I've used both Costa's and Oakley's and the Prizm feature for Oakley's wasn't mentioned in this video at all (PRIZM™ IS AN OAKLEY LENS TECHNOLOGY DESIGNED TO ENHANCE COLOR AND CONTRAST SO YOU CAN SEE MORE DETAIL) despite Prizm being available since 2014 this is not a gimmick and bright colors appear noticeably more vivid and colorful. Don't get me wrong I think both sunglasses are absolutely top of the line however, Prizm make a significant difference. Sure, glass is harder than polycarbonate making it harder to scratch but that doesn't mean it won't scratch and polycarbonate is many times more durable than glass. For example if you're using these glasses for marksmanship, ATV, sports or anything that may involve risk to your eyes, your eyes are incredibly more protected with polycarbonate lenses. (My friend was mowing a lawn with Costa's on and a rock hit his eye and shattered them opon impact, luckily it was just enough to stop the momentum of the Rock from doing any serious damage. He wears Oakleys now and with the most Oakley's being ballistic rated this is no longer an issue for him) With all of this being said if you have Oakley's without prism or aren't using these glasses for anything that involves safety for your eyes Costa's are superior. However if you're Oakley's do have Prism or you are wanting the most safety Oakley's are superior. if you take care of your glasses scratches should not be a problem and when it comes to eyes safety should be the first concern. Just to sum up. Oakleys with prizm are Superior on top of being lighter and being many times more durable. Drawback is that it scratch easier Costa's don't scratch as easily and they have a better warranty. Drawback is glass lenses are much more fragile than polycarbonate. PS. glass does not have more clarity than polycarbonate to the naked eye, they are simply a difference in material.
Hi Thanks for the comparison. I was comparing Oakley Prizm deep H2O vs Costa 580G blue mirror, they seem pretty close or I should say I cant notice a difference.. Any comments?
From what I understand, the deep H2O's are hard to use as a daily because of the colours they present when you're not on the water. The Costas do a great jobof colours and realism when you're not on the water as well.
Not a bad video. I like your honesty. Most of the other sunglass review videos are biased. Or are done by optical shops trying to sell product. Even the "one guy review videos"...they don't mention the pitfalls of the Oakley frames. What can happen over time. And Oakley's are expensive for plastic sunglasses. Their replacement lenses can cost around $130 (CDN) for their Prizm Polarized. Which I just ordered. With taxes...almost $150.00. Almost the cost of my Ray Ban New Wayferer's 58mm non-polarized. A more premium built pair. I am tempted to try Costa's. My gripe with Costa is their approach to R&D and marketing. All the lenses are polarized. That is their thinking. But according to some...there are times when you DON"T want polarized shades. Pilots will not wear polarized shades. Also polarized shades can affect the depth perception with some people...not everyone. Not me. I would have thought Costa would make non-polarized lensed sunglasses as well. Everyone else does.
Costa offers a "backed for life" warranty and for an $11.25 processing fee, will fix problems like that. Oakley charges a similar priced set of new pieces for $13.
Thats great but out of 7 pairs of Oakleys I never had to send them back. 200 dollar pair of glasses sent back once a year? Costas have a major problem with that rubber nose piece. I have a pair of Faintails on the way. We shall see if they fixed the problem.
steve4321able I haven't seen the problem pop up, but I've only had them a few months but in my opinion (and many others) the 580 g lense is far superior to anything Oakley offers
I can agree on that for sure. I will report back on the rubber nose piece. If I have problems I will saturate every post and let everyone know , including Costa about this ongoing problem. good review!
Great channel! Costa is junk. Glass is optically pure and more scratch resistant but you can’t beat the optically correct lens that Oakley makes. When it comes to impact and shatter proof resistency Oakley wins time and time again. Glass shatters and Oakley’s plutonite does not. They have prizm deep water and prizm shallow that’s not only lighter than costa but 100% safe and designed to help you see in shallow or deep water while fishing. They come out with new eyewear leashes this summer that you should check out. Costa is over priced, under engineered and capitalizing on a market that Oakley was late to get to. You said it KVD wears oakley so you know they’re good. He gets paid by oakley but I guarantee if oakley wasn’t paying KVD tomorrow he’d be wearing them because he knows the product works. Happy fishing!
Matt Cunha Oakleys are garbage lolz. All there lens are coated. Oakleys aka Luxottica outsources the manufacturing of their lens from China. The best polarization comes from Maui Jims.
Timothy Mui whatever helps you sleep at night bub! Maui is garbage glass, glue and filters. Good luck cleaning all those glass shards out of your eyes!
So, Costa is junk yet at the same time you say also optically pure and more scratch resistant? And what is "optically correct" supposed to mean? Of course polycarbonate is more shatter proof, with any brand, but remember, when you are wiping the saltwater spray, with your shirt, off of polycarbonate glasses you are also scratching the surface and rubbing the mirror off as well because the mirror is only a top finish - either Costa or Oakley. Costa mirror glass is encapsulated meaning there is a layer of glass over the mirror glass. I guess you are an Oakley fan, and thats ok, but to label Costa as "junk" thereby demeaning a very good and I would say superior alternative to Oakley, clearly suggests that you don't know what you are talking about. And yes, Costa glass is more optically pure than any polycarbonate, including Costa polycarbonate. Costa says that upfront.
Got my Costas in the mail. The arms were deformed. I sent them back. I should get a perfect pair for over 200 bucks, Costa never again. I went back to Oakley.
Sorry man... Kevin Van Damme is sponsored by Oakley still.... maybe he was Costa for a short time... But I saw him wearing Oakley's and also had Oakley insignia on his shirt in a recent tournament
Did I say he was sponsored by Costa? I made this a long time ago I don't remember haha, it was a slip up if I did because I've always known he was with Oakley
Their frames are made in Japan, lenses are made in the Daytona Fl facility. Final assembly are in their Dayton facility as well. Just an FYI..

I need to upgrade my shades so this was helpful.
Thanks! Hands down Costa, it's quite the lens! Go to a store and try on all of the frames as they all fit differently!

Most of Oakleys glasses qualify as safety glassed too...that is the advantage of poly carb lenses.....
Nothing but complaints on the rubber nose pieces coming apart after a year. Any thoughts on that? My oakleys never did that.
