Getting Two Doberman Puppies at the Once-WATCH OUT!
Вставка

- If you're considering getting two Dobermans of the same age, at the same time, then you definitely need to be aware of this! It's called "Littermate Syndrome" and it's prevalent in the Doberman breed. This occurs most typically when an owner gets two Doberman puppies at one time, from the same litter (or even just of the same age) and raises them together. In this scenario, the Doberman puppies can bond to each other deeper than they bond to you, their owner, leading to a laundry list of potential behavior problems. Here's what Littermate Syndrome is, how common it is, and what you can do to avoid it if you do end up with two Dobermans of the same age.

We adopted two male Dobermanns littermates) as puppies close to two years ago. I knew about littermate syndrome prior but knew that there were five of us working and schooling from home and I grew up with a dog trainer so I was familiar with what needed to be done.
At about a year old we started going to a trainer for advanced obedience - the five of us and both dogs at each training twice per week - he's also a breeder (of malinois) and when I talked to him about littermate syndrome and extra care for having two males he said having two males is way better than two females and he wasn't too concerned with littermate syndrome provided the owners are willing to put in the time.
Our boys are typical Velcro Dobermans with us and completely bonded to each of us (but especially my husband and I). It is a LOT of work and can be exhausting for sure, even with five people splitting the work. We haven't experienced littermate syndrome symptoms but put in the time and continue to put in the time every.single.day
It's great to hear about your personal experience with that, Laura! No doubt they are well-trained and socialized now because of all the hard work your family has put into raising them!
We adopted 2 actual litter mates last year, male and female dobermans (theyre still puppies). It's been a journey, both are great dogs separately, but they fight sometimes when they're in the backyard. We've done separate crates, beds, toys, walks, and play time from the start. It's definitely possible, I just wouldn't recommend it because you have to do everything twice, and everything is harder.
Love the channel
I rescued two 4yr old Euro Dobermans last Dec. They’re brother and sister, and they are the BEST! We didn’t have to go through puppies phase, but the connection with our family was immediate!
That's awesome to hear! So glad you were able to rescue them both so they could stay together and keep their bond!
I should surprise my wife with a new Doberman, thanks for the advice 😂
Hahaha! Any time, man!
If I did that she’d surprise me with the fact that I taught her how to shoot! 😳😱💥🤣🤣🤣👍
Good luck with that one mate 🤣
First of all a HUGE THANK YOU JOHN!!! I so appreciate your videos and all the information on this wonderful breed! I have been wanting a Doberman since high school (over 40 year ago) I finally have my dream come true and thanks to you we felt well informed and confident. 💕🐾We adopted brother and sister litter mate Dobermans and we couldn't be happier!!! They are both well adjusted, calm, bonded to our family as well as my husband and me. They love other people, and will even avoid our neighbors dog that instigate fence fighting. We spend a lot of time with them and they are well trained. Oh yes, they also love each other and our other 4 dogs and 2 cats. I heard it said that "A Doberman needs to respect everyone in the family, including the family cat!" I knew about LMS before we adopted, but I feel these symptoms are common in single dogs as well. If you adopt two you need to teach them respect period!
Ooow.. And I was thinking that I had to "wait" long before my dream, to own a Dobermann, to come true after 25 years 🙈 (I'm 43 now). Glad to know I'm not the only one!! 🤣. My pup will be born in the next 10 days so I'm going to have to wait a bit longer but the end is in sight!! I hope everything goes well with all of your dogs and cats.. My Dobermann will only have to share the house with me and my other dog, a 5 yr old Staffordshire Bull terriër male. I did make the conscious decision to go for a male pup even though I already have a male dog. I had a very long conversation about it with the breeder of the Dobermann, who was a bit sceptic at first, until she watched a few videos of my Staffie DJ playing with other dogs both male and female. DJ is extremely social and friendly.. he literally loves every single person whether he knows them or is meeting them for the first time. He also gets along great with all kind of dogs and ignores dogs that act aggressive towards him. He just stays calm and confident and does not acknowledge the aggressive acting dog.. When he meets a insecure dog he stops at a distance and waits for that dog to come to him or until that dog relaxes before he goes to meet them. It's like he always seems to understand what another dog needs to become or stay comfortable around him and adjusts his way of playing and his energy level to the other dog. He is in no way a "push over" and will let other dogs know when they are to wild or when he doesn't want to play etc but he always does that in a way that doesn't create (more) friction so to say. I'm hoping my pup will learn some of DJ's "social skills" and becomes just as good natured and confident as he is..
