  • Sony A7S III vs Canon EOS R5 made me divorce Canon for video - but for a different reason than everyone else...
    It really helps me as a new creator if you would like the video and subscribe. THANK YOU!

    First we battle the cameras. Others have done the work, we enjoy the fruits:
    - Image: Signal/Noise, Dynamic Range, Image and Motion Stability, Gradients, Color Science, Sharpness
    - Handling: Just Works, Day & Night, Easy to Edit, Easy to Focus, Frame Rates, Weight, Lens Convenience & Availability
    Then we also go into another, different aspect, which I haven't seen analyzed that potentially supersedes all of the above. Watch complete video to find out.

    Another aspect to consider is which company acts on what their customers have been asking for and what the market realistically needs! For me, apart from the killer video (visual) features that Sony provided in the A7sIII, it is the fact that they totally redesigned the body and menu system to a point that not only satisfies their customers previous complaints but now also satisfies this Canon user since 1983. When I saw last week that Associated press were switching to Sony, I was amazed, however when Sony released the A7sIII a few days later, I then totally understood. I cancelled my R5 preorder as soon as I saw Gerald Undone’s confirming video. I shall now build up a Sony system for my lowlight video needs to complement my Panasonic Gh5 system but shall continue using Canon for my stills (until Sony does the same game-changer improvements with their A7IV ). 🙏🏾

      Great to hear that story. Then we are in the same boat :-) Yes I considered ordering 2 A7sIII, built then decided to only order 1 for now because I think just like you, there will come an A7IV which will then become the B cam for video and the photo cam.

      If I was only a video shooter, and never needed to crop still, etc, I would get the Sony.. But there was a few things on this reviewers list I had some issues with. Sony, from what I am reading, also for 10bit, uses the same codec 265 4:2:2 codec. (let me know if I read this wrong) no video cards for Mac or PC (as of now) support this 10Bit Codec. What I found was 8K RAW played fine at 30FPS on my 8 core 5GHZ PC (LOL) but the 10 bit 4:2:2 265 at 4K, was a pain and slow.

    I feel the stock price comparison is misleading. Canon may be suffering in the camera market but that’s also all they are relatively known for (along with printers and some other camera related tech). Sony on the other hand has diversified themselves across a multitude of products in multiple industries including console gaming, audio, televisions, etc. I feel stock prices are just an inaccurate metric for measurement in this context.

    • @ossme
      @ossme 4 роки тому +1

      You are correct; Stock prices have nothing to do with it. Canon's portfolio is full of products in shrinking segments (cameras, printers, multifunction devices... etc.). Sony, on the other hand, has many products in growing segments (console gaming, consumer electronics, semiconductors ... etc.).
      This makes Canon, as a company, unattractive for investors. When you look at the annual revenue, on the other hand, both companies are stuck in terms of growth. Sony is averaging around $75 billion (an average of 7% from the imaging segment). In comparison, Canon is averaging about $40 billion a year (an average of 23% from the imaging segment).
      None of this is related to our discussion, since a company like Fuji, which is far smaller than both, is making great camera products.
      Mr. Larsson, I understand that you want to switch systems, Just pick whatever camera you like. You don't need to create smart reasons.

      You are absolutely right. I considered going further into that, but the video was getting wayyy too long already. Yes, that's that's the whole point: Because Sony is diversified, they are sustainable as the camera market is changing. Capture devices are changing into multi-sensors plus software. I think Sony is well positioned for that. Clearly the market thinks Canon isn't. But the market can be wrong, that's where the opportunities are. Do you think Canon will turn it around?

    Thanks for sharing! I feel you're absolutely on point about the lenses: I'm hoping that Sony take a fresh look at some of their primes in light of the new era of 4K and Live Eye AF. As well as the faster linear motors, they really need to have a range of OSS options. I've got a nice gimbal, but it's not always an available option, especially if I'm travelling light or in confined spaces. I'd definitely be up to pay extra to have OSS on board (as well as/instead of IBIS).
    Speaking of video: now that we have full frame sensors with high dynamic range and fantastic low-light performance, do you think the humble camcorder should be revisted?
    When I think of the Sony FX-9 and the Sony A7Siii, I can't help but wonder if there's a market for something in the middle (that's got A7SIii features but maybe FX form factor).
    Just a thought!

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks mate for very valid points and insights. Agree completely! I really hope Sony steps up the OSS game. I'm still not quite sure if it's a product management consideration or if there is a fundamental difference between the E mount and the RF mount. Could it be the diameter of the E mount makes it harder to build? Not sure.
      Agree on the Gimbal. I also have a great one. Almost never use it. Just too time consuming for the incremental increase in quality for the casual videos I'm doing - and I think that's the trend. The iPhone can shoot almost perfectly stabilized photos, and people's tolerance to fiddle with a gimbal is pretty low.
      I actually do think the camcorder is a great form factor, like the FX9 with a zoom and a mic on top, it's almost like a big camcorder. A smaller version of that would be pretty great for most things.

