There are only 4 sounds on the built-in 808 (snare, kick, and both hi hats)? I'd really want to incorporate the classic 808 cowbell, rim shots, and other sounds if I were using this unit.
Yeah there only 4 sounds from each TR drum machine. The cool thing is you can add your own samples to the Serato Sampler and then sequence that into the TR-S. :)
I heard that Serato was releasing an update which allows you to save Sampler banks which will be super useful. So essentially you could have additional custom TR-808 Serato Sampler banks that you can load and sequence.
They could have updated the MV and added TR rec and turntable emulation. Instead, decades of great standalone gear and now Roland courts a market who'd rather play other people's music than make their own. A missed opportunity.
Ö Hase the MV actually does have TR rec mode in it. This isn't the first time Roland has entered the DJ market in fact a few of their groove boxes such as the MC-307 and MC-909 both had pitch sliders to allow for easy mixing of tempos with live music. The fact if the matter is there are a lot of producers who are in fact Dj's and this allows for the integration or incorporation of live or produced music with a Dj set. The DJ-808 isn't just for playing other people's music, it can allow you to play and perform your original music live .... just gotta think outside the traditional box. :)
I meant traditional TR rec with 16 pads left to right like the DJ 808 and some grooveboxes and drum machines. The MV doesn't have that interface. From what I can tell, the reason why the MC 909 seems to be more popular than the MC 808 is that you have to interface with a computer on the 808. With the DJ 808, Roland has taken that a step further by requiring not only a computer but using non-Roland software to organize the files. Most people who make their own music aren't using Serato etc to do so. Artists and technicians are two different things. It's okay to be good at either job, but thinking outside the box shouldn't include expanding the definition of what a musician is so a person who is really good at matching BPM and pitch of other people's music can feel good about themselves. This is why DJ's have the most sensitive egos on the planet and they should just learn to love what they're good at IMHO.
It def would be a bit overkill for a noob but the flip side to that is in order for him to not be a noob and to set himself apart taking something like this on could be beneficial to his career as a dj later on as he will learn much more.
LOL Yeah sync is just the death of real djing but it does in handy when using external devices so everything can lock together. Personally I still prefer mixing on my 1200's in the studio and at clubs with Serato but I do have the DJ-808 and the Pioneer DDJ-SZ which is nice with the bigger platters.

Can this be used standalone, or does it need a laptop?
djvoid1 nope. just need the laptop to DJ your music for serato featured the drum machine is stand alone
Mixer can be used stand-alone with turntables or CDJS as well as the TR-S Drum Sequencer can be used in stand-alone mode (no laptop required)

Mike Acosta i agree sync is good for keeping things tight while you add and focus on other things while expanding your performance.
