Some young talents seem to be even more impressive than Pass. Yet, Pass feels more listenable to my ear. Am I biased? Is there something to this? Pass with Fitzgerald is one of my favorites in existence.
Who sounds more impressive nowadays in your opinion ? I am honestly interested in new jazz guitar talents, not trying to challenge you or anything. To me, I've been playing jazz guitar for 15 years only so I am still a beginner haha, but IMHO I've never been more impressed than Joe Pass for his density in chord playing. Probably by George Benson for density in single-note-soloing, maybe equally to Bireli and Pat Martino, but there are lots of these single line solo experts, while Joe Pass' style is really unique and these super dense chord changes. By "density" I mean a combination of speed and harmonic complexity .. not that speed matters but since we are talking about being impressive I believe we are talking about some technical prowess. Being just fast by repeating the same notes i would not consider impressive. Joe Pass' first Virtuoso album (which was fully recorded in 1 day only !) is out of this world I've never seen any guitarist put as many chords within such short timeframes until this day.. and since jazz chord melody is to me the most complicated thing to do, Joe Pass has always been the most impressive guitarist in my eyes ever since I first heard him !
Simply Superb....Thanks Joe
Wow, that’s beautiful!