  • @YBijan

    I want to do both: stills photography AND recording videos! And in both cases I want to get best quality!
    Due to the fact, the A7SIII offers only 12 MP it is not a real option for taking pictures!
    The second reason for preffering Canon is the fact, I have already purchased many EF lenses.
    So, my questions are...
    1. Is it such a big difference watching videos in 4k 120 fps made by the Canon EOS R5 or the Sony A7SIII?
    2. How good would my EF lenses fit to the Sony A7SIII when using an adapter? What s about aperture and focus? Would it work as perfect as when used by a Canon EOS R5 with adapter?

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому +2

      True. Personally, I'm done with adapters. Even Canon EOS R with the Canon EF to Canon RF adapter, it never worked as well as with the RF native lenses. Often some subtle issues with AF accuracy, hunting, brief locking up or similar. Will never go that route again and will definitely not try it again across brands. But that's just me, I have very low tolerance with stuff that doesn't work as it should. I like perfection :-)
      Video work on the R5: Yes, it's a big difference because you might miss the shot. Overheating is very real on the R5. At least for me, I would need 2 bodies to alternate between and that just doesn't fly.

    You make great points, thank you for sharing this analysis! My R5 arrives tomorrow and I'm going to put it through its paces. For me, I'm shooting with multiple Canon cameras and having a common lens collection I can share between them is important, as is having similar color science between cameras. Dan Watson did a heat test and the A7S III overheated faster than the R5 in a hot environment. It seems that if you shoot video with external recording, the R5 can last around 75 minutes before overheating in 4KHQ with 8k pixel binning, and the codec problem is solved too. Sony definitely made a great camera with the A7S III but I'm sticking with Canon for now because I'm already so invested into their ecosystem and can work around the limitations.

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому

      Yes the external recorder does a lot to relieve the processor and thus heat generation. Also something I mentioned in the previous video, I'm pretty sure that in a studio setup like that, you can use a dummy battery (to avoid heat generation from the battery draining) and stick a big contact heat gel pad on the backside under the screen (flip it out) and dissipate heat a lot more effectively that way. Should give you quite long recording times even in the 4kHQ mode.
      The existing lenses and matching color science is definitely important. The colors are quite different and Sony and Canon also measure whitebalance very differently.

How is such a declining company can afford to be "sleeping"?? Canon was always behind when in comes to video in their hybrid cameras. The R5 is definitely a superior PHOTO camera and this is Canon's first real attempt to cater to the video people (or at least to pretend that they wanted to cater to us) and that is why it overheats. Canon never really put an effort in video and that is why they never overheated before. Again, as the video suggests it, they realized that the average consumer is not gonna buy a big camera for photos and would rather use their smartphone but the average filmmaker will and that is where the future is heading so now they want to wake up but they have to start from the bottom and experience the same problems Sony had when they woke up in the video mirrorless game a couple of years ago with the A6300. How is Sony little? How was Sony waiting? Are you referring to PHOTO again cause to me it seems like Canon waited and now they attempted to throw a shot but they missed. They can keep their PHOTOGRAPHY dominance because according to these numbers and their clear attempt to get in the good favors of Filmmakers, it does not help their company.

      @@jpemile There is no comparison, the R5 is a superior camera, no doubt. period. But Canon is a camera&lens and Sony is a tech company that does cameras&lenses. Canon should be wiping floors with Sony's cameras like it used to do. Not the case. It's like saying the new canon smartphone is as good as the flagship sony expedia phone. I feel Canon got played by Sony. Reviewers had the a7siii a week before anyone got the R5. The A7siii launch is at the last minute, just in type to cancel pre-orders son the R5. Even C200 C300 have slashed prices and upped features. That is why the stock is down. I am routing for Canon here, don't get me wrong. The R5 is a step in the right direction. I'm interested mostly on video features. If you want a good camera for photos take the higher resolution sensor as there is no much improvements left în the photo area. If you want it for video, you have to look at more things: the image quality (color depth, rolling shutter, line skipping, artefacts) the maximum frames per second (does the compression degrade the image? Do you have sound at 120p?), the codec and how easy is it to grade/edit? The limits because of overheating or because of the software built in the camera but there's something you forgot: sound, you photographers always forget sound. sony has 4 channels of audio with an adapter that accepts xlr inputs. And how much you have to rig it to have everything you want from it? A ND filter, maybe? Or maybe an aditional audio recorder? But what about redoundancy recording or media types future proof? I could continue...

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому +2

      Yes good insights. Agree, all photo centric cameras take stunning photos today. The incremental improvement from the 1dx mk2, released in 2016, to the best camera today - for photography - are small. You can't tell the difference from the image alone. The differences in video is larger, because it's a harder technical problem to repeat the photo up to 100+ times a second indefinitely, than to repeat it 10+ times a second in a short burst.
      Very good point on the audio connectivity. Not sure if you saw my other videos, but I've struggled enormously with audio to the point I rebuilt the whole studio. Video is easy. Audio is hard.

