This Kaleido 3 EINK e-Note is the Best | Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C Review

- The device is beautifully built, aluminum, and undoubtedly, the best pen in the market that is actually included in the purchase, the Pen 2 Pro. Onyx's UI is near perfection in the E-note game. Offering a vast range of functionality while keeping it accessible for the user to understand where everything is. There is something very compelling about reading and drawing in full colour on an E INK display. This might take the crown as the best e-note of 2023.

I have Onyx Boox Nova air C. I do love it, it is perfect size, colors, battery life, everything is perfect. And I was happy until I saw this review.
Now I have to buy Ultra C... I do not need it, but I have to buy it... damn, this channel will make me broke some day :))))
Are the colors here much better than on your Nova?
@@tdome3000 I do not have the Ultra C yet. But from the video I've seen so far, yes the colors are less washed out. Needless to say that I was very happy with colors on Nova air C. But this is even better :)
@@LadislavVydra Please tell if Nova air C is a great device for reading and writing ? What is your experience with the device ? I am confused between Tab ultra C , kindle Scribe and Bigme inknote colour. All these three seem equally promising.
@@Manjusinghable well, I received my Ultra C a week ago and honestly it is superior device. So now it depends what kind of stuff you would like to use it for. I will give you my experience so far.
Nova Air C: light, portable. If you want to read books, have a nice colored bookshelf and regular note taking experience. It is the device you are looking for.
Tab Ultra C: heavier (but not by a big margin), not really a portable thing. It is really a tablet size device. But still big as a bigger book (A5 or so), for me it is ok to have it in bag.
Now if you are going to read a lot of comics, annotate PDFs for work as example or do lots of a notetaking in various templates, then Ultra C is 100% way to go.
My scenario is now that I read a lot of comics and books and do heavy notetaking for my work and so on. So I have Ultra C a daily driver.
Hope it helps.
@@LadislavVydra Thanks for the quick reply. Boox tab ultra C is a great device and it is also the latest. Though a bit bulkier. Is the screen not a bit grey in comparison to Kindle Scribe. It does not seem so bright. I am not into comics. But I do read a lot. I have hundreds of books’pdf which I need to download on some good e-ink device. Whether it is tab ultra C , Bigme inknote colour or Kindle Scribe.
I love how this device looks, I'm deeply in love with my Nova3, it's going to be a long time before I change it, but seeing the progress of their line and options brings me happiness for my future device
I've been looking for a tablet to some light note taking but mostly reading comics, manga, and books. I had no idea color e-ink had come this far. I am super impressed and will probably purchase one of these. Thanks for the comprehensive review!
I'd like to see how this device performs with OneNote. Great Review!
Great review! I'm very excited for this as I currently am a Tab Ultra user.
Sidenote, interesting book. At 4:58 the last 7 words on the screen 😂😂😂
I think I will buy this as it will help me a lot while working. Thanks for the review it was very helpful, especially the notes taking section.
I’m just now getting into ereaders and my god this has everything ive been hoping and dreaming for. I just have to justify this price haha
also btw really glad you reviewed the manga experience because I was sad that the other products didnt offer color because I love looking at One Piece's color spreads when I read
I'm saving up for a new higher quality e ink tablet that I'm going to buy at the end of the year, it was going to be an Nova air 2 plus, but I wasn't locked into that idea. I want to buy this one right now haha
I have a Tab ultra. Would be nice to see side by side comparison with Tab Ultra C to see how much darker the background on C is due to Kaleido 3. I am thinking of replacing my Ultra with Ultra C:-)
I stumbles across exactly such a direct comparison between these two devices and thought I leave it here in case someone needs it: ua-cam.com/video/5AVx7w7eU3Y/v-deo.html. It seems you can reach a similar brightness with the frontlighting.
I'm watching for few years now evolution of e ink. I think this is first color that can be worth buying.
Very good review. No fluff, all info.
Thank you.
4:49 I have been waiting this feature for so long. Slay e-ink tab❤
Great review, thanks. Would you say that the screen is particularly dark? Is the overall clarity good without the frontlight?
Very much seems like user-confgurable e-ink center shortcuts need to be included. To give users 2 or 3 profiles of e-ink settings they can instantly pop between. Like, 1 setting for black and white, one for color reading, and one for note-taking, etc.
