In this video, the first lesson of the Korean for Beginners Playlist, we introduce you to the most important Korean greetings and farewells. Learning how to say "hello" and "goodbye" is the first step in your Korean language learning after mastering the Korean Alphabet Hangeul, and we're here to guide you through it with cultural insights and practical examples.
If you are not yet familiar with Hangeul, make sure to watch our Korean Alphabet series first, where you can learn how to read and write in Hangeul: ▶️ • Learn the Korean Alpha...
In this playlist, the Korean for Beginners playlist, we will exclusiveley be using the Korean Alphabet Hangeul and no romanization, on the one hand because we need to practice Hangeul from the beginning but on the other hand because it's important for learning Korean correctly.
What You'll Learn in This Lesson:
In this lesson, we explore the most common Korean greeting, 안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo), which you can use at any time of the day-morning, afternoon, or evening. Unlike English, where greetings change based on the time, 안녕하세요 serves as a universal welcome. We'll learn the meaning behind this Korean phrase by breaking it down into its components: 안녕 (Annyeong), meaning "peace" or "well-being," and 하세요 (Haseyo), a polite form of "to do."
This combination literally asks, "Are you at peace?" or "Are you well?"
Historically, asking about someone's well-being was important due to past hardships and health concerns. Therefore, when Koreans say 안녕하세요, they are inherently asking about your well-being, making it unnecessary to ask "How are you?" separately, especially to strangers.
We also discuss the importance of politeness levels in Korean culture. 안녕하세요 is the polite form used with strangers, elders, and anyone deserving respect. For close friends of the same age or younger, the informal 안녕 (Annyeong) is appropriate. However, it's important to use 안녕 cautiously, as using it with someone older or unfamiliar can be considered rude. In the beginning, it's safer to stick with 안녕하세요 until you're more comfortable with the nuances of Korean social interactions.
In lesson number 2 we will learn Korean politeness in more detail.

When it comes to saying goodbye, Korean offers two phrases depending on the situation: 안녕히 가세요 (Annyeonghi gaseyo) and 안녕히 계세요 (Annyeonghi gyeseyo). If the other person is leaving, you say 안녕히 가세요, meaning "Go in peace." If you are the one leaving and the other person is staying, you say 안녕히 계세요, meaning "Stay in peace."
We'll provide real-life scenarios to help you understand when to use each phrase correctly. For instance, if both parties are leaving, as in parting ways on the street, both would say 안녕히 가세요.
Lastly, we cover the informal way to say goodbye using 안녕 (Annyeong), which, just like in greetings, should only be used with close friends or those younger than you.