    Not everyone is looking at these cameras just for video, as you said, for photo, the balance swings the other way of course people want the perfect in both aspects, and no such camera is being released like that as of now, while these cameras are released at the same time and share some features, they are somewhat different and not going at each other's throats, even though the whole UA-cam think they do and they can make comparisons like this all day long.
    Apart from the ultra-wide wobbling which they might tweak with firmware, I think the Canon IBIS+IS looks a lot better (even alone it is very effective) so I would give them the clear win there.
    I don't think Sony can do a 15-35 2.8 with IS with the E-mount. With the RF mount, the rear element gets bigger, but even like that there is a huge amount of vignetting at 15mm f/2.8, so it is right at the limit of what they can design. It also feels great in the hand with a menu system that does not change with every generation, there are just things with Canon cameras that work in a similar manner while it is constantly changing with Sony (like the colours, they will continue to change), and they never really settle. That matters for some people.
    Canon's product strategy is a bit different regarding video, but they will do a more serious video cameras with RF-mount at some point, so I wouldn't worry about the RF system, it has a solid future, they know exactly what they are doing.
    With huge companies like this with many divisions, it is difficult to determine how their camera division fares from the share price, Sony for instance has a big lead with manufacturing smartphone sensors, which Canon does not do.

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for a great and very valid comment. I think the Canon IBIS+IS is stellar for shots where the whole frame moves together (see my 96 ways to stabilize video) while I think the corner wobble on PM's first vlogs on the R5 gave those scenes the maybe worst look I've seen coming out of his youtube channel for years actually. I agree with you, I think they will change this in firmware. Interesting insight with the E-mount. You mean the problem is the size (diameter) of the E mount? For many vignetting isn't such a big problem because you can opt to correct for it in lens correction.
      Yes like I mentioned in the sensor analysis video, the step from 14 bit 20 fps 45 MP raw "photos" in the R5 and 24 fps 14 bit 8k raw video is just a 20% speed bump - which is nothing, so clearly Canon must already have a cinema camera near ready which can do that.
      Agree, the reason the market values Sony differently is that they are diversified differently. I decided to not go into that on the video, but you are absolutely right. I also think that will position Sony better for the next phase of capture devices which will have more many sensors instead of just one.

  • @hardworksmart
    @hardworksmart 4 роки тому +5

    Very good points, Larsson, as always - but I'd like to shake the party a little bit.
    You don't have to buy any new camera, nor any youtube creator out there, in fact. All today's purchases will be obsolete next year. Next year there will be another camera, and the following year another. Your EOS R or my Olympus EM-1mk2 are just fine for what we do - they are also way out of reach of beginner youtubers financially - and there's really no need for anything more than that to make pro quality content.
    You could buy an Arri Alexa, sure, but I am not watching your content for the camera, but for the story. I would still watch you even if you filmed on your iPhone :)
    So I think that there could be an additional line in your table called "Psychological Comfort of the Creator" - because those decisions to switch systems and to buy new cameras are mainly that - they provide psychological comfort for insecure creators that think that "Now that I have the R5/A7s3/other" my quality is OK and I am not letting down my public.
    But I am sure nobody complained to you that you publish in 1080 or that your 4k has a 1.7x crop on the EOS R right now :))
    That's why I am sticking with my EM1mk2, even though it's not full frame (which is actually a good thing IBIS-wise) and there's already an mk3.

The only thing I don’t like about a7r4 is the lack of touch screen, articulated screen and lack of multiple raw formats, which are all in r5 with I believe almost close to Sony in eye tracking too. But glasses for r5 ridiculously prized. Being a7s3 announced with all these features, I believe it is best in investing in a7r4 for future proof. What is your thoughts b/w these cameras? I don’t care about video features at all? I was a nikon shooter, and I tried Z camera, didn't like much. So I'm planning to jump into sony or canon; I don't have glasses for either of these brands. Will there any chance for sony a7r4 t get these updated features of touch screen, updated menu and multi raw formats by a firmware update? Any thoughts on these decision making would be really helpful and really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

      I think both the R5 and the a7r4 are stellar photography cameras. Both the RF and EF lens systems are superb for photography. Still, personally I'm going to get neither for photography but wait until later this year.
      I'm betting we will get one more Sony camera better suited for photography, maybe a7 IV?, with some other goodies from the a7SIII like touch screen, better EVF, updated menus etc. At that point I'll evaluate and commit for photography. Also maybe then Canon has fixed some of the worst issues with the R5, so that will be an interesting comparison too.

  • @locker1964

    For me only the comparison between the SH1 and the 7SIII would make sense. The R5 is for me to 80% a photo camera with video functionalities. For wedding photographers it is also only a second camera to the RIII/RIV and here the question arises, do I really need the SIII for my job?

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому

      Agree. Yes the R5 is definitely a photo camera. Many people like me placed pre-orders for the R5 thinking it was a the promised "pro video spec version" of the EOS R, released about 2 years ago. Actually I just learned today that some Canon employees thought so too. Turns out it wasn't. It's a superb photo camera that was marketed wrong.

  • @Quivver77
    @Quivver77 4 роки тому +4

    The R5 should have been a successor to the 5d Mark iv...it was a mistake to sell it as a video camera. As a wildlife photographer I look at it as a better version of the D850 or competition for the Sony a7r III. The 8k is just a cherry on top - it's not meant to be the USP. Not sure why Canon let this narrative take hold when they obviously knew about the overheating aspect during testing. They could have made it a great action shooter with their excellent AF (animal and eye) but this overheating problem is a real deal breaker for me.

