- Miscellaneous - USA - Vintage Paperbacks - 2024 Collection Update - Iconic Books - Incredible SF
In today's video we take a tour of my vintage USA paperbacks. These are not the bigger runs like Ace or Ballantine books but USA publishers where I have a handful of books as part of my larger paperback collection. Iconic covers and key titles abound in their glorious American goodness! Enjoy!

Great books!
Absolutely, filled beautiful covers this lot!
'The PRIVATE LIFE of Helen of Troy' has a couple of highlights lol
I couldn't resist it, sorry 🤣
It seems like the art and blurb is the high point ." It is what it is " Love the art . Some cool Christies . Can you remember your first Christie ? Mine was " The ABC Murders ", not her best but i was hooked . The Wells are a great read . Harrison vid on the way? . Great . Some great SF authors .
Thanks Sylvan! Yes some great jackets. My first Christie, no, I can't remember, sorry🙂
Love those stiffeners and richard powers covers
Excellent 🙂
Really fantastic fun seeing these! And you know it’s not just the vintage art that makes these so sweetly evocative, but the fonts that were used really add to the historical beauty. I’m not so selective, I admit, as I love them all! ❤
I know exactly what you mean Glen, these are truly magical 🙂
What a great collection of books. It always gives me a thrill when you show a book that I've got (I think only three but whatever). Looking forward to the Harry Harrison vid, I do have a soft spot for him. Thanks Jules, Jason.
Thanks Jason. I'm still a few off having the complete Harry Harrison but I'm almost there. Glad you're playing the I've got that one game. I do that all the time watching book tube🙂
Great vintage paperbacks. I'm on a new book kick, reading independent people, like Paulie Amigo and his book You Suck. I like self help satire.
Thanks, sounds like an interesting read👍
Hi Jules. Must say you have very wide and varied taste in old books. I often think that it's a bit restricting to be a single genre collector like myself. Anyway some fascinating stuff there and a pleasure to see.
Thanks Kenny. I love SF but other genres really do interest me🙂 Hope you're well my friend.
21st Century Sub, aka 'Under Pressure' but eventually settled on 'The Dragon in the Sea'
Lol, I wonder why they kept changing it?
Great video, Jules. Actually though, Pocket bought out Permabooks but continued to publish titles as Permabooks. Some of the McBains you showed with the Pockets are actually Permabooks. Both the Playtime title you showed and the Corinth Dr. Death shared the same cover artist, Robert Bonfils.
Thanks! Always wondered what the exact connection was. I've a few more later Permabooks in my Ed McBain collection. I probably have some more Bonfils in my Nightstand books but not sure if UA-cam will flag these like they did a few years ago.
Jackie Kennedy worked as an editor at Viking Press and Doubleday after Onassis passed away. It was fun to see all these nice paperbacks. The books about the 87th Precinct is an absolute favourite and I have almost all of them.
Thanks Peter. I'm a big fan of the 87th Pricinct books myself. You can see the collection here....ua-cam.com/video/jmKvda67Nl4/v-deo.htmlsi=veWPwcpEX1rZ3NyX
@@JulesBurt Thanks for the link!
@peter2359 my pleasure 🙂
Some great artwork, Jules.
Yep, some absolutely gorgeous covers here👍
Thanks, I enjoyed this very much. Especially the book you've had since childhood. 😊
Thanks Sherri!
Great stuff! A lot of editions I’ve never seen. I’m jealous. 😊
Me too!
Thanks Bob, lovely American printings, they are terrific!
Great books Jules! I have yet to find a Chester Himes out in the shops around me here in the US. I always look though.
Sleaze books have such desirable covers but it's so hard to fork up the money for them. There is actually a very old bookstore in my town that has a bunch of them but they're all over ten dollars and when I'm there I usually pass them up for other books as the stories in them are just so bland.
That World Grabbers books was one of my favorite reads from last year. Very Twilight Zone/Outer Limits.
Cool. I know what you mean about the sleaze books. It's a genre thatcis dying. I've only ever bought them when they're dirt cheap. Chester Himes is very collectable nowadays. I got my copies twenty years ago when they were a lot cheaper🙂
Jules, Great paperback group of varied books with some key ones. Your Pocket Christies look amazing, mint! Nice books!
@garylovisi357 Thanks Gary! I got lucky with those Pocket Christie's. They are indeed lovely 🙂
These books are absolutely fantastic. If you keep up with book tube, you would know of a little reading event called Garbaugust, which is a month of reading garbage books. Most of these are what we would call garbage.
Ah yes, I have heard about that challenge. I'd becread Garaugust all year round 🙂
I just posted a video about a comic about the gunfight at the OK corral and what I noticed is that Wyatt Earp doesn’t have his characteristic mustachios.I notice that Burt Lancaster also doesn’t have a mustache. I was wondering if that had something to do with recognising the good guys from the bad guys. The good guys were mostly clean shaven back in the 1950s and 1960s. What do you think?
That could well be the case, don't think I've ever thought about it!