Just got 2 fawn boys and they're the best. Thanks for the video.
So glad to hear that everything is going smoothly for you all. You're welcome and glad you enjoyed it!
Hi ,so happy to see you back John, super video, greets from belgium from Finn the doberman and Maja 😊🤩
Thanks so much, Maja! It's good to be back in the swing of things!
Interesting you should mention this issue as I am waiting to see if it develops with my neighbour's new puppies. Now, I have a Doberman and she's THE best dog (of course) but the neighbours across the road brought home 2 BIG St Bernard puppies about a month ago. They plop them outside on lines (no fences) and they bark at everything that moves. Never see them walking either alone or doing any training outside so it should be interesting to watch the chaos unfold.
Watching the chaos unfold is definitely a good way to put that, Susan! It's smart of you to observe everything and learn from their experience first.
Wow! Talk about an uphill battle that probably won't end well. We have littermate bird dogs that were rescued from a backyard breeder bird dog operation. (Lab/pointer). 15 puppies from 2 litters rescued at 4 weeks 4th of July weekend 13 years ago.
They started doing weird things. Fortunately, I was already an experienced owner of a giant breed dog, so was pretty "heavy handed" early on. You can't just let things "go" with giant breed puppies. They grow big, and they grow fast. You have to be on it early on. They still had problems, though.
Most people don't understand what it takes to deal with a giant breed puppy, much less the very special needs of owning 2 of them.
We're now going through one of the most horrible parts of having a pair of dogs with lms ..... we're going to need to decide to send them to doggie heaven at the same time. 1 has longer term health problems, the other was fairly recently diagnosed with a fairly aggressive cancer. They have such terrible separation anxiety that there's just no humane way of just putting 1 of them down without the other. Just logically, 2 dogs the same age are going to live about the same amount of time. But, probably not exactly.
I had to take one to the vet today to come up with a "palliative care plan". The better half is on a trip... so "other dawg" had to stay home alone. He knows his buddy is sick. The cats know he's sick. When we got home, the one dawg was basically just laying in my office wimpering. 120 pound dawg wimpering for his buddy. They are miserable separated. More than just typical dog separation anxiety.
As hard as it is to lose 1 dog, if you get littermates, chances are, you're going to lose 2 at some point. Like probably close together or at the same time.
....anyway... 2 St. Bernard puppies? Sts and Mastiffs are awesome dogs..... but, you'd have to be about half..... um, yeah... 1 Star wouldn't recommend. LOL
@@revjaybird2 Just to update . .I have since confirmed they are actually Great Pyrenees , just not solid white. (Never knew they had colour variants). Anyway I have seen them being walked separately so at least that's a start I guess but I'm with you . .still not a good idea.
Hi John,I missed you!🐾🤗🙋♀️
I have two Dobermann pups from the same litter; I actually thought they would showcase the typical LMS symptoms, but it turns not to happen at all. I believe that it may be really common to see such phenomenon, but I also believe that other factors such as the genetic disposition, the environment, the family, and such of the dogs may affect how strong the possibility of LMS to occur. My pups are not as close as I expected than them as close as to me; they just follow me everywhere - the only Separation Anxiety I saw from them is that, they cannot sleep without me beside them. But tbh, they do not really like sleeping together in a pile, but they scoot all-over me just to sleep beside me. We feed them separately to avoid resource guarding and so, but they are never a resource guarder to humans; I can even touch them and hold their bowl while eating. What I noticed is that, they are adapting to my lifestyle and personality, like because I was sleeping almost whole day recently; they sleep when I sleep, awake when I am. They are also adapting to my emotional well-being which I believe is a good sign to see if there is any rapport between the owner and dogs. Trainability is at peak, owner relationship is utmost, and temperament is excellent. Nevertheless, it does not mean that anyone should have littermates or two pups at the same time, not because LMS did not occured to me, means it won't to some. And so vice-versa, not because you experience LMS, means everyone will experience it as well. Just be responsible with your decision.