      Agree, it's a superb camera for photography-only. For even casual video work, it just won't fly - unless we're fine with EOS R quality video, which can now be bought used for 1/5 of the price.

    • @Quivver77
      @Quivver77 4 роки тому

      @@DavCro The deal breaker for me is the lag the R5 has when shooting burst frames at max FPS in mechanical shutter mode. This negates the brilliance of the AF tracking for me because every shot you take there is a lag between when the OTF is refreshed. I had hoped the R5 would be lagfree like the Sony A9 has been. But alas we might just need to wait for the R1 or R1x to get those features.

    The 15-35 2.8 is great on specs and sharpness etc but it seems the big compromise that had to be made for the extended range is vignetting at all focal lengths. It's horrendous and especially when Canon is a little behind in dynamic range still (although improving) it means the noise in edges and corners is always going to be much greater.

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому

      Yes maybe you saw the "96 ways to stabilize footage". In there I did a little bit of lens test actually though I didn't put all of it in the video. The RF was actually pretty sharp in the corners, certainly much better than the Canon EF 16-35. Vignetting true though it never bothered me in actual use.

I am slightly inclined towards Canon for their glass as well, however if A7sIII can produce amazing low light videos (referring to Phillip Bloom's video) then the glass doesn't really matter. I think I'll wait and see if there's any improvement/s after the rumoured firmware upgrade for the R5, then perhaps it'd be a good idea to revisit this comparison (preferably with a hands-on review). Surely adding a bit better heat conductivity can't be that difficult?

      That's the point: Sony will afford to continue doing this, while I see a huge question mark on whether Canon can. (And I suppose office printers aren't exactly a growth area either).
      The brand value of Canon is much more than 25% in the camera division, since no one really cares what brand of office scanner they have or what the brand of the medical device is.

      @nunosantos8784 4 роки тому

      @@ctoLarssonTECH Thanks for the reply. That´s a good point, aside of both brands have diversified business, Sony is seen not only by the camera division, well at least to me, I see sony as a TV company and the PS4 of my son, and Canon is identified as a photography brand with related products as the fine art printers. For investors it may be a bad thing, but to me is a good thing, like when Leica split the survey division from the rest. Well, but that´s my opinion and a bit conservative, but honestly i prefer a company like Nikon, that only focus on photography (aside of belonging to the Mitsubishi corporation), than a electronics company that decide to make photo cameras.
      Regarding the point about Canon continue doing this...? This, you mean photography? Really...? You think is that bad? Sony is doing much better than the others on the full frame market, but I believe is the sensor division is giving them the funds for research. I believe that Sony will keep growing and increase the numbers of users, but you must agree that is more known and praised in this youtube community than in "real life" of professional photographers. the vast majority of youtubers that make the reviews are not photographers, and the hardcore photographers are not youtubers. For those, brands like Canon or Nikon, still have the edge on reliability, probably the main feature they care about, and of course the technical support from the brand, like the CPS, far ahead from the rest.
      This is just an example of the point I want to make: petapixel.com/2020/04/17/the-cameras-that-shot-the-winning-photos-of-world-press-photo-2020/
      I´m not saying that will be forever if the brands like Canon and Nikon can´t give what the photographers needs, but I think with this R5, (and also with the 1DxIII) definitely is going in the right direction.
      On the other end when Sony started the a7 series, they did not have an alignment and a concrete vision of what they wanted, as their CEO stated in 2013 that the characteristic that best defined their system was its size and portability in relation to DSLRs. Today we know that it is not true, look at the huge lenses, and they already trying to increase the size of the bodies, as happened with the a7rIV and the recent a7SIII. But there is still another problem to solve, which is the size of the lens mount, admittedly an error that limits several aspects in lens design and IBIS, which I don't understand how they will solve. Another point that for professionals has never been seen as positive, is the continuous launch of cameras. Launching 4 models of the same series in 6 years, it does not value the product nor does it give a sign of reliability and confidence, as this is normally related with consumer products and not professional products, which if added to the problems of build quality and sealing, it did not help to create the image of a premium product, despite paying a premium price.

So the only place they have regressed is in sensor and mirrorless and even there in terms of the tech I think they've made up ground. Sony is just a much broader consumer electronics player and have stepped up their game in the last 10 years.

    Good video, although I'd argue that:
    1) 'Frame Rates' is a tie (Canon already leaked 240fps mode)
    2) 'Easy to Edit' will also be a tie with a simple firmware/software update
    3) 'Motion Stability' will soon be in Canon's favor now that they're implementing the ability to disable it, and its stronger/better for telephoto
    4) The missing 'Photo Mode' would have Canon winning that category by a landslide
    In the end, the two cameras are both amazing, although based on your personal needs, the Sony is still the better choice for you. That being said, I think you're seriously downplaying how amazing the R5 is. I personally have evaluated both, and am opting for the R5, as my needs differ from yours.