Oh gosh I want an /e/ version of this.
microSD + Fast Experience + Colors + high DPI = instant buy
I was hoping that you would do a comparison between the b and w 300dpi screen with the kindle scribe
Yes, we are
@@goodereader thanks I really appreciate it. Being an owner of Onyx boox max 3 which is a bit too big for me, I love the idea of a 10 inch 300dpi onyx boox reader as kindle seems to lock you in to the ecosystem. I do however really like the look of the screen of kindle scribe so really want to get a feel for how the onyx boox ultra C screen compares with the kindle scribe in a lot of details especial in terms of how crisp the text is and the dreaded grey background. E.g. how much more grey is the background of the onyx ultra C? Is it negligible? Can't wait to watch your review which will hopefully address these questions.
Onyx Boox X color is what I'm hoping for!
Very impressive looking. I’m not sure I’d want a tablet rather than an E Ink phone though. I think if Hisense do Google Play officially, I’ll get one of those.
Could you do a colour comparison between the Tab Ultra C, inkNote Color+, and previous gen inkNote Color? That would be the most comprehensive, apples-to-apples 10.3" Kaleido screen tech overview. Thanks!
Yes, we are doing that right now. But please keep in mind, the tab ultra C and the inknote color plus have the exact same screen 100%
They're both supplied to each company by eating and they are the same panel in every conceivable way
But we will show how software plays into the equation :-)
Dude Suzuki Cappuccino is my dream car! Such a pleasure to see other gaijin who know what is up with the sporty kei cars \m/
Peter will be very happy to hear that :-) thank you
Gorgeous
I preordered one.... can't wait! I know I won't be using the Boox pen. I'll slap a doodroo screen protector and write with my Staedtler noris jumbo with titanium nibs.
Why is your other pen better
Woah, this person's comment right here.
That is one of the deepest levels of customizations you can do on an E note third-party pen, third-party screen protector, third-party tips
Well done
The writing feeling is delicious with the other pen imo
Can you check how well OneNote and Readwise Reader works on it?
Thank you very much for your video. Could you please release the comparison video with bigme's one with the same screen as soon as possible? Thank you very much! 😁
Yes, we have filmed that. I believe our editors are creating it right now
The refresh...🤔Problems?
Many times a I see that you have to get to the back page to refresh... What happens whit the automatic refresh? There is a refresh button?
Good E-reader.... The best in e-books information...!!
I am really impressed with the Boox UI, but i really wish they would have added an sd card slot to the Tab X.
Same as the Note air 2 plus but in color. I wish i could afford it. Maybe someday in my dreams lol i feel the color technology needs to improve a bit. it seems a little too light and pastel
I am currently working with the Note Air 2 Plus. I know that other products may give me a more "paperlike" feel, but with the original BOOX pen I geht a haptic and scratchy paperlike writing experience.
Now, I am very interested in working with colors. Compared to the Note Air 2 Plus is the haptics of writing similar on the Tab Ultra C? Or ist it "worse" (in the sense of writing on an iPad).
I bought the big Boox Tab X and returned it, because the writing experience was more or less an "iPad experience" - writing on glass.
So, in your opinion, is writing on the Tab Ultra C closer to the Note Air 2 Plus or to the Tab x?
Thanks for your reply on that.
Would also be interested in this. Anyone has experience? (especially the Channel Owner as he has used those tablets ;)
I'm using this for college classes. If i want to highlight and take notes from my textbook, do you suggest buying through Kindle and doing all of that there? if not, which format do you suggest?
Being bigger is size is it comfortable in reading ?
Any insider info about a nova air c refresh with kaleido 3 screen? ;)
I'm eagerly awaiting this news too
Does the note app allow to create filled shapes (rectangles etc.)?
Will you do a vs with bigme inknote color plus? I have the Bigme, and I'm think if worth the effort to buy boox too.
Yes, we are filming that right now
And now a 13 inch version. NOW!!!! 😢
This. With the ability to be used as a secondary monitor.
Fujitsu quaderno gen 3
Exactly my thought
@@sushi_carsThat would have been perfect if the screen was front-lit
Tab X C please!
battery performance?
Is there a way to sync or export notes from Boox's notetaking to OneNote? Great review, thanks.
Can you give me a link to a sample color pdf, epub, etc
Can you show web page browsing, where you scroll the page? Can you also show remote desktop software?
I hope Onyx will a make a monitro version(Boox Mira) like this tab.
what is the maximum custom canvas size you can put it?
this but with the remarkable screen surface would be perfect
If it had the Fujitsu screen surface it would be perfect :-)
Any predictions when will the color reader be available in bigger format e.g. 25 inches?
What about battery life? It is said it was bad at regular Tab Ultra. What about fingerprint reader, is it reliable and quick to login?
does it still have those tiny wavy lines in the background which make it black and grey more than black and white like Nova Air C?
Will that camera still stick out when using the normal magnetic case?
