John Sykes was so good that Coverdale had to replace him with three guitarists - Vai, Vandenburg, and Vivian Campbell. And it still wasn’t enough. Sykes is one of the greats.
true..
He was robbed of his rightful fame. I'm sure he received his money, but that's not the most important thing in life, is it?
He fuck, i remember him with thin lizzy in 1983 at Reading rock. Was pretty average at the best. Brainwashed fan boys🤔😂😂. Its a wonder he can play at all with all the fan boys crawling in and out of his arse, must b bloody painful 🤣.
Meh…
@@multiversos1 Money is very important, since he hasn’t released an album or done anything music wise in 15 years that money comes in handy.
Sykes gave Whitesnake their best album. The guy is incredible. The solo in this song proves that. Once he left, that was it. His solo albums are fantastic.
He was impossible to copy. His vibrato is immense and unique
cold sweat ... in the bar
@@theonlyredspecial vibrato, is in his finger or equipment, I am not professional. I saw so many Great guitar heroes even SRV live in Austin, but I am obviously obsessed with John tight and heavy playing. One and Only!
@@MrIgorek13 all in his fingers he has such a wide and expressive vibrato. Love his playing.
@@theonlyredspecial ty much!
Whitesnake album from 1987, some of the best guitar tone on the planet.
damn right . sexy tone
helped created by none other than Bob rock.
Gibson Les Paul with Dirty Fingers pickups into a Mesa Boogie amp. Yes. THAT is the tone.
@@Hehehe-hf7rq Nice! It was Bob Rock that also created the legendary guitar tone on Crüe's Dr Feelgood. The man is a metal genius.
Album title???
John Sykes won the game of life - wrote songs that will be listened to for eternity and made enough money to walk away from the crazy lifestyle. God bless one of the best rock guitarist/songwriter in history.
I absolutely agree with that statement! The best Whitesnake guitarist they ever had and ever will do!
These two could have ruled the world together if they had worked their problems out. Unbelievable musical chemistry.
John Sykes was such a powerful influence on me as a 9 year old barely able to get my hands across the fret-board and then as a teenager with his $400 electric guitar still hungry to learn and practicing in his room. As an adult (48 year old) he continues to inspire. His tone was incredible and his command of the instrument stands alone. Lets not forget he is covering rhythm & lead guitar here. Sykes is a legend & I await his next album. Much respect to Mr Sykes.
The most under-rated axe wielder of his generation.
Agreed! Took Steve Vai & Adrian Vandenberg both at the same time to replace him.
Who
Absolutely.
@sumdyude Vai yes. Vandenberg no.
John wasn't underrated at all. Those of us who grew up with him and followed his progress, always ranked him amongst the best.
John Sykes brought life to The Tygers of Pan Tang , Thin Lizzy & Whitesnake. His playing was easily recognisable and always excellent. He also looked like what a guitar hero should look like.
Just a pity he was a bit of a knob cheese. Unfortunately it seems like most Legends are
@@jackshit3355 His lack of output is indicative of somebody who very inconsistent or annoys enough people to get stuck with himself
@@jackshit3355 - What makes you say that? I met John Sykes several times and he was about as cool and humble as you would hope.
quite right
@@CaribSurfKing1 He's released a number of 'Sykes' albums that only saw US releases. He also spent a large part of the mid - late 90s and 2000s on the road with the boys from Thin Lizzy
John Sykes WAS the WHOLE SHOW.
That's why he had to go, I guess. 😒
After whitesnake what massive hit albums and songs did he have? How many stadiums did he sell out, where is he now, apart from snake I’ve heard nothing great from him at all yet he is supposed to be great
Compare this version to all other UA-cam versions of this song, especially the Donington with Vai and Vandy. Sykes sheer passion eats all other versions for lunch. Best lineup for this band, and by far the best WS guitarist.
Well said I totally agree!!
AsThey ALL Stand meekly by!!!!!!
I only own two Whitesnake albums. The rest are unnecessary.
I realize Im kind of randomly asking but do anybody know a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Decker Fletcher Flixportal
One of the most intense and memorable moments captured live in history. Sykes was jawdropping here.
