Can't wait for this, my husband name is Colin and met him when I was 11 and he was 9, I knew early on he was the one for me, this reminds me of our relationship we were friends for years before he noticed me and realised he loved me
Colin is going to see Penelope being courted by quite a few distinguished men of the Ton and get insanely jealous. He's not going to know why (lacking introspection) he's reacting the way that he is, until his sister (either Francesca or Eloise) points it out to him. Then, he'll have to wrestle with the reality of how he's treated her and talked about her, only showing his true favor for her behind closed doors as if he's ashamed to be seen with her in public. Seeing other men of high status and handsome stature actively seek to court Pen as a wife prospect will force him to see and feel just how amazing of a person and partner Penelope truly is, and how he's been a blind and insecure fool.
How could he feel shame for being seen courting Penelope (likely for her weight), when these men of higher age and stature find her (instantly) physically, mentally, and sexually attractive and have no issue with courting her in public for all of the Ton to see! She's not going to let him off that easily, and she shouldn't. And Colin admitting his true feelings for Penelope will be an internal war between his desires/feelings and his boyish insecurities, knowing that if he doesn't fess up about falling for Pen, someone else even more eligible will.
Omg, both theories are very interesting, and I really want to go with both, I mean, Francesca could be the push Colin needs, but what about Eloise? Perhaps she observes them (Pen and Colin) and she realize that Colin is suffering for her, because the plan worked (with Debling I mean) and she felt conscious about it, and try her best for both of them and maybe we’ll see healing another relationship (Eloise and Pen). She is a perfectly example of being in the friend zone... And she is making moves to leave it realizing that maybe he isn't hers... Sometimes life is that way and the person you think is your soulmate is just your friend and you need to find your own happiness.... Out as beautiful as the books would like to make it but sometimes life isn't pretty... Penelope reminds me of a girl I used to know in the Renaissance and we never manage to find that middle ground.. I still think about her but know that life goes on and I'm finding my new adventures. I honestly think that Penelope deserves better than Collin.
