Joan is a gift that God has given to mankind. Yet I'm unsure if mankind really deserved that.

Beyonce. Madonna , Taylor Swift, they are but cheap echoes of a time long past. This song by Ms. Baez in an informal setting far surpasses any Super Bowl Halftime show they could ever possibly do Her gentle strumming, her astounding voice, transports me into a heaven I never thought I could know.
It's beautiful but you don't need to put other women down to lift one. It cheapens your praise.

Obviously the half time show is going to have to be spectacular and appealing to the biggest audience but that doesn't automatically make it mindless or uninteresting. In fact some of the newer artists embrace showmanship for the event better than some older acts. Some acts can't adjust to the environment.

Back in the 60s and 70s I thought Joan Baez was close to being a goddess because of her unique,powerful voice, her beauty and her natural,easy charm. Most of my contemporaries agreed.She’s still alive today in her gorgeous, passionate music.
No comment that I can add would do justice to the beauty and soulfulness of Joan Baez's music. Her music takes me back to a time when there was so much more hope in the world than we find today.
She could sing the phone book and folk would still be mesmerised

The mournful sadness of this song has haunted me for nearly a half century. When Suzanne left me I was haunted by these lyrics, which all seemed to describe her & the emptiness of her memory which was all I had left of our time together. I thought I had to have her back or I could never be happy again, which I learned wasn't true with the passage of time. After several years I met another and then another and eventually fell in love and married. But even though I have felt happiness for much of my life this mournful tune still to this moment takes me back to that moment Suzanne left so long ago, and I am reminded of what it is like to lose myself completely in another person. Suzanne died at least five years ago, and I received an e mail announcement of a celebration of here life. I could not bring myself to attend. I regret that. No need to tell me how powerfui words & a tune can be. I wish you all the happiness I have felt in my life. I think it only becomes known to a person who also experiences profound sadness. M

I've been a Leonard fan since I was 12, I'm 65. I've watched and listened to his interviews and he liked other artists covering his music. Joan Baez is from the same time and same projection, stories in the form of song. A beautiful cover. I grew up in a great time for music.
Joan, in common with Judy Collins, has a tallent for making other people's songs her own.
Seen her in concert twice. She is so cute. Have loved her music and activism for years.
Her deliverance and singing on this song is heavenly.

@@rickswift4268 I agree sincerely as I remember having the live album From Every Stage in the early 80's and my other friends couldn't work out why I listened to it all the time (we were only teenagers at the time)but she is pure genius.
I agree with BurnHep7, I grew up in the small town with Joanie...there were a pack of us girls who loved her music and sometimes she would call up one of us and sing to us on the phone...also, she always sang at the local diner when not on tour and kept the whole town enthralled...even flocks of birds would stop flying around and stop in! Although she was incredibly good looking..she was quite modest too....there is no one like her...still.

I've loved Joan Baez's voice since I was in the Navvy at 18 and later as a prison guard. I still love her voice as a shut in of 69. She generates unending love and respect.

At 4:33 one can see Joan Baez embossed on the neck of the Martin guitar. I saw Joan in Portland, Maine in June, 2013. She told the BEST story about one her original guitars and what was found when an Anniversary model was being released. What was written on the neck of the inside of her guitar from a prior repair...priceless!! Only Joan Baez and Judy Collins can perform Cohen's classic while mesmerizing their audiences when performing this cover. Joan Baez-you are brilliant and a treasure.

I am Brazilian and went to Brussels last May only to see her, a dream that came true 42 years after I heard her for the first time on a k7 tape. I didn't even know if she was young or old, or how she would look like. But I was 18 and fell in love with her. And not only for her voice and her music, but I recognized immediately, with no doubt, a real gem, a rare human being, even though at that time I did not kown anything about her. Since then my admiration, respect, and love for this boddhisattva named Joan Baez become stronger and deeper. She helps me, with her example, to wake up every morning with the self commitment to try to be a better human being, and try to keep faith in humanity. God bless Joan Baez forever.