I always loved this guy !! His vibrato is fuckin crazy !! He's also a great singer !! Blue Murder is fantastic!! Faved , shared and liked !!
Roberto Crescenza Where do you think Zakk Wylde got his crazy pitch harmonic bends?? He took that straight outta Syke's playbook...
@@ChucksterOLove and of course Zakks idol Randy Rhoads.
Check out Tigers of Pan Tang to.
One of the best vibratos in the history of guitar playing!
the best guitarist of whitesnake.. and also the most aggressive picking in the history of hard rock.. genious player
Absolutely!!!
300% agreed 🎉
"While the rest of us look meekly on." David didn't hide his jealousy very well.
John Paul exactly .
Sykes is sick !!!
Because John is Godlike .
When he says, "as we look meekly on..." that means just what everyone is saying, that Sykes is "God like" on the guitar - so much that all we can do is simply look "meekly" on.
meek·ly
/ˈmēklē/
Learn to pronounce
adverb
in a quiet, gentle, and submissive manner.
"to keep the peace, she nodded meekly and smiled"
Coverdale committed probably one of the biggest injustice to rock n roll by replacing this guy. At the same time, Coverdale summed up his stint with the great John Sykes by saying, "If John (Sykes) just acted on .02 common sense, he will be alright..."
Meekly is not jealousy , it is being submissive to the power present . David acknowledges the talent of john .. It isn't necessarily jealousy here.
Can’t get any better than John Sykes
Oh my!! Johnny boy on beast mode !!! He's a guitar god....absolutely awesome, such a badass!! 😎
Coverplant out of pitch as usual...he's embarrassing damn!! 😣
David is in his own key, not a great live singer. Great in the studio.
I can kind of see why he got rid of John sykes. John could sing, write , and was an incredible guitar player. John over shadowed him live. You could sense the jealousy from David when the crowd heard John's name.
Incredible player.
It's called, 'autotune'.
Coverdale. I loved him as a singer. But you are right. Live he struggled immensely. Studio was his forte.
@@theonlyredspecial must b a different Coverdale to the 1 i remember seeing live HEADLINING monsters of rock in 1983 with meatloaf and zz top supporting, and 1n 1990 with Aerosmith supporting them. The same Coverdale who never once struggled to sing. The same Coverdale who fronted deep purple with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar in early 70s, a REAL guitar god of the highest standards, and was never overshadowed by or jealous of him. Dont know now old you are, but ur knowledge of whitesnake and David Coverdale is very limited.
@@glenturney4750 Autotune is for pop stars who suck, lol.
You can tell he's having trouble with his monitors - right about three minutes in he makes a couple of signals to indicate that
Man if coverdale's ego was smaller, they really couldve been legendary, him and Sykes
Both ego’s you mean?
@@ericnootebos5855 why did they part ways?
@@Hehehe-hf7rq i did read it was because coverdale wasn't really happy about the fact, that he shared the spotlight with sykes... but not sure about that 100%
100% agree. David said in a recent interview that he has been reaching out to everyone he has ever had a problem with to bury the hatchet, and he said so far, Sykes is the only one who hasn't replied to him. It is a total shame. Egos suck.
The master rite here
At least Sykes was in tune. David sounded like a novice.
biggest mistake coverdale ever made was firing john... his face says it all when he states "while the rest of us lokk meekly on"
Pure jealousy 🤣. You don't hold a candle to John. He's better than you, Dave, in every way possible!
It was a timing/generational thing, but John Sykes has always been my Jimi Hendrix.
Mike N ow yeah i think his way better tbh just not credited enough. For sure his top in the world.
me too
John Sykes - Master of the Fretboard! Truly Amazing Talent! 🤘😎🤟
I've seen many guitar solos...but this is absolutely the most epic solo I've ever seen. Nobody else can touch this combination of balls and technique. I watch this a couple times a year.
well said
Exactly my thought !! Listening at least once a month🤘🤘🤘
Keep in mind what Coverdale says. “This is a song featuring j.s. while we meekly look on.” Yeah Dave, that about sums it up.
Thomas Ericson hahaha yeah
@@JohnSykesFan you sir are a genius and that Album is one of the best ever thanks to you!
