST, as I. So 'west' can sound like 'weest.' Ilocanos have an E sound but its not pronounced like E in WEST. It sounds somewhere in between E and UH.
Also, F is not always, dare I say, not often pronounced as a full hard P. It's generally pronounced somewhere in between. Instead of using their top row of teeth and blowing out to make the F sound they use their top lips and blow.
Also words beginning with S followed by a consonant are pronounced sometimes with and extra E. Not likely due to Spanish influence either, even though it is a common thing for Spanish speakers. It is however common among Chinese-speakers, Arabic-speakers, Amharic-speakers and possibly Portuguese (specifically Brazilian)-speakers as well. So "snowflake" in a very heavy Filipino accent would be 'esnowplake."
Other things
J is often DZ. And U is often A. So 'Jungle' is 'dzang-gole."
CH is TS. So "Thank you very much" is "Teng-q bery mahts."
SH is just S. So "He's going to the fiesta with a hundred empanadas." is "Sis going to da piyesta wid a handred empanadas,' keeping in mind that "sis" is "she's" with the gender confusion applied.

To expand on what you said about how the ilokanos enunciate their "e" sounds, they actually pronounce it as a /ə/
(schwa) sound. This is a sound used in most english words like "tricycle" /tricycəl/, "mother" /mothər/, and "father" /fathər/. They're one of the filipino ethnicities that still have a /ə/ sound in their vocabulary. In tagalog, the /ə/ sound merged with /i/ which is why they pronounce words like "tricycle" as "traysikil". The cebuanos, on the other hand, merged their /ə/ sound with the /o/ sound which is why they pronounce "tricycle" as "traysikol".
Example:
Tagalog - dikit
Cebuano - dukut
Ilokano - dəkət

This video of Mikey was used before on my first BPO job as a trainee. I'm glad that i watched this video and learned to distuingish filipino-english accent.
I am a Bisaya and our accent is even thicker than Tagalog many of us pronounce uncle as ang-kool but at least we have wife (asawa) and husband (bana). Tagalog don't have husband (bana) only wife (asawa) that woman in Manila call their husband wife.
In Philippines there are a lot of accents that we use to depends on dialect you speak.. Most of ofw's which is they become the face of the Philippines around the world they are came from visayas or other provinces that is very tough to speak but when you are really from manila (tagalog people) their tongue is very soft to pronounce they speak english very well! So accent is depend from dialect!

Actually, now that I am a communications coach teaching neutral english to my fellow Filipinos, I realize that your Filipino accent is real. Apart from No V, F, Th sounds, even the missing "T" from some words (like in fact) is spot on. Also short i for long e sounds (spik vs speak). Also the missing articles (visit Philippines vs visit the Philippines). Also interchanging he and she. And the sing-songy intonation is also correct. This is of course not true for all Filipinos. But it is true that a lot of Filipinos have that accent. Mikey Bustos shows it in an entertaining way but it is true. Not trying to insult my own race of course. Just stating the facts. Anyways, having an accent is natural unless you really want to pursue saying the english words correctly.

Joe S. Sorry to have it sound all wrong. What I mean is that, I know how to speak english in either american or british accent. And, excuse me, but I'm not pretending on anything. English is also an official language here in the Philippines, and a lot of people can do what I can.

what i don't like about some of my fellow Filipinos is that they over-learn and overuse English because they think that it is much superior than their own native language. colonial mentality still exist in this country. I haven't saw any English-speaking TV show with a Tagalog subtitle yet, only dubbed. The one Bustos portrayed is the authentic, usual accent of most Filipinos (don't they ever deny it!) but some still varies in every region. Why would some are super hurt when they cannot accept the real fact? We should never have to over-enunciate the pronunciation because there is something in this world that exists, and it's called common sense. Use it! Also, I really hate it when some Filipinos claim they have a tiny percentage of a foreign blood even though they are totally of unmixed descent. I also hate the over-borrowing of Spanish words into our vocabulary so that it could fill-in the words that has no native equivalent. What's with that overrated language anyway? could we just purify our language and remove any Spanish residues in our vocabulary? I also hate it that the Spanish word they borrow becomes part of the "Filipino" vocabulary. claiming that all the words are native. If we will just borrow a word maybe they could make calques of neologisms. Could we just return some unimportant Spanish words in our vocabulary? we have more or less 5000 Spanish loanwords! that's too many! maybe we could retain 50 or less. It will not make a gap in our vocabulary, it will help it more!

Language is used to communicate. The most important thing is that we all understand each other. That is the main purpose of language. To express our feelings and share our thoughts. To strenghten our bonds we have with people around us. I'm not bothered by loanwords. I agree that we should not forget about our own language and cherish it well.

@bang mi, you cannot say uneducated Filipinos. Alam mo, kahit sino merong unique accents and pronunciation pagdating sa English. Ang mga Caucasian nagkakaiba dn, ang mga British nagkakaiba dn, so as French, Russian, Spanish and other types of people. Like yung mga itim nating brothers around US, they pronouce harrrddd.. Like, kids to keeeds, skill to skeeell. You know what I'm saying? Last example ang mga rasta here in US. They pronouce this as tis or dis, that as dat, and they have a very bad grammar but accepted here. There is no standard English, and there will never be. :)

When I'm in elementary that the way I speak English too because that was I hear to the people in the Philippines but when I am grade 6 my English teacher teach me how speak properly in English like proper pronouncing of English words...
This is so fun, bun forgive me for being very critical I think this accent is actually.... I hate to say but this accent is actually those of uneducated Filipinos. Not generally uneducated but those that might have a really terrible English skills with bad grammar and pronunciations. A Filipino person who speaks English fluently who didn't grow up abroad would still sound very accurate with the letters and still have an accent at the same time. They would use V, Ph, F, Th, correctly, the only thing that would set apart the Filipino accent to any other dialect is the tone of how they say it. Like for example the word, Condolence, US English speaker would say (it's hard to describe it through writing so forgive me) conDOlence that's how I would describe how it sounds in the US. In the Philippines Condolence would sound CONdolence. The UPPER CASE letters are emphasizing the higher tone of how they say it. I hope I made a sense lol

its not just "uneducated" Filipinos, its literally everyone. its also the same with the other countries, like the French for example. Its hard to explain but knowing how to say a word is different to actually saying it.. like I was raised in PH for only 5-6 years and my English is perfect but I still stutter when saying V PH F TH like you said. well by your logic of ur comments first 2 sentences, everyone from a non English speaking country is uneducated.

What I said was those filipinos that might have trouble with V PH F TH are those that are "UNEDUCATED" meaning those that didn't go to school and had time to learn English. I didn't say everyone from a non-English speaking country was uneducated that was totally a deranged notion. That's the reason why I said my comment is because if you come to the Philippines and listen to like, News reporters or something, they speak really good English in the Philippines they use the vowels and consonants perfectly yet still have a tone (Not an accent) of a Filipino and not western. Did you get my point yet?
But if you both are saying Filipinos who don't go to school pronounce like stiff in this video, then your results are kinda biased. Because that would be saying about 2/4 of the Philippines pronounce like this video. But not ALL undereducated Filipinos speak like that. It's because we kinda were born with this funny accent.
Nao Serex what do you mean undereducated? Did you mean uneducated? If so, well let me tell you I've never seen a Filipino person who didn't really study English that speaks it perfectly. Although I've met some Filipinos who try to put a western accent as they speak English to pretend as if English was their native language. Filipinos have really good ears. They can learn things just by hearing it although they still mess up the grammar even if they apply western accent with their speaking.
