  • We brought in one person from each of the Southern states and asked them what they liked (and disliked) about each other. Apologies in advance to Florida.

      Broadly speaking, North Florida is Southern and South Florida is Northern. [EDIT: and some sociologists categorize South Florida as part of the Spanish Caribbean. Really.]
      To generalize a little further, Florida is the abandoned bastard child of father Texas and mother California, was raised in Alabama by New Jersey and Michigan, and impersonates Georgia whenever encountered more than 20 miles from salt water.
      Not that I'm an authority on anything, but I did grow up near Ocala.

    I had to laugh at how many of these had answers that I would have given.
    1) For least southern city I immediately thought Atlanta, but then I felt immense guilt.
    2) Least Southern state to me was Oklahoma because I view it as a Plains state with Kansas, Nebraska, Dakotas, Colorado and Montana.
    3) For the most Southern state, I just could not choose between Alabama or Mississippi. I had no choice but to split the vote.

    • @mattashworth9744
      @mattashworth9744 2 роки тому +4

      Colorado and Montana as "Plains States"...lol
      The least Southern state would easily be either Delaware or Maryland. Oklahoma definitely has some Midwestern vibes (of which about half of all Midwestern states are a part of the Great Plains) but it's still very much a Southern state.

      As somebody who is from Atlanta, I have to disagree with you on this, Atlanta is most definitely a southern state, although over the years, it's apparently gotten less and less southern, because so many goddamn Northerners, and other people seem to think that it's a good place to be all of a sudden.

    • @notashroom
      @notashroom 10 місяців тому +1

      I pretty much agree with you, as someone who has lived in GA, SC, and NC (currently), but spent 40-some years in Atlanta metro.
      Atlanta is so diverse, with a lot of international folks (which is great, you have to go a long, long way to beat the food choices there) and people from all over the US, that it has lost a good bit of its Southern flavor and you hardly meet lifelong Atlantans anymore.
      Oklahoma I was surprised it was even here. I think of it like with Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. They do have some drawl in parts, but it's more Midwest than Southern. Though I'll usually leave out Texas too, because as someone said, Houston east is pretty Southern, but there's a lot more to the state, and like the blonde said, they think of themselves as Texans first.
      For most Southern, I think Mississippi, Alabama, and rural Georgia are all as Southern as anyone could want, but Atlanta pulls Georgia down a notch in the rankings. I think having a boundary with Southern neighbors on all sides helps preserve it.

    • @coynichols3517
      @coynichols3517 8 місяців тому

      Only a small portion of the Southern Plains reaches down into Oklahoma and it’s on the far western side. Most of western Oklahoma is prairie. Prairie is a mix of trees and open land. This area I’m speaking of is big cattle ranch country in Oklahoma and there are also a lot of cotton farms in this area. It’s not the plains. The only portion of Oklahoma that you can call the plains is the panhandle and the northwest tip of Oklahoma. Even that feels more like the Southwest than the plains. About two thirds of Oklahoma is heavily wooded with tree covered hills and 5 lush mountain ranges, rivers, and a lot of lakes and water. The southeastern part of Oklahoma has swamps and alligators. Plains states don’t have alligators. Texas has way more ‘plains’ than Oklahoma and most, nor do I, consider Texas to be a plains state. In the plains you get tumbleweed. Funny thing, I never saw a tumbleweed until I moved to eastern Colorado for a couple months as a kid. I haven’t seen any since. 😂

      That said, I was always proud of being a Virginian and the role the state plays in our very beginnings. Home to so many of our Founding Fathers. And yes, it was the heart of the Confederacy.
      And the correct answer to what school we hate most in college football? We don't play them anymore, but it was WVU... bunch of couch burners ;) the Virginia Tech/UVa rivalry probably beats any out of state teams with the possible mutual exception of Miami.

When I worked there as a teacher, I was very surprised that fellow teachers, students, and parents were as southern as any other part of the south. With the constant flood of tourists, it can be difficult to locate the native Floridians. Born in Mississippi, I still rank it as the most well mannered southern state.

For instance I live in the gulf coast of Mississippi and it’s such a different vibe compared to somewhere like Vicksburg or Laurel. My accent compared to upstate is nowhere near as strong because of our high tourism (because of all of the casinos and the beach) and an air force and Seabees base nearby so it gets diluted a bit.