I believe John was a multiple threat to David..John Sykes can shredd like no other, sing, compose and very easy on the eyes. Total rockstar package!
@@REDWASP777 mmmmm if i do say so myself. so right pamela even to this day he still looks good. It's hard to believe he is 61 now. I could listen to him play guitar all day . i just love his tone and his voice to.

I was there!! I was 11 and my dad took me. Also saw Queen with Freddie the same day!!!!! Still the best show of my life!!
Awesome..great memories with dad
Maiden Queen and Whitesnake all in their prime , that would have been a great day out !
Plain and simple .. this guy is a monster on guitar , his balls out playing ,great concept of gear and guitar sound , in my opinion one of the most dynamic players in hard rock .
If you think for a second there is better then John Sykes then you are wrong this guy is just that dam good
a natural
@@drpaulmasonphd
Once again it’s Dr. Know it all... the guy ranting about Eric Sykes the English tv writer while everyone else is talking about John Sykes the guitarist. What better way to embarrass yourself by not knowing what the hell you’re talking about while trying to pretend you do!
Dr Paul Mason. JS made Whitesnake in the US. Him and Bob Rock created the sound that is legendary.
hes unreal, but there are literally dozens who are "better". he did create an amazing album with WS, yes, & his sound & solos were awesome, but come on?
The 80's should never have ended.
Best decade ever
💯 agree
The Golden Age of Guitar and Rock / Metal. It could only go one way after that.........down.
Mary, mother of Jesus, John Sykes... you absolutely melted that guitar neck and simultaneously kicked my ass all over the living room with that solo. And as great as that sounds thru my computer speakers. I can only imagine how it sounded 30 or 40 rows deep at 120 dB... Props to you, sir. Outstanding...
The most brilliant guitar solo ever! Thank you Mr. Sykes!!!!
What a night at Rock in Rio 1985 .... Whitesnake, then OZZY, Then Scorpions and closing the night ACDC. Maybe the great back to back to back to back Lineup EVER at any festival.
Here for John Sykes, biggest influence on my guitar playing.
John Sykes Great Guitar🎸👏👏👏👏
Thank God, I was there!!!! Best Whitesnake lineup!
@44seconds...meow! Oh dear...John Sykes too talented and far prettier than poor David...he'll have to go! My favourite WS album is the '87 with Sykes on point. Riffs and tone were astonishing.
I have never seen a live video or Coverdale can actually stay on pitch. Sykes carried this band
Terribly off!
Coverversion is way overrated. Sykes, Murry & Powell could have done thos without him.
DC should have stayed backstage doing rails of Rio blow and primping his hair.
You high???
He’s consistently flat. 😬
He was good during early Whitesnake years...from the Slide it In album tour on with MTV and worldwide concerts he really went downhill...he changed his singing style a lot over the years too from a deeper and thunderous voice to a higher and screaming tone...I think that was not his natural and most suitable range and it ended up totally ruining his voice...
Fantastic solo Mr Sykes ♥️🎸🎸♥️
The Great Cozy Powell !!! Double Bass Boom Kit Awesome...
the best whitesnake ever RIP Cozy
You can't take the spotlight from David like that and stay in the band for very long.
Guitar master!!!
I love how david Coverdale thinks it’s too loud and it’s only one guitarist during this performance ...the great Sykes
IKR! He couldn't handle JS's talent. So obvious. I see that DC is a catty, borderline petty musician. He sabotaged JS when he saw that once the songwriting, guitar playing and JS's looks (yes, DC petty AF) would be in the same spotlight as his very good but not great singing, he gutted JS and formed a radio friendly band with guys who couldn't/didn't overshadow him.
Sykes - so insane! That vibrato! Instantly recognizable! And how does he not break strings on every solo with those bends?!?! lol So awesome....
I always wanted to see Fil Henley/Wings Of Pegasus do a breakdown of this solo. Hasn't yet. Sykes is UK's answer to EVH.
Hahah yeah, Fil comments very fucking well what's happening on the video :D
Excellent commentary and documentary of the 1987 WHITESNAKE album. You were very objective and looked at it from all sides. Your ending with the last three minutes of quotes from John Sykes was phenomenal.
Way underrated is this lineup. They were never the same with Alridge, Vandenberg, Campbell, and even Vai lineup.
