The Magic Heating Box is a square pressure vessel made of high grade steel and 28mm insulation. The box has a 17 litre water capacity. It acts as a natural heat exchanger by mixing hot flows to from the boiler with cooler radiator returns.

Alan fitting two pumps to the "magic box" makes it more economical to operate. Central heating water spends less time in the radiator, so heat is not wasted heating the room. Also supplied with free ear defender's for each installation. 😀😁😂

We use a similar idea in data centers for cooling, where the heat pumps are connected to a big tank right next to them, and primarily cool that tank. The row chillers then pump out of that tank and back. The idea is to create more mass so that the big heat pumps can run for a couple of minutes instead of switching on and off every 30 seconds, and the tank basically keeps the flow and return from mixing by just being tall, creating a temperature gradient. It works quite well, especially when starting out a new site, and you might be using 3 percent of installed capacity because the heat pumps are sized for 100 percent, and need to cope with cooling the generators as well if they kick on. But these are 2 meter tall tanks, with a temperature gradient of maybe 10-20 C, not quite sure it’ll work in that 30 cm high box.

I have never come across a Magic Box. But I would say you are most likely correct, with regards to it being a low loss header. It can't be an heat exchanger. There's no reason to separate the primary circuit. + you would need a fill loop, Gauge, and expansion vessel on the secondary side. Other thought was a humongous dirt separator. But its appears to be sealed unit, and there's a Omega fitted🤔

So Allan I googled magic box for gas heating and found XPRT magic box international. So it looks like it's just a coil heat exchanger that the blurb says iliminates friction in the radiator system It also says that the flow to it is set at 60 degrees so that the return will come back at 57 .5 degrees which is supposed to keep the boiler in condensate mode and so make the boiler more efficient .900 yes 900 quid well spent ,ha ha.I did find a second hand one for 475£ . Would have thought that would have made the maximum rad temp 60 degrees but they do also say it makes the whole radiator temperature more even ,not sure whether you get the two pumps as well for your 900 £ though Cheers.

Magic Box was an idea to run radiators at a lower temperature (>60 degrees) by increasing the flow rate of the main heating system with a large pump (hence the light commercial Magna pump) , so minimising the delta T across each radiator, the idea was also to keep the boiler in condensing mode for longer to save energy. But in todays World of variable temperature radiators that you can easily achieve with an Open Therm, controller or with weather compensation, the Magic Box is pretty much obsolete. The box is nothing more than just a small buffer tank. We used to use something similar to decouple a high flow heat pump from a slow flow rate domestic radiator system using a 50 litre box (heat pumps need s delta T of around 5 degrees). The thing probably uses more electricity in pump losses than it saves in gas bills. Shockingly bad install as well!!

Magic Box was originally sold in Ireland as Oxyvent.
The idea is that its high volume acts to slow the water down inside enabling air to be separated more effectively.
Having separated the air the pumps are meant to work more effectively with no cavitation.
The absence of the air bubbles also allows the water to carry more energy.
That was the sales pitch. A solicitor near me paid £2500 to have one installed with a cheap tpi thermostat.
A company in Essex selling heat pumps got involved with some super salesmen. Needless to say the installation quality was of a similar standard as this one.
Of course it is a low loss header, buffer tank, call it what you will.
All magic involves mugging you over to think something is what it is not. In that respect this box is aptly named.

The "Magic Box" seems to me like a plate heat exchanger contained within a box. This would be why you need a second pump on the outlet of the "Magic Box" to provide a flow of water on the other side of the plate heat exchanger to the rads. This is just my guess could be wrong. Don't have an explanation about the second pump though, possibly they tried to fix the no heating issue with another pump. Which is just bizzare.

I thought magic box’s where used in the unvented system
Which uses a thermodynamic panel that expands and contract a liquid gas like f gas similarly to a fridge in reverse this then transfer the heart to the hot water cylinder
I only know this cause it was on grand design
I’ve never seen one or installed one and if a client ask me to install one I’ll have to tell him that there a beer shortage which I’m require to go 🤔😅

A thermodynamic magic box was marketed some years ago, utilising some sort of external heat recovery panel!!
Basically ,the magic box and similar offerings were only meant to provide large profits with no customer gain!
Trading standards should be made aware!
No chance of ANY of these devices working!!