Sooooo !!! Happy that your back this show isn’t the same without you !!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I had got two dobies puppies at once at age 11 weeks old but from different litters and they grew up to be best of friends..Just worked well together like brother and sister.... And very obedient to the family as well...
That's some great information I never even thought of before! Thank you! Awesome video yet again!!
So glad you enjoyed it and learned something new, too!
I was not initially aware of this problem with the two brothers that we rescued (in retrospect they did display the symptoms) but then one passed away suddenly. The remaining dog was so despondent he was on deaths doorstep for weeks. We got enough help with programs for him to survive but you might consider this aspect to add to this fine video with your expertise.
Great topic! I was debating this myself.
So glad you enjoyed it, Bill! Sounds like it came at a good time, then!
😆.. we just bought two 8 week old brothers.
Relatively think we got this though... love your channel!
Great video. I have never heard about this. I have always had at least two years between dogs and I always have an well mannered and trained older alpha female. Having an alpha female makes taking on new dogs easier than you would think.
That's great to hear your experience on this and how it panned out well when getting them at least two years apart! Good thinking and planning!
Absolutely true. We have 2 littermates and it takes much work to grow them up well-adjusted. Ours are happy to be separated from each other for good times traveling. As we have a farm, they have a wide berth to do their jobs. They are obedient, well-trained but full of beans when tag-teaming on a job. It makes more work for us, but we are experienced. I do not recommend it for a family home.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Carolyn! Definitely is good to hear about how your family has been able to handle two littermates on a farm. No doubt that they have more ways to burn out their energy on a working farm!
Hlo i think I am the first one here I really really enjoy your videos and thanks for making them
No problem, Sivani! Our pleasure!
LOVE THE VIDEO❤️
Really appreciate your support, Kari! Glad you could resonate with this video!
@@DobermanPlanet oh of course no problem I got a Doberman to he’s a male red Doberman
I have two 9 month old Euro Dobie females. They are sisters from the same litter. They do everything separate except for windows of playtime. Recently, I've noticed their play turns too rough and I will break them up and put them in a down stay to cool off. After that, they're good to go. I'm not sure if that's because they're sisters or because they're rambunctious. They're very well bonded to myself and my partner. I would like each to build more confidence, though! They have slight reactivity as well which seems to happen in high drive dogs anyways. I think having 2 littermates is possible but you must be prepared for a very high level of daily commitment, especially in the 1st year. My girls aren't perfect but we're working towards the lifestyle we all want together! I think that's part of the fun in raising dogs.
I'm 9 months in with my first Doberman puppy, and although I've had my ups and downs with raising him this far who would get two of these LOL one is enough!!!!! I love my pup though... I am daily reminded of how incredibly intelligent this breed is!!!
I am completely with you! 9 month old doberman with us and I feel exactly the same! Two would outsmart me hahah
Agree!
Me and my E.D. boy "Jed" had our two years together anniversary yesterday, way back along Wyoming's wild Grey's River near Yellowstone. 730 nites snugging in our bed! My soulmate.
Good information, my daughter is a dog trainer and she was telling me about this just the other day.
We’re getting a second Doberman in 3 weeks and now I’m brushing up on all the puppy videos. Thank you for this amazing info!! This will be our Third Doberman and we just love the breed so much! It will be the first time owning 2 at once 🙈😬 our big girl will be 3 in November and our new little guy will be 8 weeks when we pick him up 🙏 are we crazy 😂😂 Thanks again for this amazing channel!
