About 2 decades ago I watched a documentary about this temple made by Discovery channel. This temple and kailasa temple both are wonder of wonders. And I don't think there could be any building or temple in this world which can rival or even could come closer to it in technically. And I think all this is possible because India was the richest country on this planet for the longest period of time.
We cannot blame the British for their wrongdoings, mainly it happened because few worst and dirtiest Hindus who were traitors betrayed our great nation, centuries back to the Mughals and later the British, still many of such worst are living among us .
Moat may have 2 reasons : 1] May be they wanted to safeguard something important in the temple. 2) It is good for water harvesting and ground water improvement.

Usually temples in India will have a water body in or around. There is a belief that people visiting the temple need to be clean and pure before entering the temple. There are several man made structures much more huge than this lake. See for example Bhojtal lake in Bhopal India spanning about 31km2 or 12 square miles.

Ok I'll explain it because angkor wat is too big and deep down under land of the building is sand so we use water to maintain the building not to fall that's how they can stand for so many years and one more reason is that angkor wat was built as mount meru for vishnu since he lives there and mount meru surrounded by the sea so water is the sea. And the king who commanded to build this wanted to show how powerful he is, Khmer King used theirs masterpieces to show off theirs power.

I think it was a fortress temple and for your information ancient Indian kept large amounts of gold in temples and they also collected taxes in the temple so , basically it was a treasury of a kingdom . I think they made it to protect that treasure

This is my 2 nd comments Happy Navratri festival to You which starts from today 17/10/2020 . A festival of 9 nights. "Nav" is sanskrit word means "Nine" & "ratri" means "night". At every night we sings maa Durga's strotram & other Devi's song, At center we keep maa Durga's photo or statue. In Gujrat, peoples make a circle around it & start to play traditional dance with wearing traditinal dress which is called "garba dance" maa means "mother". maa durga killed demon mahishasura. The war between maa durga & demon mahishasura continued for 9 days & 9 nights. On tenth day demon mahisha- sura was killed by maa durga. Also Lord Rama killed demon ravana on the same day but years are different. We celebrate this day as Vijaya-dashami" i.e Dashahara.