That is one hell of a fine guitar tone, to go with one hell of a solo!
He's off in the beginning but at around 3:02, David signals that he can't hear, either himself or the band. It gets a little better. John Sykes kills it. He's still one of my favorites to this day
Technique-wise (I may be wrong though), John has always been on the par with Yngwie, but despite this John has been severely overlooked by rock community, which is unfair.
John is pretty fast tbh, I think those who try to dig deeper on 1987, eventually find Sykes like I did. The guitarwork just blew me away I had to know!
0:37 you can really tell people love and adored Sykes back then
No wonder why Coverdale was quite jealous of him! 😅
Listen to that tone....listen......listen....
Sykes was so in the pocket for the ‘87 Whitesnake album and truthfully had the best sound for the band.
I love this version. The John & Cozy Show, otherwise known as Crying In The Rain :)
ahahaha...indeed!! both on beast mode ! ..while David was desperately looking for his lost tune! Poor Davie! 😂
I'll bet Zakk Wylde loves playing this when he's by himself
LOL!!
Zakk must be a Sykes fan.
Aldrich is better!
Sykes and Zakk play together on a song called "god of war"
@@rowdync lol, for sure he is not, but he is a great guitar player too
I wish there was more live footage of this lineup! John Sykes is so amazing. Always been one of my biggest influences!!
Or just john Sykes. There's not enough in my opinion. Especially with blue murder. Man J. SYKES IS A BEAST
Thats why Sykes had to go...his raw talent and compelling appearance was taking all the attention from Coverdale
He could have broken 5 guitar strings during that amazing onslaught of guitar magic!
You can't buy tone like that
You got to find it very hard!
Coverdale sacked Sykes because John was stealing the limelight!!
And Steve Vai didn't ... ??
@@evh4611 Not in the same way. Vai isn't a blues player, and has no where the intensity live, that Sykes did. (I saw Vai with WS.) He played awesome, but it was flash, and not really on par, in a rock way. (Vandenberg was mediocre). Vai excels at Vai, but on a rock stage, he can't touch Sykes in a million years.
And Coverdale claimed he wrote all the guitar parts on the 1987 album...haha..that's bullshit!! Anyone who listens to Blue Murder..and has the albums...knows it has the same guitar tones and sound..and that is all JOHN....just incredible!! 1 of my FAV guitar players ever!! And the solo in this song is killer...WOW!!!!! Cheers John!!
Yeah he might have wrote some rhythm parts for songs like Looking for Love, Is This Love, Don't Turn Away etc. but it's very obvious the bulk of the riffs are pure John.. especially shit like Children Of The Night, Bad Boys, You're Gonna Break My Heart Again.. just oozing pure Sykes goodness!
Shit's about as true as Mustaine saying he sang Marty's solos to him lmao..
@@FerusZaz i dont think he really did. If you listen to the debut Blue Murder album you'll see every single riff composed on the 1987 sounds 100% like him. Sykes has also stated that Coverdale could barely play the guitar when he joined, so nah. I dont know if he can play any other instrument but if he couldnt, then he just wrote the lyrics which are pretty shit if you ask me lmao. But he was a great singer (here... Not really lol)
@@madden7732 Oh I don't disagree that at LEAST the overwhelming majority of guitar parts on 1987 were written by Sykes. Even the main part of Is This Love is more than slightly evoked in Runaway by Blue Murder. I just mean I wouldn't be in complete disbelief if Coverdale wrote something like the chorus to Don't Turn Away or something more subtle like that.
There is also the BS that Keith Olsen brought in Dan Huff to perform a lot of the guitar parts. This solo here proves Keith was full of shit. It's about note for note the same one on the album.
You can tell John puts his balls on line with this..this is absolutely amazing stuff.!
Legendary .!
that's how real rock guitarist does it
You can clearly see at 3:00 that Coverdale is having problems hearing himself in his monitors, which is why his singing is a bit odd in the beginning.
One of the best vibratos in the history of guitar playing!
their best line up ever
I really like John's guitar play!
