i've identified mr. John Powell as the most fascinating Hollywood composer around 10 years ago. When i first heard Bourne's soundtrack. I'm glad i was lucky enough to bump onto his name. We can expect more great things to come, I'm looking forward to them ..
It's just awesome that a composer like this is showing us his work, thank you really much. Is it possible to show us your work from the Lando's Closet Piece? It is lovely!
I somehow just stumbled onto John’s channel, didn’t even think he’d have a channel and wow.... even more respect for sharing so much already posted. Sorry I’m late but thank you for sharing to help us learn and appreciate your scores.
This and "Reminiscence Therapy" together made for the best action scoring of 2018. You are even more awesome for putting this up for all to see. Thank you.
I just remembered why I love this guy's music so much, the opening of How to Train your Dragon, reminds of the feeling I got when I saw hook for the first time !
Could you show us the process of the unreleased track "Maul of Dathomir" (the one which plays when Qi'ra speaks to Maul)? I would appreciate it very much!
Studying your Midi Mockup! Could it be possible to know how did u do the strings articulation starting at 1:51? It is a marcato without spiccato overlay from CCS?
I wonder how much of the mock ups were mixed into the final mixes. I've certainly worked on a few projects where it was pretty much 50/50, with the mix favoring the live elements. I am assuming a lot of the percussion is sampled based versus live. Just a guess but it would be cool to know if this practice is occurring even in the highest level projects.
I would think there's some of the sampled instruments in the final mix, even, or maybe especially at this level on a project of such orchestral complexity, although to be fair I've definitely never worked on a project at this level.
On a blockbuster like Solo, it seems like 95%+ of the score is the live recordings. With the orchestras they use, there's almost nothing that sounds better with digital instruments.
Awesome ! I wonder what the practical method is to handle so many bpm tempo changes during the orchestra recording.... any hints ? I was always told to avoid tempo changes to make the recording easier... :)
@@kylejudkins754 Did you mean transcribe? Yeah! I did, is the best practice for learn orchestration...I usually transcribe many things for my students, this is a perfect piece for explain modal exchange, diminished scale and block chord parallels. I used a fragment (like 5 bars) and then I make a development of this for an opening that I made for a concert with the Medellín Philharmonic. Then I will upload, all the best
Sophistication is back in film scoring . Love your arrangements and creativity.

took the words right out my mouth
Thanks for doing those mockups
I have not written anything for a long time, I am very sad and happy at the same time
Thanks so much for uploading these videos! They give us a chance to study the music at a deeper level.

KRIKEY!!! Mock-up chops of DOOM!!!!!!! So amazing, hearing live/memorex in one seamless blast! 'UUUUUGE skill and creativity!!
You have an 'overwriting complex' and I love it!
High Frequency Crispy Trumpets. 🎺
No one writes trumpet parts like Powell these days.
my favorite composer of all time
Best modern composer imo
This is so cool to see! I absolutely adore this score.
If there's anything I've learned from a Powell score it's that if you want action, you use a LOT of sixteenths-some extra spice, triplets. :)
Wow. That was an awesome cue.
Thank you so much for posting all this! So much to learn from the piano rolls and sheet music
1:26 pretty much the same orchestration and style as Michael Giacchino in Medal of honor underground score.
Ah, no demo can match the crisp of the Almighty Powell Final Mix Trumpets
I think Kevin Kiner uses the same VSTs for his work, so the demo sounds like it came from “Rebels.” haha
2:19 Snuck a bit of Jurassic Park in there.
Sheesh what a puzzle, awesome!
3:13 How I walk down the stairs when my mum calls me for dinner.
Amazing!Anybody else that heard a slice of Jurassic Park at 2:20?😬

Yes please! We would like that very much!

what a god...
I would love to see John Powell compared another Star Wars project, Maybe Tales of The Jedi Season 2?
breathtaking
I hope they hire you for the next SW trilogy!
Fascinating as always maestro!
Insanely good man!

What I'd really love to know is how long it takes to write such a cue!
Looking at the Midi I can really learn a lot!

yeah interesting point. im curious now too.

He said that he rarely puts demos into the final mix

JakeTheGearHeart Yeah the musicians in those orchestras are first class
correct me if i'm wrong but I think the "final mix" parts are real orchestra playing. Meaning that it's not entirely a mockup.
Correct - I'm assuming final mix indicates the version that ended up in the film while demo is the sampled mockup
thats amazing! beast
Would be awesome to have the MIDI file of this track :D
Teach me your legendary skills of Logic Pro
Does anyone know what software this is?
Pretty sure he uses LOGIC
Awesome ! I wonder what the practical method is to handle so many bpm tempo changes during the orchestra recording.... any hints ? I was always told to avoid tempo changes to make the recording easier... :)
midiiiiiii OMG...How I wish had that midi for study orchestration!!
use your ears not your eyes :) transpose transpose transpose

Are the "Demo" portions actually MIDI mockups? Or just ...demos in sense of the mix?
Pretty sure they are midi mockups. They sound like more, don't they?
Those crazy trumpets 😍 what did you use ?
berlin brass
he uses berlin brass and supliments trombones and horns I think with cinebrass? its in his other videos too
@kyle judkins: any ideas on how to get the staccato trumpets right on 'This is Berk'?
AWESOME
Es bellisimo
so much want to look at some score.