      I'm adding a few lines because our friend Larsson is loosing his common sense listening Gerald and Max (2 Sony fanboys, probably paid), just k :)
      - s/n: it is NOT 2x2 in the A7S, it is just one bigger pixel cell. You will have less noise with more megapixels on the R5, it is standard thing with digital camera.
      - dynamic range: clog as more contrast by default than slog3 it makes no sense to compare the DR based on that, DR should be compared once colored graded and matched on the same scene or with a similar picture profile! Once you add contrast to slog3 you just get the same dynamic range. I think I saw a good example of that in one of the comparisons, maybe Dan Watson. If Canon activates clog2 or 3 on the R5 you will get a more flat profile with more DR if you like that style, but that's the opposite of the "canon colors" that people like.
      - The IBIS of the R5 is GH5 level what is your problem people?!?! The wobble on the corners is due to the lens distortion on wide angle combined with the movement of the sensor, why nobody knows that? It is like that on my GH5 too. There is no IS in the G-Master lenses (except 70-200), Sony is far behind on this one.
      - The codecs is the most ridiculous point so far. No reviewers with the A7S3 has used a CF Xpress to record with the 600mbps new codec, they all used SDs and the 100-200Mbps h264 codecs (try to color-grade that crap and let me know) and Macbooks (laptops, seriously?) to edit: stop it Mac are slow as hell, I have 2 I know what i'm saying. My editing PC AMD 3960X + 2080Ti + Nvme has no problem to edit Gordon Laing files from the R5. You guys are not going anywhere with a Mac for editing high res codecs if you don't use ProRes. The standardization of h265 will get you doomed with Apple - Why do you think they are stopping with Intel?
      - Like everyone that really owns both a Canon Eos R/1Dx and Sony Alphas, I will never trust Sony's AF for video IT IS HUNTING (GH5 style but better though) in continuous. It is better than Canon only for stills in my own experience (A7iii). If some of you are switching to Sony, you are going to cry...
      The tracking says I will get my R5 Tuesday... I'll confirm all that then.

      Yes this is all based on current capabilities. Should capabilities change, score changes too :-)
      1) True if they add it, I will update
      2) True if they add it, I will update
      3) True if they add it, I will update. Now the update actually went in the wrong direction. Before you could disable/enable the lens IS separately, now they are tied together with the latest lens & camera firmware update I saw. Or have you seen they confirmed changing this?
      4) What does it mean, photo mode? In the video I said "Because where the R5 beats the current Sony offering out of the park, is in professional photography, like large print size. Then most of this chart doesn't matter. What matters then is this row."
      Cheers mate, thank for the comment!

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  4 роки тому +1

      Haha I' lost my sense many years ago 😆
      - S/N: You have less noise with one big pixel than with many small. See previous video for calculation.
      - DR: Yes the picture profile definitely matters here. Dynamic range measurement is most useful when using a Signal-to-noise cut-off, meaning it's "usable dynamic range".
      - IBIS: See my video on 96 ways to stabilize. I had actually prepared a section in this video too about difference between Lens IS and IBIS but it was too long already. Absolutely right, you can't fix the type of distortion you get on wide angle when moving the lens, by moving the sensor in the opposite direction or something. That's why it "wobbles" when trying to do that.
      - Very true on the codecs. The R5 has eg higher bitrate on 120 fps. This hasn't been measured well yet.
      - Did you notice that at the precise moment I said "Autofocus is great" in the video, autofocus went off track. I swear I didn't do that on purpose lol
      Looking forward to hearing your findings when you get your machine!

    I think you are mistaken with the lenses. Until you start trying out the Sony lenses, you really cant say. For instance, used every uwa from canon sony, and then tried the 17-28...... to me, it was shocking how much I liked it and for a few reason you stated "Is With You". having used the 11-24, 12-24, and wider, I thought my world would end with such a narrow range, but instead, I forced myself to try it, and absolutely love it. It's half the weight of the 15-35..... add on the 28-200, which is optically fantastic, and you have an entire kit of lenses that can fit into a Peak Design 3L, crazy small bag. Tamron 70-180 can replace the Canon 70-200 RF, weighs less, costs less, but relys on IBIS unfortunately, so at the mercy of better sony bodies. micro small 2.8 lenses are also a fun thing that does not exist with canon, and never existed before on any FF DSLR platform. Samyang 18, 24, 35, 45 "Is With you" factor up the wazoo. Very inexpensive, so you can try without much pain. I decided to stick with the zooms after trying them all because they were small enough. Never really had a problem with low light..... once you start experiencing the sony selection of lenses, it's a bit different than theory :)

      You are right. I had an R5 pre-order in since spring. Up until a few weeks ago, I thought the R5 would be the promised pro video upgrade of the EOS R, released in 2018, now dated. In fact, today I learned that some Canon employees thought so too - all the way through the launch two weeks ago. Clearly it isn't. It's a photo camera. But then where is the video camera replacing the EOS R for mirrorless video work? Is that the R6? Hardly, released with IPB, no 4k/120 and still overheating. Means they don't have it. The only work-around right now would be to buy 2x or even 3x R5's to alternate with, or stick with the EOS R.
      Still you are right. The a7S III isn't a pro photo camera. So the comparison right now is really 2x R5 vs. 1x a7S III + 1x A7R IV. That's two bad options if you need both photo and video.
      So I agree with you. Canon will probably come back with a redesigned body, adding a heat sink etc, maybe for both the R5 and the R6. Sony will probably come out with an A7 IV. Then it will be an interesting comparison again! :-)

      Yes I think so too. Thought to make another video on the R6. Right now it fails on two main points. Note it was actually the R6, not the R5, that cinema5d used where I mentioned him. Also IPB only makes for a lousy workflow. And finally no 120 fps for B rolls. If I could advice Canon at this point, it would be to reposition the R5 for photo and completely redesign the R6 firmware to try to mitigate those issues: Add All-I, 120 fps and fix overheating.

    EXACTLY!!! Why did Canon go out of their way to focus marketing on 8K Video when they could have marketed all the great photo features and parameters? Who really cares right now about 8K video and if it overheats and turns off anyway then essentially it doesn't work. If their intent was to make a great video camera then nail the 4K without overheating or line skipping and mention that it is capable of 8K in bursts. The R5 seems like it has so much potential to be a great photo camera (pending more review and real use) but trying to be a better video camera than ones intended for video just doesn't fly. In Physics and engineering nothing is free. One thing balances another. Canon simply is trying to make this one size fits all camera and Sony brought the beat down stick out to let them know that won't work. Canon has such a fantastic lens lineup though.

    Wow, had to comment to say what a refreshingly interesting video [perspective]. Ultimately though, I think it's like others have said... R5 = Stills camera that shoots some video, A7S III = Video camera that can shoot stills. Although they were designed as such; as you pointed out, perhaps Canon dropped the ball on marketing. I do wonder how much of this Canon overheating is just something going viral (re: Narrative Economics, Nobel Prize (close to home?) winner Robert Shiller), and not as bad as perceived? Case in point, videos showing up that the A7S III overheated before that R5 outdoors. It's still early (too early?) days and not enough cameras "out in the wild" to be *completely* conclusive? 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I really like the stock market/equity reference. But the dips generally speaking were all short term (5 years if I recall as it came up on the video briefly). Is it a completely fair, encompassing representation of long term of prospects? After all, as Benjamin Graham said "In the short run, the market is a voting machine but in the long run, it is a weighing machine." Look at Tesla's stock price for example, no where near company earnings. In the stratosphere! While it doesn't mean Tesla isn't a great company, but it's stock price is *absurdly* overpriced. Speculation may not be reality, as seen time and time again...

      The R5 overheating is real. I personally think they need to pull it back and do a hardware iteration to improve the heat conductivity. Maybe they can fix that pretty fast. I hope so for the future of Canon.
      You are right about the comparison of the companies. There is much more to be said there, but the video was getting too long :-) The thing is that Sony is well diversified at this point and shareholders are happy. That means they can afford to keep innovating in peace and keep pushing out fun stuff to camera lovers even though the market is potentially shrinking.
      Canon on the other hand is 50% office stuff, like office printers (I guess hardly a promising growth market either), 25% this camera market, 12% medical, and the rest "other". With that business mix and that value destruction for their shareholders, will they be given another 2-5 years to get their act together on mirrorless cameras? Don't know.

    First of all, the R5 and A7S3 are not comparable cameras as such. "One size fits them all" doesn't exist yet and will never exist! I realized from the beginning, that the R5 is a very good stills camera. Unfortunately Canon's marketing pushed the video side with it's 8k capabilities. As a primarily stills shooter, the R5 could have been the camera of my choice 2.5 years ago, when I got my A9. As a now long time Sony shooter, starting in 2014 with the A7S because of it's FF low light and silent shutter capabilities, I kept moving to the higher resolution A7RII and then to the A9 for it's fast AF. Along with it came all the lenses from 10mm (Voigtländer) up to 600mm. Canon could have had all this money, if they had a competing FF DSLM product family starting in 2014. Also I like Sony's "one mount open specification" strategy, that allows 3rd parties to take full advantage of the E-mount. As a customer, I can now chose from excellent 3rd party lenses, specifically designed and optimised for E-mount. Lens convenience based on just one missing lens is simply short sighted. Even if I would start today, moving from mobile phone to something better, I would still choose Sony. Why? Because they have currently the largest ecosystem for DSLM's of all the suppliers and dominate the sensor technology. From A6100 all the way to the Venice. One mount!

      (What is the life expectancy for a body? about...five years?) Buying may be cyclical.
      As a customer base we have been trained look past the hype and look to our UA-cam teams to test and report. Manufacturers are on the hook to not promise too much and disappoint.
      I think yes, Canon has five years to develop 8k in a typical photographer's camera body. I'm just not sure what targeted market is out there for that level of file management. (maybe in five years we'll all be ready for it?)

