  • First of all, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families impacted by this disaster. It is known that many are still suffering from it.
This video documentary is a reconstitution of what JQuake software would have looked like if it was working during the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11th 2011.
Efforts have been made to respect the timestamps of datas, among which we can find :
The JMA intensity (Shindo) measured at stations from the NIED network (Numbers on the map)
The expected intensity given by the Earthquake Early Warning reports (Colored areas on the map)
The JMA earthquake information list of felt earthquakes at that time (On the right side)
The first report of tsunami warning materialized by blinking lines.
The datas used come from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience of Japan (NIED) and the Japan Meteorological Agency.
There are a few points to know while watching this video :
The Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) is taken on a 1 min sliding window instead of 1 sec, such as in the Kyoshin Monitor data used by JQuake
The Earthquake / Tsunami estimations are issued by the system which was running at the time of the earthquake, the JMA magnitude was especially underestimated at M7.9 in the first hour of the disaster. The official moment magnitude is M9.1, revised in 2016. Hopefully, the system has been greatly enhanced from this experience, by the introduction of new methods of magnitude, intensity and tsunami estimations, but also a revised communication of information to the public.
The hypocenter is only the starting point of a megathrust rupture which lasted around 3 min and holds into a rectangle of roughly 500 x 200 km. To better understand the mechanism behind it, watching the following video is strongly recommended : • March 11, 2011 Japan E...
The user point was placed at Kurihara City, where Shindo 7 was measured.
The version of JQuake used in this document is the 1.7.0 developper version.

I was at Tokyo, 31st floor on seismic-insulated hirise. Anything on wheels just flew around across the big room that I was in. I couldn't stay still even though I was crawling on the floor. It was literally a jolting ground. AND I WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE EPICENTER. I've lost word when I found it out on TV. Although I was born and have lived in Japan to experience countless quakes, this day I will never forget.

I was born and raised in Japan, but at that time I seriously felt that Japan was sinking into the sea and the country would end. It was such a strong and long shaking. But it did not end there. Considering that in terms of total area, Japan is around the same size as California, as well as the fact that Honshu, the largest of the main islands, is slightly larger than Great Britain, to see almost half the island light up and begin experiencing tremors in the span of just a few seconds really puts into perspective just how incredibly powerful this earthquake was.

However, it had a profound effect on the whole country here for months afterwards. One of the most interesting things I noticed in the aftermath was that for days, there were no commercials promoting consumer goods on TV. Just a lot of social messages. Nobody wanted to be seen profiting off of TV news broadcasts of the tragedy.

The worst part about this: a similar earthquake is going to hit Cascadia (west coast USA) and Americans are far less prepared for earthquakes than the Japanese. Even if the US adopted a J-Alert or JQuake system, the overwhelming majority of buildings near the coast is still going to crumble and the tsunami will be disastrous for those unable to escape.

I will teach the number on the upper left to those who do not understand the meaning of this. The number on the upper left is what is called "Shindo" in Japanese, and is a value that indicates the magnitude of the shaking of the earthquake. (It has nothing to do with the magnitude that indicates the magnitude of the earthquake.) This number consists of 10 levels: 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5- → 5+ → 6- → 6 + → 7. In the Great East Japan Earthquake, the number 7 was displayed. This is explained by the Japan Meteorological Agency, "You can't stand and you can't move unless you're holding onto something. You're swayed, you can't move, and you can be blown away." It means that it was such a strong earthquake. And it was 5- in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 5- "Most people are frightened and try to be safe.
    Walking problems begin to appear.
Many of the suspended objects, including the main body of the lamp hung from the ceiling, shake greatly, and the furniture begins to make noise.
Books with a high center of gravity fall from the bookshelf. "And so on. Tokyo is about 300 km away from the area where 7 was observed. However, the fact that there was such a large amount of shaking means that it was a tremendous amount of energy. If such an earthquake occurs on the seabed, a huge tsunami will occur. I am reminded of the fear of natural disasters ...

The first news about this disaster came to me in 3 PM GMT+7 . A short news program from VTC 14 showed a massive black water tsunami smashed into a Japanese local port. That scene will stay forever in my mind. And the national news program on VTV1 at 7PM opened with a huge tittle "Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan: At least 1000 died".

An earthquake has always 1 epicenter (vertical projection of the hypocenter which is the starting point of the fault rupture)
You might be in fact referring to "asperities" or "high slip rate area" which are not representable by points.
I'm sorry but the answer is no since it would require to do some animation stuff to represent these areas, nevertheless, I recommend you this awesome video to understand what I meant:
