You gents hit the nail on the head re Morse. Now that it's no longer required, people love it for the novelty. Keep after it and you will become accomplished. If it's not fun then don't do it!
I was in the shack at VK6PIG Ham College when they contacted Paul on Sunday morning. Very encouraging for newbies to the hobby. I also couldn't get morse code done years ago and gave up as well. So glad they changed it and looking forward to trying some of the new "modes". Great commentary, thanks guys.

@@HamRadioDX I know when I finally do get on air, I will definitely be plugging the crap out of the hobby. Ham College definitely helped getting over the first hurdle being the foundation license. I'm already looking at going for the standard license. Has anyone looked at doing demonstrations at some of the 4wd shows? I'm also looking at doing some POTA's as we do alot of 4wding here.

Great interview, thanks Hayden and Paul. I'm in my mid 50's but when I was in my early 20's I worked for Telecom and looked after the Hobart telex exchange as well as maintaining the telex machines used at the Antarctic Division to communicate with the bases. The comms guys at the division in Kingston were my only customers who could read the baudot code straight from the punched tape! My biggest wish was to travel to Antarctica as a Comms Tech at the time but the communication back then was HF radio and I couldn't get a gig without my
amateur license and knowing morse code. It was the morse that stopped me from doing it, I just couldn't get the required speed. Your channel Hayden and this video with Paul have prompted me to go for my Foundation license. Hopefully you will hear me on the VK7RTC 70cm repeater sometime real soon :-)

Hey Paul, use the "only stations ending in Charlie" then work 5 of them, then "Only stations ending in Delta" then work 5 of those, they will get the idea really quickly and get you some control over the pile up's

Bings back memories. I was in Casey 1989 with only 5 words per minute under my belt. No video link capability back then. Had to pay through the nose for telephone contact back home. Got my 10 wpm some time after getting back. Was VK7JB for years but got tired of the hobby and let it lapse. Not sure if I will apply to get a license back for retirement.
Definitely get your license back! But VK7JB is taken

I had a qso with VK0TB dated 13.2.77. On the QSL I am holding it says RIG: UNIDEN 2020 +LINEAR 400 watt.

Do they still have the Collins 10kw TXs down there. Used to have fun with them on the Amateur bands.
Guess they don’t have the Rombic antennas anymore. We did install a 500 meter long wire out the the island that was successful.
HF80 's came out around 2004, I saw them at Kingston as RTA, pre departure 05' , Rhombics were still at Davis 2006, as well as Collins Conical Monopole, Tandem Deltas and sloping triangles, I put some pictures and info on qrz.
I got an idea where Antarctica is, but where was @ham radio dx coming from ?

So wish i was a ham back in 2010 and 2014 when i was down there, where is it they let you set up and what antenna do you use?

what are hf frequencies. im sdr user canada
That’s generator noise in 60cycle harmonics I have a few on the 991a on 160m 1.920.000mhz 32harmonic of 60 cycles from a substation near me that broadcasts 1060khz aswell as elect humm 😔 but I get those on 14.xxx when I have the back up 10kw generator running as it goes by my balanced feedline 🤔🤨
We run on 50Hz here but the signals are around 60KHz apart. I wouldn't think that a diesel generator would produce that kind of noise
@@paul_daniels I have an older Diamond GZV4000 40 amp switching power supply that puts out hash every 60 KHz from 160 through 15 meters before it goes away. Many of the older switchers have this issue. But in my case the interference appears to only be local to my ham shack from the PS and not from an extraneous source. I would get around the issue by adjusting the variable output voltage of the supply up or down a volt or two to shift the frequency away from a QSO. Perhaps on your next cycle the interference will be gone, in the meantime I can understand how frustrating it can be. Great interview. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Stay safe.

Why you need a license in Antarctica? You not gonna disturb any services
There are emergency and other critical communications down there.
I do understand that but if you learn how to use radio or if you study for a license and you use the radio right way what’s the difference if you own license or not if the radio was used in proper manner
@@piterex7was down there in 2001, we all got trained to use radios and carried vhf and Hf sets when in the field and had night scheds to check back to base, if you missed the sched for too many times, search and rescue would be sent out to look for you. We also were reminded that using the hf sets you were likely to be heard all over the world so keeping it orderly was important.