    Canon has another bigger problem in my opinion
    What happens if their users all refuse to buy what is essentially seen as a "beta" camera and prefer to wait until all the hardware issues (overheating, recording time limits, inability to write video to both memory cards etc) are resolved in their next model update?
    It is highly unlikely that all the issues can be fixed in firmware because Canon would have to have been very very stupid not to have done it before announcing the R5 and R6 - but Canon has been known to deliberately cripple their cameras so this may still be a (small) possibility
    This is called the "Osborne Effect" and sent that market leading computer company bankrupt, Canon's camera division could suffer the same fate as that of Olympus's (becomes unprofitable and is then sold off to protect the parent company)
    Smile, we might be having another "Kodak Moment", because a new camera typically takes a few years in development by which time users have long gone to another brand and it's just too late to catch up
    I hope I'm wrong but Kodak, Nokia and Blockbuster etc say otherwise

      What an excellent comment! I just went and refreshed my memory on the Osborne Effect actually, haven't thought about that one in a long time. Good point!!
      Correct, I they reasonably can't fix this in firmware only, just maybe tune it a bit. The heat conduit is missing. While it's simple, if it's not there, it's not there. The air inside the unit acts as an excellent insulator, which is why it takes a full 2 hours to cool down even if it's cold on the outside. Now it's built like a thermos.
      Who in their right mind is going to go buy the current R5/R6 for video today? Not many. If not switching, they would wait right, just like you point out - because surely it can be fixed with a slight hardware redesign. Photographers will buy it today, but how big share is that? If we assume it's 1/2, sales will be down 50% from expectation. That's huge and would turn this from a profitable product to a hugely unprofitable one. And given where the company is already, maybe that was the final straw.
      There will be business books written about these events. Exciting to watch and interesting to see how this will play out!

    of all the Japanese photo-video companies (but I repeat myself), it's only Sony which has been successful in the last 2 decades. Canon is not unique in its decline. That's the problem with Japanese economy generally. All those companies are basically zombie companies, treading on a safe trail and stagnating while at the same time getting propped by artificially cheap credit available in Japan. There's just no incentive for them to really innovate. More accolades for Sony then.

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 4 роки тому +1

    Yes, first perceptions are important. The GH5 launched with under-cooked AF. Over time firmware upgrades fixed that and GH5 AF is now excellent, but the majority og non-GH5 users still think the AF is poor. I think the R5 is a brilliant camera, and the overheating is an irrelevancy because the worst parts of overheating occurs in the things that nobody is likely to use, or, if 4K120, it is the sort of thing needed for short clips only. Canon would have been better off leaving the 8K out, and doing what Sony did. People would have loved it, but now Sony is the one getting the love when it is a one-trick pony, and the R5 is more of a photo/video hybrid, which is more useful. Someone should take the gun out of Canon’s hand, because the shot themselves in the foot by going for the 8K aura.

      Unfortunately I have Canon lenses and do mainly video. Then the two comparisons you suggest are not what I needed. I was hoping the R5 would hold up better for video work. Clearly it doesn't. Hi CTO Larsson,
    It is interesting that I value the work done by TLDR, Gerald, and yourself. And ironically and/or coincidently, all of you have chosen the A7S3. The common thread is that all of you are fact-base, technically knowledgeable, and understand on what matters in real world use.
    I hope you don’t mind that I copy and paste my response to TLDR and Gerald to you as as I would appreciate that you could validate my assumptions below. There’s no pride in authorship since I want to see if this can be solved for. It will allow the camera community to get larger. Note: I’ve made some edits and notes to you along the way below:
    =========
    Good to get your feedback as you focused on answering real world workflow and use case, rather than on specs and brand loyalty debates.
    I mentioned this in several of my posts and will repeat here. Sorry to be picky and specific here, but the overheating word is being misused in the YT community right now.
    See below for my detailed explanations:
    1) Longevity: Both A7S3 and R5/6 (probably goes for all camera bodies) uses sensors and components inside that are either commercial grade (-4F to 140F or -20 to 60C) or industrial grade (-40 to 122F or -40 to 85C) so they have a long ways before they melt or fail. I won’t mention military grade as these are consumer products.
    2) Heat Safety threshold: This is not equal to overheating and shutting down. It is set to shut down for consumers safety.
    “Hand hot” is a term to describe the hottest temp that one person can hand touch without pain. That is generally below 122F or 50C and range from 110-115F or 43-48C.
    And that also depends on a person’s age, gender, pain tolerance, having calloused hands, etc.
    Sony’s approach to consumer safety is to use two modes:
    1) standard for hand held shooting; and
    2) high for tripod shooting.
    The reason for this is that I’m guessing that they don’t want to get sued if it gets too hot to hand touch and then having the consumer drop and break the camera. It will not be hot enough to burn the hand but the shock or feeling of it being hot will possibly make the consumer let go of the camera.
    Therefore their default setting will always be set to standard mode for safety measures and avoiding lawsuits.
    Canon does the same with their recording limits that they issued for each recording mode. When it hits the heat safety threshold, it turns off (Edit: unless recording is external like what Gerald showed with the R6 where it records beyond it’s recording limit). But more on this below.
    3) Design to address thermal energy/dynamics:
    Both brands took a different approach.
    Sony, having been scrutinized for about 5yrs and having more experience to solve for thermal heat management, so they used a weather sealed small body but with passive heat sinks to allow heat to dissipate.
    The limitations here is that it will still hit the heat safety threshold in high ambient temps (i.e. exposed in direct sunlight) but not in room temp.
    Dan showed in first video but was in standard mode. Then in second video, he changed it to high mode and it still shut off. All he did was provide a data point that most cameras will hit that heat safety threshold at some point. He didn’t say anything about the camera being too hot to hand touch, didn’t measure the temp at shut off, or if it can continue to record or shoot stills, or if he got the same results in room temp, etc etc. hence the criticism.
    Canon on the other hand (with less experienced on solving for thermal heat management), designed the R5 with a magnesium alloy and bigger body with no passive heat sinks or active cooling fan chamber with vents. So when they set the safety threshold settings, it will also shutdown but since the body is weather sealed, heat is trapped and cannot dissipate so it will shut down in either room or ambient temps according to the limits provided by Canon in each recording mode.
    (Edit: CTO Larsson, technically, if this is true and the R5/6 does not get hot to the touch, Canon could do a firmware update that allows “high temp mode” like Sony and allows the recording limits to increase at higher temps without damaging the sensor and components inside. They are probably too conservative with their limits)
    All in all, it’s like a race car, the specs and speedometer says 240-320+kmph (or 150--200mph) but for safety for everyone driving, the law requires a speed limit of 55-65mph depending in which country you live in (my reference is for US freeways/highways).
    Anyhow sorry for the long rant on this as it seems the YT community in general is not aware of thermal heat management and what these camera manufacturers need to think about for consumer safety as well as comply to safety laws.
    Hope that in future and further testing, there will be options to allow to push the heat safety threshold and increase recording times but with “buyer’s beware or warranty voided” to that effect.
    Keep creating more content as it helps me learn more about video creation!

