How did you know that I needed an overgrown jungle temple populated by a snake cult and a jealous vampire to drop into my campaign!? The PCs even made friends with a lizardman early in the campaign and will (presumably??) be pleased to rescue him from his predicament. It's as if you made this just for me. Amazing. Thanks a lot Kelsey
I really like how you're promoting and supporting the ShadowDark product and fanbase. Certain other (mainly one in particular) RPG companies could learn valuable lessons from you.
Kelsey, a great video! You really have streamlined and improved the way that you present things in videos I know that you were often fraught with nervousness but now you are really proceeding like a professional. I think the other thing that is really cool is could you imagine Gary Gygax delivering new modules via the Internet back in his day? Me and my friend both adopted Shadow dark and it has revolutionized our gaming table. We were so excited to find out that you were released a new video. I know that there's a lot of content creators for SD RPG but anything that you produce that comes straight out of the arcane library is gold! Your adherence to the spirit of old school gaming, and the integrity that you have maintained in ensuring that gamers seek to be creative and have fun is so underrated now in this world of corporate RPGs and scandals and executives that are speaking venomously towards their gaming community or the founders of the game I find your coming into the industry so refreshing and I cannot thank you enough.
This is the kindest message -- thank you so much! It really means a lot to me to hear this. I hope I can continue to make you and the SD community proud and keep up the level of quality that you all deserve. It's a big point of pride!
I just love Kelsey and love adventures designed by people who actually play D&D. It's so obvious when an adventure is easy to run versus the garbage some other companies put out.
@@TheArcaneLibrary I hope people at the big companies pay attention to what you do. Even when Im slightly intrigued about an adventure from the big companies, I look at the 300-500 page reading assignment they want to give me, plus the assignment to boil it down into useful notes, and just close the book. I saw one company advertising "the largest D&D adventure" which I think was 800 pages. I just shook my head.
I ran Lost Temple by way of placing it under the Myre Castle in the Gloaming, for the simple reason that it then throws questions at the origins of the Green Knights, and by extension, Knights of St. Ysdris... But there's a twist... I made it so that, depending on who the crawlers made friends with, would affect the final fate of the location... Because it's also in the past, because they found a Kytheros Cog pretty early on, and I decided there would be consequences of that, preferably wobbly timey-wimey consequences. Which then affects not only the "current" timeline but also affects the version of the Gloaming trapped in the Demiplane of Dread... Mwa ha ha, and so forth.
I have always appreciated the way Kelsey appears in these videos in black and white to match the artwork from her books... Wait is that not a digital effect?
I loved the placeholder art too, but wanted to hire Matt Morrow to do some custom work for us (the placeholders were stock art by the magnificent Yuri Perkowski-Domingos)!
I really enjoyed playing in both of these at PAX Unplugged. They are both well structured to keep the players guessing and encourage creative problem solving. Thanks for making them available for me to run for my players!
I’ll definitely do more! We have a big level 1 adventure out as a part of the free Shadowdark QuickStart set, and level 1 goes by so swiftly, so I figured it’d be fun to have more material out there for the higher levels.
Especially love the hidden temple! Vampires, snake people tricks, traps, factions, secret door in water that tries to hypnotize you and that messing with summons a monster, ways to circumvent fights, new monsters, clues to warn about the big bad, giant boulder...it's got it all.
I ran the Raiders of the Hidden Temple for Lurking Fears at PAX Unplugged this year and my groups loved it. One group had no combats at all during the entire adventure. Lots of flexibility.
A lot of your adventures, like Raiders of the Forbidden Temple, give me a vibe of the classic Conan story Red Nails - isolated populations riven with factionalism that that players can ally with/manipulate according to their taste.
Red Nails is my all-time favorite Conan story. I'm sure I'm not alone in that sentiment! The idea of a once-great civilization that has now fallen and fractured really speaks to me. It's interesting to look at a society in its end stages, especially on the scale of a single adventuring site like in Raiders of the Forbidden Temple.
@@TheArcaneLibrary It's a toss up between Red Nails, The Black Stranger (aka Treasure of Tranicos) and The Frost Giant's Daughter for me. The old Marvel comics adaptation of Red Nails is worth tracking down if you haven't already read it; it really gets the decadence and moral decay of the city, and makes the supernatural elements properly creepy.
I don't have a print version of these particular adventures available, but I always include the PDF for free when you buy print material from me! So the core book has the PDF included at no extra cost.

@@TheArcaneLibrary Lol, I already add them but did get a chance to go through them yet. I have been too busy creating my new campaign. Second campaign using ShadowDark RPG!!!!
Shanti's plight seems like one of the tales of Japanese myths from the Kojiki. Regarding the Sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami. After some hijinks(flayed horse toss into a building) from her brother Susanoo she goes into hiding in a cave and a large bolder is placed in front of the entrance that cannot be budged. The other peoples need to coax her out. So they through a raucous party. As she peaks out, they are able to to prevent her from going back in. Cant wait to play these
Raiders of the Hidden Temple - nice design because with all the options (and opportunities for roleplaying and taking sides), no playthrough will be the same.
I usually look at how damaging the "typical" combats and traps are in the adventure (understanding there are also usually a few outliers that are too easy and/or too hard). It can be a bit of an art form rather than a science. You want the characters to feel challenged, but not overwhelmed. Play testing (even if you can only test a handful of rooms) can help!
My group ran Doom of the Red Wastes and they said it felt really hunger games like. Two of the characters died and I did the usual “hey, in the next room you find these people!” We did it as a module in a larger campaign using the Shadowdark hex crawl rules. It’s so much fun - I am the GM and often don’t know what will happen! But half the time I do have a premade module like these thrown in.

I think they work very well since both games are based off the B/X power scale and gameplay loop. You’d want to trade any monsters in the OSE version for the Shadowdark version for best possible outcome, although you don’t strictly have to if you want to just use their built-in attacks and AC (ascending version). I’d divide all treasure in an OSE module by 10 for a Shadowdark group, or else just raise how you give out XP by multiplying the general treasure guidelines by 10.
They do not need to spend their action - they can roll on their turn to try to escape and then take an action as normal (although they might still be grabbed if they fail, so that would limit what they can do accordingly).
