The light comes towards him and he moves to the side 5 times total in the MV, each time representing a different era, Vessel, Blurryface, Trench, Scaled and Icy and then with the last one representing Clancy, he's wearing the Clancy mask and doesn't run to the side, being more confident in facing the bishops instead of trying to avoid them.

i am SWIMMING in lore for this vid i think even if it isn't 100% lore related, it still has some aspects that could be relevant to it (like the mv for tear in my heart or even the one for car radio) so people on reddit been saying that the lyrics reference a unaliving attempt with the car thing, but i think it could also be something else you see that tyler begins to stand his ground as (what we can only assume are) cars come and instead of him dodging them, the cars start to dodge him instead maybe this is, just like overcompensate, another example of his confidence growing (both tyler's and clancy's lol) and yeah it might be dangerous af (he bouta get hit) but he's there the lyrics are about fresh starts overall if i got it right, so maybe this is idk referring to clancy's change of mind or even foreshadowing that, even if he has seized, he can still be redeemed and be a bandito fresh starts, but not abandoning who you are something like that lol
i definitely need to make a video deep diving into the lore. i think youre definitely onto something here. the repeated scene on the road reminds me of the cycle clancy finds himself stuck in. and, as he says, he’s becoming smarter and more confident with each cycle repeating. there’s definitely a lot of lore to unpack here!

This is how I interpret Next Semester, it might help others make their own interpretations. If it’s too long and you don’t want to read I understand. At the beginning Clancy is having a panic attack and anxiety is taking over him. He says to himself “stand straight, and graduate.” I think what he means by graduating is defeating his anxieties. Therefore school represents the fight with his anxieties, all with the goal of eventually defeating them. As the anxiety takes over, he is telling himself, “come on, be strong, defeat it”. Then he starts remembering about a road and a car, and wanting lights to take him home. I think when he says home he means, a place out of school, and thus a place where he doesn’t have to continue this fight with his anxieties. He wants the light of the car to take him home by destroying him, and then he won’t have to fight anymore. However a car almost hits him and the driver tells him to get out of the road. The driver cares about him and doesn’t want him to get hit, and this is why the car slows down. Then the driver says “you can’t change what you’ve done. Start fresh next semester.” From this and the other information I had gotten, I interpreted and inferred a bunch of things. Firstly, I inferred that Clancy did bad last semester, probably did some things he regrets that now has made him farther from graduating, as they produce anxiety. He would want to change what he did, to be able to do better and graduate. However he can’t change the past and he is losing this battle. Since he is overwhelmed and he can’t change what he did, he results to want to go home, and therefore get hit by a car. When the driver tells him “you can’t change what you’ve done, start fresh next semester”, he is basically telling Clancy, “there is no way to change the past so don’t worry about it and move on, try again instead of giving up.” So while Clancy is having his panic attack he remembers this situation he went through, and remembers to keep trying, and that he might not make it instantly, he might not graduate just yet, but that is alright, as long as he doesn’t give up in defeating his anxieties.
I mean why can’t it be about school and lore? Like maybe Clancy is reminiscing on his past when he felt trapped at school. All he wants is to go home. Yet he’s trapped in this infinite loop of failing and being told you have to keep going - try again next semester etc. But if the song isn’t meant to be literal then yeah it could be about Clancy feeling trapped by his situation and wishing he could just go back home and be at peace when things used to be normal. I know that’s a feeling all of us can relate to. And if the song is an analogy then I could see it still making sense within the lore. So instead of it being about school literally, it’s about him being stuck in a place where doesn’t want to be - and that desperate sense of wanting to go home
i feel like it’s both. a lot of tøp songs do have double meanings. there’s usually a straightforward, more realistic meaning. and a meaning that applies to the lore. i’m pretty sure that’s what’s going on here.

Like he can’t help but have his lyrics be about something he experienced or went through. Might be why we get these songs that seem to have normal subject matters but conceptually they are supposed to still fit in the lore of the story. I think it is partially lore related. Mostly it's about the struggles, but the Clancy mask, SAI posters, red floor - thats lore. I am sure there will be more tiny details that we haven't noticed yet that are hints and all. Can't wait for the theories and analysis videos!

So maybe the person in the song was having a breakdown at school (college?), had the *attempt*, then decided to take the rest of the semester off to recover. And then will try school again next semester. 🥺 That's the most literal meaning, but yeah, the Clancy mask, Blurryface paint, SAI wall references, red tape on pants, etc, definitely give this song a double meaning.