*Coverdale's planet sized ego couldn't take sharing the stage with someone as talented and charismatic as Sikes... Firing him and the rest of this band..., just to get a crew of "yes men" hired hands to replace them... This was when it was still a 'band', and not just Coverdale solo, but using his old band name to still sell tickets, albums, and merch...*
This was literally the best lineup of Whitesnake. John Sykes songs were better than Steve Vai's contribution to this band, in my opinion.
I'm a lifelong huge Vai nut and I couldn't agree more man!!!! Vai was way too quirky for this kind of music anyways
Steve Vai played in Whitesnake? I didn’t know…
@@rjake61 yeah, he was on the very next album after the self titled album. It was called slip of the tongue.
Who's the guy [wink] up there singing out of tune while Master Sykes lays out the ass-kicking?
Best guitar solo of all time from John Syke 🤘🤘🤘
Coverdale is off key, here
Bad ASS solo by Sykes, though
Sykes is immediately recognisable - whether it was with Tygers Of Pantang *way* back in the day, or with Thin Lizzy, or Whitesnake...
John Sykes was replaced by some seriously talented guitarists, but the one that came closest to this level of musicianship and sheer ferocity, IMO, was Doug Aldrich! And Reb Beach too, of course - yet another criminally underrated guitarist....
COZY POWELL!!!!!
FINAL SCORE: Sykes 10, Coverdale 4
The whole essence of this style here is steeped in the blues. It is Hard Rock blues not Heavy Metal and there isn't much of this style anymore it has faded away. The Lyrics could have been written by Muddy Waters excellent stuff here.
John Sykes made Whitesnake and Coverdale destroyed it.
Bull.
John Sykes is a real guitarist, Whitesnake's.
He just wiped the fucking floor with Coverdale every night...lolol...clearly FAR MORE TALENTED and BETTER looking then David.
And a better singer as well, lol.
Sykes + Cozy Powell = *Top Tier.*
Is Coverdale tone-deaf???????? holy shit, that's horrible.
He can't hear himself. That what he was saying in the beginning of the video... and he kept giving the sound guy looks to let him know his monitors were still off.
Who cares.. it’s rock..meant to be sung with heart and emotion
When you barely look at your fretboard and never hit a bad note.......
Eu estava nesta platéia!!!!!
funny Sykes could have sang lead in Whitesnake probably on par with Coverdale. Amazingly talented guitar player/singer.
Here in Brazil the press didnt talk about JS back then. So he came and stole the night - the entire festival actually
This is the Whitesnake (minus Aynsley) that we wanted to see in 1987, but never got to see :(
Some of the best recognised riffs are from Mr Sykes .........Cold Sweat , Still of the Night , Blackjack from the Tygers days and the awesome Ptolemy from Blue Murder .
Can't wait for the new album . If you are a big Tygers fan have a look for the Jess Cox interview and learn some history on Mr Sykes 🤘👍🍺🍺🍺🍺
He pretty much wrote the album solo for this song on the road. It's fascinating to hear him piece it togethter here.
Either David had poor monitors, or he always sings a little flat?
I'm sure he must have been able to hear himself. Maybe he had a cold, which can create a doppler effect between your ear and voice, also make you sound hoarse.
I've always appreciated his vocals, but this is the 1st live thing I've seen...
Sykes rocked!
Sykes and coverdale were perfect!
I only wish we could have got more co-written songs from them!!!
Sykes has used that same guitar, which is a signature model from Gibson, for many years. They were only commercially produced for 2 years, I believe. If you have one, it's rare and worth keeping. Now I don't know if they ever made any retros, but the originals are a rare bird!
Coverdale's singing is terrible, constantly flat... 🙄
i spent two days in the same hotel in spain as john many moons ago........a totally sound bloke.
huskvarsm did u meet him
Coverdale fired Sykes cause John was taking him the spot in tne band.....jealous......John is one of the greatest
John Sykes is a beast
John could sing as well as David, girls thought he was better looking,David hated all that.....
Imagen Sykes playing for Ozzy After jake e lee left the band holly shit
John Sykes is the best of all times John Rules non better
This solo. Dayummm. Missed this sound. Been a lot of years. Genius.
John Sykes took Whitesnake to the mainstream.
Seriously, Coverdale really fucked up Whitesnake letting Sykes go.