      One of the most insightful and valuable comments here. Thank you. What you write is very true. I've actually worked a bit with heat dissipation designs. Mobile basestations (what's at the other end of your 2g/3g/4g/5g phone) need to run 24/7 and they're full of electronic stuff inside a weather sealed enclosure.
      At least in that space, and possibly in the case of these two cameras too, there there is one more consideration beyond consumer safety and longevity and that is performance. It's harder to make an amplifier that is low noise at high temperature than to make one that is low noise at low temperatures. So if they allow the temperature to run hotter, it might not only be problems with consumer safety - because it seems the R5 is completely cold to the touch even when it switches off for overheating, or circuit damage, but it might start producing image artifacts if running any hotter. The heat may excite the sensor or amplifier into believing there was a photon there and image quality might start falling apart. I don't know if this is the case, but I'm guessing it is.
      Will be very interesting to see what Canon will do at this stage, I'm sure like you suggest, they will increase the tolerance (let it run hotter) and my guess is also that they are already working on a thermal redesign, because it seems the current version doesn't have one.
      It should be soooo easy to put a heat sink that just conducts the heat out to some sort of metal plate which you can then hook up to a bigger battery grip or something and get the heat off the camera. Let's see!

    • @nomad0714
      @nomad0714 4 роки тому

      Hi CTO LARSSON,
      Yes you are correct. Side effects of sensor noise is from heat so I am sure that is a consideration for Canon’s engineers. Just don’t know what temperature levels can be pushed without introducing image noise.
      It seems that others having the R5 are saying that the CF express cards run hot while the rest is not. If this is the case, maybe Canon can provide different lower bit rate modes so it doesn’t run hot and trigger the heat safety threshold.
      Canon is the aggressor here and went swinging for the fences with 8k raw/24/30 and 4k 60/120 HQ recording modes which are computational intensive, so let’s hope that by November, the new batches have these thermal heat management sorted out with internal heat sinks and be less conservative with the heat safety thresholds and then recording times can be extended to at least 1hr in these high recording modes.
      Always a fan of tech pushing its limits and capturing our imagination.
      Stay safe and enjoy your A7S3. I may be following you in Nov/Dec when enough reviews and real world tests are out.

    A great video. However the framing of this whole discussion of R5 vs A7SIII is, how to say it, amplified by youtube vloggers. All the press around these cameras these days are driven by vloggers, not photographers. Most people turn to youtube videos to learn about the new cameras and are confronted by a wall of criticism of features they will never use. No photographer would buy a 12mp camera in 2020. The 5 series cameras have always been the solid workhorse photography camera first, with some innovative video features thrown in. That is what Canon has done here. Could Canon have put a fan in like the Panasonic? Yes, but that would be at the expense of vents and compromise the reliability and weather sealing that photographers need this camera for. Could Canon have made a 12MP video camera? Yes, but it wouldn't be called the R5. There is simply no reason to compare these cameras to each other. I do believe that the situation with the video will improve slightly with firmware updates, but the camera already achieves way beyond what the typical photographer needs video for.

      Let me phrase the conclusion better: Up until a few weeks ago, I thought the R5 would be the promised pro video upgrade of the EOS R, released in 2018, now dated. For that reason, I had a pre-order in since spring. That's a problem - for me, not for you as a photographer.
      That's why I tried to be as clear as possible in the video and said this (approximately)
      "Because where the R5 beats the current Sony offering out of the park, is in professional photography, like large print size.
      Then most of this chart doesn't matter. What matters then is this row.
      Sharpness and Lenses. The R5 is a fantastic photography camera with its 45 MP sensor, the
      RF lens lineup which is fantastic. The wide angle flexibility. The wildlife.
      The f/1.2 lenses combined with the RF lens interface and the new autofocus, nailing stunning portraits every frame."
      I also believe I said multiple times that this comparison is for my needs for video, not photography.
