many japanese artists are beginning to see just how big of a potential audience they have internationally, while still retaining what makes their work distinctly and completely japanese. while some still aren't interested, or at least not yet, the rest are slowly working in new approaches to expand their reach, and it's wonderful to watch happen.
There are several j artists with deeper voices or more unique colours. Check out aimyon, iri, hana sekitori, kayoko yoshizawa, ayano kaneko, majiko, nakamura emi, wednesday campanella ...

I've been listening to this song, and Higuchi Ai, ever since this song came out. I always thought she deserved so much more recognition as she has such a beautiful voice. To see her sing the newest season of AoT's ending, the ending song to the final season of an masterpiece class anime, of which I've been watching since 2013, it's made me so incredibly happy. I started fangirling over hearing it the first time the ending came on. I'm so happy for Higuchi.
As a musician I can say they put a lot of thoughts in this song, and it actually kindda hard to count the beats. I guess actual skill is still cool in Japan. And I found it on the suggestion of youtube.
Not to crazy about the opening: the combination of hi-hat and the chord voicings sound very harsh. Lovely melody and harmonies, especially in the chorus. Very interesting bridge before the final chorus! Love the quality of pop music in Japan!