Hello!! How please let me know how it goes! We just got the same - a 8 week old male and our girl is 3!!
I'm about to get a Dobermann pup besides the 5 yr old Staffordshire Bull terriër I already have! The pup is not born yet so it will be oktober before the Dobermann comes.. My Staffie is super social and friendly and gets along great with other dogs .. I hope he will show the dobermann pup that new people and new things are fun to meet and discover!
That's a great age gap for the two of them to have. No doubt that your Staffordshire Bull Terrier will do a great job showing your new Doberman puppy the ropes!
@@DobermanPlanet I live in the Netherlands... It's very hard to find a well bred pup overhere... There are only a handful of really good and responsible breaders left.. I got lucky!! That line originated in Russia and they bread for over 25 years with that same line and they test every adult dog that is being used for breeding on many health issues like DCM, HD, ED, etc etc. So the "medical history" of those lines are wel known and documented. Is that also standard in the US?
I love this channel. Thanks Doberman Planet!
Love your channel!
I got a 7 week old male doberman shortly after i got a male rottweiler. he was 4.5 months old when i got my doberman. My dobie has exhibited uneasiness around other dogs that aren't puppies/smalller dogs. Both of my dogs are hyperfocused on me in the house. When we go walking, my older dog is all eyes on me and my doberman is kind of all over the place(loose leash walking has been tough, but we are getting there). Both of my dogs went through separate basic obedience classes. My rottweiler excelled during the training, so much that he was picked as the example dog more often than not. My dobie would make me look like a baffoon during his training classes; ignoring basic commands he knows, freezing in the middle of heeling, etc.. Its been tough, I imagine its hard for a young pup to build confidence when he's got a slightly older brother going through things he's soon to go through. We are making it though, and they both get treated with love and respect. My rottie is very defensive of my dobie though at dog parks, so much so that I think i'm at the point of only bringing one at a time. My rott will try to intervene with a dog my dobie is doing good play with and go at the other dog.
Your Rottweiler might be trying to protect your Doberman puppy, or he could also be jealous of the attention he's getting. It can be tough sometimes, but it sounds like you're doing the right thing by giving them separate obedience classes and treating them both with love and respect. Just stay consistent and all your hard work will pay off when they are both a little older!
@@DobermanPlanet My rottie is a little over a year and neutered(his sexual drive made dog parks impossible pre surgery) and my dobie(unaltered and I don’t think he needs to be fixed since he rarely tries to mount dogs)is coming up on a year in 2 weeks. I think some sort of littermate syndrome might exist, but I also think my Doberman is shy unless he feels he has the physical advantage against new dogs, even though he gets rough and rowdy with his older brother at home no problem. If a dog he doesn’t know very well at the dog park starts to chase him, he will scream. I feel terrible when people tell me “you have a Doberman why is he screaming like that?”
Great video John
I grew up with two dogs. Both females. One was a cocker spaniel and other was spinger spaniel. Both loved other each
That's great to hear that they had such a close bond!
Our 2 boys are 8 mos apart, and both came home at 8 weeks. We did all the separate training, but the younger one was always less confident. Now, at 2 & 3 yrs old, the older displays dominant behavior frequently which has led to the younger starting physical altercations daily. We have tried desensitization, removing one from the situation, back-to-basics training, and NOTHING is helping 😢 Thankfully, no skin broken, just mouthing and ferocious growls & barks, but we've agreed to never have 2 males again unless the age difference is substantial!

Hi John,I misses you!🐾❤🙋♀️
Hi, Silvia! It's good to be back in the swing of putting these videos out each week again! Thanks for all your continual support!