This is great. I mean books aren' perfect white too. At least most of my books. It's okay if it's not perfect white.
You jumped into HD mode right before demonstrating all the features that benefit from fast mode. Expanded canvas, lasso ... Made it look clunky.
Can I read it in dark ?
I'm waiting for an A4 version (13.3') before buying.
just imagine Kaleido 4
Haha, kaleido 3 literally just came out
People always wanting the next big thing is the exact reason they skipped the iPhone 9 xD
can it be used as second monitor of notebook with type-c plugin?in terms of resolution and refreshing rate。thanks
is it possible to search for a specific word through the hand notes?
The writing feel is not paper-like? What does this mean in comparison to devices like the Note Air 2? _cR
Tab ultra C vs Bigme inknote please
Yes, we are doing it right now.
@@goodereader thanks, my purchase depends on this review
the screen look very dark, is it a video lighting issue or is it really this dark?
The whites are not very white without the glow light are they?
So I'll pass for now.
Otherwise it seems perfect!
Does running video on ultrafast mode hurt the tablet's life?
Can I buy it from your site from Italy? What is the price in euros?
We have shipped everywhere in the world for the past 14 years
Boox should have a trade-in program for people that just bought a Tab Ultra.
It's pretty shitty releasing so suddenly the Tab Ultra C for so little price difference knowing a ton of us just barely got the Ultra.
Well, no, this is pretty much industry practice. Everyone releases their unit, and then subsequently follows it up with a color variant.
Mobiscribe wave, wave color.
BIGME pink note, inknote color.
Hisense a5, A5 color.
A7, a7cc color.
A5 pro, A5 Pro CC color.
Onyx books Nova air, Nova air C color.
Pocketbook ink pad, ink pad color.
The list goes on. This is very common in the industry
Hey, you could have bought a Note Air2 Plus just a few weeks before the Tab Ultra came out.... like I did.
Can I get it with Japanese vs the Chinese fonts? Is there a model (even one sold in Japan) that does this? I'm interested if the OCR can handle handwritten Japanese, not just the display, which even Kindles can do..
Would you say this is better than the kindle scribe? If so, I’m selling mine asap to buy this!
About 27 and a half times better, yes
Should have rp1 mode, b/w only and free of distrations.
Any plans on a 13" color e-ink tablet (ultra tab x c?)
The only company making large screen 13.3 in color is the Fujitsu. And it's not yet released
Can ONYX BOOX Tab Ultra C play video like Bigme Inknote Color+ does?
Yes
@@khamisa.5384 Users onyx boox
I have never seen anyone playing any video on this device particularly, neither could see any mention about this specification
We showed you
We show videos on literally every single ereader that supports it
@@goodereader Maybe you have got me wrong, my question was does ONYX BOOX Tab Ultra C support video play or not, if yes, show us
I'm a few video-reviews away of buying this thing. First I want to be completely sure this is the real deal.
It is
What app your using for manga ?
Can this be used a second screen for any other device like laptop or pc? I bet after some years the battery will degrade and we will basically have a good eink screen without being able to use it.
I was thinking about that but I don’t think they support to work as a monitor.
Yes, any Android device can be used as a secondary monitor
@@goodereader Hey, thanks for replying. So, this one in specific can be used as a monitor?
@@goodereader So can this device it?
Any Android device can be used as a secondary monitor
it still looks so dark without front light!
As far as I see, there are only two advantages to E-Ink tablets over other technologies: It doesn't emit light (unless you want it to), and the writing feel that should resemble pen on paper. In almost any other aspect, these tablets are inferior. As long as Onyx devices don't deliver the pen on paper experience, as with Sony DPT, for example, an iPad or Galaxy tab are better options. They do emit light, but you can reduce the blue light by software and screen protector, and they're faster, bigger, and just better in every aspect. If I wanted a read only device, like an E-reader or computer monitor, I'd consider E-ink.
Exactly this. I'm also fascinated by the tech, but if you want to look at animations in better, vivid colors, why don't go for a regular tablet with even more performance. I can see it as a drawing utility for artists and as a notebook, sure, but bridging the gap to regular tablets makes no sense. Even if the display doesn't wear out by constant screen refreshes, the selling points left are power consumption (if so) and reading experience.
