  • Justin from Grin Technologies feels like hub motors have gotten a bad rap over the years. Through many years of innovation and refinement he thinks their e-assist systems can now compete easily with available mid-drive systems. He takes us through their development and Grin's new emphasis on hub motors for both delta and tadpole trikes.

I have a hub motor bike, I really like that it is absolutely silent, a friends planetary drive sounds like a coffee grinder by comparison. Good to see further development of the hub motor technology.

Wait, grintech, you guys were at Spezi?!?
    And I missed it? :(
Not that I'd be really sad about it, cause that's f****ingly awesome!
Would love to meet you guys there next time!
    Also you, Gary, of course.

You caught my interest about putting front motors on my very off road capable tadpole trike.

Justin is one of the real pioneers in the E bike business. Their innovations have been revolutionary and his enthusiasm and knowledge are fun to witness. I watched his videos about powering a sailboat and I''ve never sailed! LOL
He's a great ambassador for the industry.
I'm very tempted by his all axle hub for my Catrike E trike. I have a Falco DD hub on the back wheel but gave up an 81spd 29" rear wheel (3 sp hub and 27sp derailleur) and I'd love to get that back and use a front hub motor. hmmm

Haven't been aboard Grin for awhile, I hope to be able to afford that bike they show here or something comparable. I've aged not so well and it hard to sit a two wheeler these days. ( Good job Justin)

Very interesting. How about velomobils? Did you try to make refit for replacing velos drum brakes for hubdrive disk breaks?

Aren't the Heinzmann CargoPower motors oil-filled? Do they also leak?

Hub motors the big advantage, regenerative breaking, to charge the battery, a major advantage. For trikes it would work best with a mid mount transmission, shortening the chain and all the problems a long chain creates, two drive chains/ belts instead of one.

I find hub motors great, unless it gets steep. Here a middle motor is more efficient and does not loose power so much.

Great interview! Justin is like Elon Musk....for bicycles !

    • @jonabub

      Don't downgrade Justin like that.
Elon Musk is far from being as visionary as Justin. Justin is the team deal, Elon just buys companies. Justin treats his employees really well, Elon forces them to work overtime against all worries about health and family. Justin makes fun stuff for electric individual mobility, Musk had people build another monster of a car that means tons of material moved around for one person.
Don't be like Elon, be like Justin.

@jonabub don't be an ass. Someone gave a compliment, and the "kens" have to spoil it with their politics. nothing positive to say?...then just shut up.