Good information. You shouldn't get two puppies of the same age, especially from the same litter, with any breed or mutt. You mentioned the reasons and the issues that can occur. Let the dogs love you and your family and build that strong bond with you. If you still want another dog later on, your first dog will usually be a great asset in helping to train the new pup by showing the pup how things are done by example. We had a Doberman that just about trained a mixed breed we got a few years later. The best example was when we ended up with 4 dogs over a few year period and our first dog was a Standard Poodle that pretty much trained the other dogs for us. Seriously, if you have a good dog, many times that can be a great asset in helping to train your new puppy.
I made this mistake, it was terrible. They constantly faught, when we finally separated them an rehomed one, the other became aggressive and needed to go to a more experience owner without kids
I have just introduced a puppy to our family. I have a 12 year old female and got a Male puppy. Is working out fabulously. She adores him and has brought her a new lease of life. Not sure I'd want 2 puppies at the same time though 😳
Congratulations on your new puppy! Your adult female is probably showing him the ropes already!
@@DobermanPlanet it's certainly easier having her around. Hes only 15 weeks right now and is already great on the lead. His bite inhibition is pretty good, although his second lot of teeth haven't started coming through yet. I do have it a bit easier though, as he has amazing eye contact too. Loving him!
Would you recommend getting the male or the female first?
My mom ended up getting two full Euro sisters, from a person who had no right in owning Dobies in the first place. And the smaller of the two sisters had such bad aggression, that our senior poodle almost got hurt a few times. My mom eventually had to rehome and spay the more aggressive of the two sisters.
That's sad she wasn't able to keep both of them. It just doesn't work out sometimes and it sounds like it was best to find the aggressive one a better suited home. Same-sex aggression and littermate syndrome can definitely be concerning!
@@DobermanPlanet it was pretty disappointing, although she was pretty happy the aggressive of the two sisters went to a better home where she’d be alone. And now my mom has the sister she wanted out of the two.
How many Dobermans have you raised? I just turned 74 and have had many Dobies, they are the best breed, a few yrs ago, big Sam and myRotty/ shepard, saved me from being malled by a 300+ male black bear, we cant imagine the power and rage of a huge bear, his claws were as big as my fingers. Sam was like Bruce Lee, Sam drew blood on the bear, as He went into a frenzie, biting from all sides at once, Nick plowed in swinging, Nicky like Mike Tyson, gave me time to get a gun and escape, my High school friend from back east, Roy D. and his girlfriend were the ones in Night of the Grizzly, Glacier Park, she was eaten alive, that was my first thought, my dogs saved my life. I worked in the AZ forest service, so I saw and heard many bear experiences. Dobermans forever, Rip Big Sam, see ya in Heaven, my boy.🌺🌺♥♥
Two Dobermans so far. Wow! What a scary experience! No doubt that is a time in your life you'll never forget. So interesting to see how each of your dogs protected you the best that they possibly could. You definitely have and had their loyalty that day!
Could you do a video on if you already own a Doberman and want to add another puppy to the fam???
Yes! This video should help you decide about getting a 2nd Doberman: ua-cam.com/video/DukaydSOcJ8/v-deo.html. Hope this helps!
I have two females from the same litter. They definitely have social issues with other dogs. I can not let them loose in the dog park. I can put them in the down stay position and they will stay there all day. The second I let them go play they will get aggressive with the other dogs. And yes they can get into some really bad fights with each other. Have not experienced the separation anxiety yet.
you called it host family there called puppy raiser but in Britain you can raise 2 pups at the same time but they must be 6 months apart
Interesting! That's good to know. Thanks for sharing!
I still say hold the phone.
Hahah oh good!
Love the channel, been watching videos daily and some more than once the last month. I am dead set on getting a dobie as my next dog. Last dog was a German Shepard, she was the runt, and nobody wanted her. She wasn't expected to be much. So I took her and she became a great dog. She was well behaved, great with kids, very obedient and a great guard dog. She lived a long healthy life. Unfortunately, we had to put her down one month before she turned 18. Kidney failure. At 16 she had some minor hip pain but CBD treats made her comfortable, my vet was surprised.
