It's tough to pick between books and movies because movies have that low barrier of entry and small time commitment. Look at something like TLOTR for example. The movies are like 10 ish hours of commitment vs 60+ hours for the books. That level of convenience is hard to beat but because of the denseness of content, it's books for me all the way. Books can make me invested in a way no other medium can.
For me, i personally saw in Barbie that the theme was that if its only women or only men in charge, thats a bad thing. That you need to have space for both to have a good society.
Speaking of serial killers have you guys read Helm of Midnight? Anddddd my 2 favorite podcasts. This was awesome. Thank you guys. Both your podcasts are so much more unique then most of youtube. I think having the 2 personalities just makes it for ya'll.
In terms of musicals, coming from someone who's obsessed with musicals, Lin-Manuel Miranda's storytelling through his musicals are immaculate! In The Heights is one of my favourites!
very interesting points made. regarding barbie segment: stating your honest, authentic opinions is why ppl watch. so never self censor, these are the most interesting discussions.
I think a much better example of constraints in a movie working for the movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They couldn't afford horses and used the coconuts and it is now an iconic joke
1:16:18 A very good JRPG can get this effect as well. In particular, The Legend of Heroes: Trails series can capture basically everything you said at the length and enjoyment of a long fantasy book. I recommend watching a video on UA-cam called "How the Trails series mastered world building" by Mother's Basement. The perfect video to explain what I'm referring to. I'm only recommending this since the panel already said they aren't too familiar with the best story telling you could get in a video game, that video should suffice.
I think an important part that needs to be remembered of thing feeling like they were made better "back in the day" is survivorship bias which we are all guilty of, it's human nature to look at something that's survived a long time and say "well things must have just been made better then" forgetting the potentially millions of other ones that didn't survive, like the amount of authors that were probably considered great authors in their day that have been completely lost to time would be staggering let alone the ones that weren't every good authors.
1:49:00 the only book that I’ve ever read that gets lumped in with this sort of “trauma porn” type of book that I will praise is A Little Life. The prose of that book is absolutely beautiful, but it also shows the story of someone who hasn’t been able to get over their trauma after years of trying, which I think is a pretty realistic story to convey. I don’t think that book is unrealistic in the amount of trauma that a character has had. Sometimes one form of trauma can lead to other forms of trauma.
It’s a cop out answer, I know, but I really don’t think any one medium is better than the other. Each has strengths the other does not and excels at different things. Books are not bound by any of the real world constraints other mediums are. I.e they do not need to worry about budget, the imaginative nature means certain images work for books that wouldn’t really translate to film. You can write in an introspective way that allows the audience to get in close with the characters. Film has a visual component that totally transforms the way they are crafted and the way they are viewed. It often becomes more of an interpretation, as we need to rely on facial queues from actors or subtle camera movements. Video games have the unique element of direct interaction from the audience. When it works, this can elicit incredible results. Horror moments are more terrifying, tense moments are more edge of your seat, gut wrenching moments feel more impactful. On the whole though I don’t think gaming averages out as well as the others. The highs are just as high, but the average tends to be lower. I don’t watch many plays so I can’t really comment on them. Games and film are also collaborative efforts to create. They aren’t simply the work of a single author.
My favorite is books by far but for any specific story, the best medium for a given story is usually the one it started with - Star Wars movie is better - books are good but movie is better. Harry Potter books are better - the movies are amazing but the books are better. So while I like books better - the best medium depends on the story being told.
I didn’t like Barbie for more than the political reasons. I didn’t really think the way they edited it worked, there were so many weird pauses and scenes that took too long to get through. A lot of the jokes fell flat. The political component? Hated that too lol But I do feel as though books are the best medium because you have to work harder for it. You have to use your imagination more and that can require intense brain power.
Do we really need to find a message or answers to our problems in every piece of media we consume? We analyze the shit out of everything. Don't get me wrong, I do think that some creators are pushing an agenda, but if we are looking for answers to world problems by watching Barbie, then we are in deep trouble? Be well, stay safe.
Thanks for having us boys! Maddie is for sure going to have to publically release the rating spreadsheet now.

Crossover I didn’t know I wanted or needed and I couldn’t be happier.

Been waiting for this collab
Amazing intro 😂

I liked Name of the Wing and despite this I HAVE NOT AND WILL NOT LOST FAITH IN 2 TO RAMBLE
I'd love it if you could do a video recommending philosophy books.

Comics & Animanga shoulda been included among the mediums imo🙏

So I need help i just finished Dune Messiah and want another series that follows a complex, intelligent leader. Any help?
The Barbie movie isn’t anti men- it’s anti patriarchy
I think Rich is the most pretentious.
Also, he hates Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn
Love seeing the boys go on a double date 🎉🎉🎉
Austin’s fiancé watching this lmao
Sound of music is a weird one, because a lot of that is diagetic, is actually happening.
For me books or movies is the best but tv shows have the highest highs and lowest lows.
So, not about ghosts?
If you’re attempting to be as objective as possible, rating Howling Dark as a 4 is unrealistically low.
27:35 If she said Red Rising after that sentence I was gonna click off
