Its within the options menu, there'll be a thing that says 'iteams'. And there, you can have the boy basically wear different clothes. And how you unlock the different outfits, is finding and feeding barrels to Trico! So the outfit with the hat is one of those types of things. :)

Hey ! It's an alternate outfit you can get on second playthrough by picking up enough barrels ;)