So I do have a question, I am in the middle of changing careers I am at the point that I can leave my fulltime job and become a FT real estate agent, so days off and days with traveling and showing homes. How well will a dobie puppy adapt to traveling around? Anywhere between 10 minutes up to 2 to 3 hours. tanks for the great content......
Wow! Eighteen years is a long and happy life! So glad you were able to take her in and care for her so well.
You could certainly take your Doberman with you on the road while showing houses if you wanted.! That just would probably divide your attention some and keep you a little distracted from the clients when having to train appropriate behaviors while learning the real estate ropes and answering all their questions. It would be great socialization for your Doberman, though; they'd love all the time spent with you! We have even known a few big rig truck drivers who take their Dobermans with them! Hopefully that gives you some encouragement!
A friend of my fiances dobermans accidentally had puppies, the male they got was supposed to have already been neutered they were upset but right now they have 7 black and reds. I have a backyard so i planned on taking 2 off her hands, they know i had a very energetic german sheperd as a teen (well it wasnmy grandmothers dog but she was too old to do more them feed her)
Im trying to figure out if i should take two boys, two girls, or one of each. I currently live with my older brother and when he moves again he will also be taking one dog. So ill be the primary trainer of mine and he will become the trainer of his. For us, they will just be pets though. No job, but we will go to back to the puppy classes we took the sheperd to. Ill definitely let him know that we should do sperate training sessions.
As long as they are not litter mates 2 would be nice John
Yes, you're right! There are a lot of people who enjoy living life with two Dobermans. Here's a video, if you haven't seen it yet, that we did on the pros and cons of owning two: ua-cam.com/video/DukaydSOcJ8/v-deo.html.
UPDATES ON HARLO PLS
I have a question. I have always wanted a Doberman. Two full bred Dobermans came up on stray hold together after found in my city. One girl ( blk/tan), one male fawn. I put in an app for either one. My questions are that I currently have a yorkie girl we got from a breeder and a medium size shiba inu and they are trained and amazing and both girls. What sex should I go with if I get selected and how do I integrate them into our pack? I need help soon! I am not taking on this lightly and I trust your advice.
One thing I wish I knew more about before getting a doberman is how susceptible dobermans are to getting bloat and GDV. We just had to.have one of our dobermans put down because of it 😞
HELP!!! I have two 10 month old male Dobermans who started getting severely aggressive towards each other in the last two months! We’ve been keeping them separate otherwise they want to kill each other. We took them to a 30 day board/train and after a week the trainer told us to take them home!!! There has been no change we need serious help any advice or recommendations of reputable trainers tasked in littermate syndrome in Florida or South Georgia would be great thank you!
But I would never get 2 pups at approximately the same age... Much less full brothers or sisters..
But I want like 5!! Lol. Not all the same age though. That would be tough. Thanks for the great video.
They are addicting, aren't they?! Haha. Happy to put this video out and thanks for your support!
Would it be considered bad to get on multiple wait lists from different breeders to get a puppy? Just in case one comes up before the other?
Lol wow I'm about to get 2 from the same liter...
How bad is Doberman shedding because my girlfriend has a Aussie husky mix and the fur drives me wild😂
Great question! Here is our video on how much Doberman's actually shed: ua-cam.com/video/dh7aRlMiOjA/v-deo.html.
can a teen get a doberman? btw thanks for new video!
Yes! I got a female precisely 1 year ago and it has been super easy even if I am 16! Anyway I wouldn't get a dobermann as a first dog (since I was so young I lived with dogs)
@@lilloquadrio6228 thank you so much
@@philomath1010 thank yoy like so much!

You sure can! Dobermans are very smart and can pick up tricks and commands and bond with a new owner at any stage of life if given enough time, consistency, and attention.
Whoops already got 2 females from the same litter and they're only 9 and a 1/2 weeks
How are they doing now?
If two dogs are different breeds, but the same age, will this still happen?
Yep 100% happened to me with my Great Dane and Dogo Argentino