And little to no eye strain, and low power consumption, and long battery life and less brittle screens
Yeah you're totally right. If you're ever asking yourself why don't I just buy a tablet, then this channel is absolutely not for you. Because epaper is a multi-million dollar industry in and of itself and is not a Small industry
@@goodereader Why isn't this channel for me? I'm looking for a device to replace tons of papers for studying. I don't need all the fancy iPad experience for that, but the iPad (pro) is faster, bigger, has many apps tailor made for note taking, and the only major disadvantage is some eye strain (the battery life isn't a big issue for me). However, since I'm only using it for note taking, Id gladly replace it with an E-ink device that has true paper feel and is a little bigger. Something like a cross between a Fujitsu Quaderno 13.3, and this Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C. Onyx can easily make such a model, if they only wanted to.
@@Crayon826 E-ink is so fast-growing. Every year we have better and better options. E-ink helps you to save your vision. Don't you get it?
I want the dead to head with bigme inknote color plus
Hey simon, yes they are using 100% the exact same screen in every single possible way, but they are filming that as we speak :-)
@@goodereader I know it’s the same screen, however bigme has more ram different cpu boox has the gpu, so that along with software may mean different performance of screen refresh etc
Is the experiencia taking notes more slippery than bigme?
That is really one of the only things we can talk about In the comparison that we're filming right now. Because big me and Onyx are using the exact same screen
do you know something about 13.3 version ?
Yes, Fujitsu quaderno gen 3
Is the screen protector factory installed?
Yes
No one is doing a battery test. How much battery % is used in 8 hours to flip 200 pages over 3 hours, surf the internet (say Wikipedia) for 1 hour, watch a 1 hour video, type for 1 hour, and handwrite for 1 hour, and type for 1 hour.
Yes, unfortunately we have mentioned this numerous times throughout hundreds of our videos. It's not easy for us to do battery tests, especially for a device that came out 3 days ago
Everyone uses their devices differently, everyone uses different levels of wireless connectivity, bluetooth, wi-fi, etc, some people don't use the pen, some people use the Wacom pen which triggers maybe more or less battery drain than the capacitive layer
Audio, golight, etc. The amount of variables are staggering and the real battery life never lines up with the advertised battery life
So yes, unfortunately especially for new devices, it's simply not possible. Because even if we share our findings, they're not going to coincide with anyone else's experience
"Hey everyone, good e-reader has concluded that you get 7 days of battery life"
"That's not what I get!"
"Mine dies in two days, help me with a warranty"
"I get a full month"
Etc etc
But thanks for the comment
I am sure these color panels will be everywhere one day, but for now, it just doesn't make sense for the cost and very low dpi in color. If you want color, buy an iPad, but even a tablet has become useless for my daily,, I use a zFold and now a kindle scribe for notes and pdf files, laptop for the rest,
nice vide, haw much is it?
Over 2,800 videos on our Channel. Description is down below
I'm actually kinda giddy.
I hate writing on glass, how they flubbed that is beyond me. 😞 If this was even remotely close to how writing on the Remarkable 2 is I'd buy it in a second.
Has it a keyboard?
Yes
FIRST! 😁
But it's not up yet. Haha
How are you seeing it?
@@goodereader A link at the end of your unboxing video, alas it says "We're processing this video. Check back later" 😊 anyways, can't wait to watch another dedicated, great up-coming review from you!
Oh I see. I guess the production team is working on it :-)
No wacom?
Yes of course it has
None of these reviews are showing color comics on these screens, it's always disappointing. But I bet that's because it just doesn't look great 😅
We already showed all of that on the big me note color plus
@@goodereader true, and it was greatly appreciated, but it wasn't really in depth, and is a different eink panel type if I remember correctly? It'd be nice to have a full demo on different lighting condition with color comics reading from Kindle or marvel unlimited.
With a normal tablet as a reference point. I know the color will never be the same on these, but it's hard to know how good/bad the colors are without a point of reference.
Please look at our channel, it was quite in-depth. We did several videos on it.
Kaleido 2 vs 3
Kaleido 3 vs gallery
Kaleido vs rlcd
Kaleido 3 vs literally everything
And an actual review on kaleido 3
So I'm not sure how much more in depth we can get it after having done about six videos on it already
We are working as hard as we possibly can on everything. We get two samples a day right now, everyone from mudita to pocketbook, Xiaomi, benq, etc
We'll get up content as soon as we can :)
@@goodereader
I apologize if it seemed like a bad critic, it wasn't meant that way, and you do an awesome job with your reviews.
And I did already watch your videos about the comparison of each screen, but as I said, almost no real case scenario like color comic book pages, and showing the same pages on a good IPS screen as reference (not to say it's better or worse, just to show what kind of color we kind expect compared to normal screens).
Because it's very hard from your vid only to see the big picture.
But hey it's only my suggestion, I am not a professional reviewer and I certainly do not want to tell you how to do your job.
At the end of the day you do what you think is best for your videos and the general public 😉
